As a lifelong railroader I can't count the number of times I've seen this happen....have fun, take photos, just look over your shoulder and stay clear of the track foul line please!
+Aaron Peavler/Geomodelrailroader Railroad Photography the width of the train is dangerous, a simple stroke of the plow tip can get you stitches... (top left or right corner if it, depends on wich side u on)
This is the textbook definition of a "foamer". Someone who will do everything and anything to get a photo of a train even if it means getting hit by one.
***** yup foamers are not railfans "A Railfan is somone who fallows trains and models them and obeys the laws of the railroads" foamers give us a bad name so do web trolls "A Web Troll is a liar they say they are railfans but they are not" web trolls go on discussion boards and lie about their railfan activities most also spread rumors about train crews which are not true. most railroads have folded because of these guys and they give us railfans a bad name.
My personal textbook foamer is the person who was dumb enough to get falcon-punched by the 844-tragic as that was. When these folks come out to see the steam engines they’re often incredibly aggressive and ruin the experience for people around them.
I love the fact that some people are still passionate about the old steam locomotives. But being mesmerized and forgetting where you are, is just plain irresponsible.
Yep he lives to be stupid another day! As a Railroader I see these idiots continually , I have nothing against railfans because I get it it's a hobby they enjoy it, it's the ones that wet down there leg and make sure everybody knows how smart they are and know everything, absolutely love it when I'm working and they come up and tell me what we're doing wrong LOL
what a idiots they were completely unaware of the trains the red flags were people screaming idots get off the tracks! or your going to get killed that kid was such a moron.
People like this are NOT usually genuine rail photographers who know how to behave around moving trains. They're the Mums, Dads & kids who go "to see the steam train" and I'd say there's quite a few of them in that shot (e.g. Mum waving to the train). The kid who almost gets hit is only filming with a phone and what sort of shot does he get when the intermodal moves right in front of him but he keeps on shooting. Whenever you get the general public around moving trains there will be idiots like this but unfortunately as others have said they give all railfans a bad name. What is amazing is his lack of reaction to almost getting injured - which only indicates that he has absolutely NO idea of how dangerous a train is or how much it overhangs the track.
Cliff Leigh "...unfortunately as others have said they give all railfans a bad name. " What about those who perpetuate the idea "Oh, those people are railfan were involved, therefore they all must be careless," or similar stereotypes, do they get a free pass? This is the problem with the idea of "X spoiling it for Y," it ignores that those perpetuating the frustration towards a general group, as opposed to the ones in the group actually causing problems, are the ones helping to fuel the falsehood - in this case, that all, or even a significant percentage, of true rail fans are careless.
and this is why railfans and the Railroad Bulls hate foamers. If we see someone do this we railfans kick them out of the group if the video goes live. Train crews and the Bulls just kill them. I have seen too many videos where a foamer gets hit those that don't get ran over end up getting a citation but most of them wind up dead with 30 cal ammo inside them. Railroad Police shoot first and ask questions later their orders are the same as when Al Penkerton gave them to them. Arrest or Kill All Trespassers! If a railroad agent finds anyone trespassing on their property they will shoot them dead it is their job to do that.
Saved them from getting their spine crushed and being in a wheelchair for the rest of their lives, possibly even killed if the impact caused them to be pulled under the train or impaled by a part of the locomotive or a fatal blow to the head. No acknowledgement or even a simple thank you for saving them and then went back to not paying attention.
My friend is an Amtrak engineer and killed a little girl this way. She was sitting on the track on her bike watching a passing freight, he was coming the other way, on the horn, but she just thought it was the freight and didn't look around until it was to late. STAY OFF THE TRACKS.
Sad story for sure but this person clearly is not a small child, just an idiot. You would think even if you weren't paying attention, simply the massive weight of the oncoming train shaking the ground would at least cause you to turn around and look.
I always wonder why people drive onto tracks when a train is about to come. This is no different. But this time I can actually see the persons face to get a glimpse of what they might be thinking. Absolutely nothing. They see nothing. They feel nothing. They perhaps don't care to live or die. Nothing means anything to them. Not even being tapped on the shoulder, yelled at, or physically moved. I don't understand it. But some people are just destined to die by train. They just don't care. Maybe there is just no explaining it and it's that simple, no more complicated than that. They literally just don't care if they die.
Sorry I'm late to the party. The only thing I can't believe is that as the guy picked him up, and afterwards... he just kept taking video. That is what confuses the hell out of me, because if something like that happened to me, I'd be balling my eyes out crying because my life could have ended in a flash, because I'm HUMAN. You know... some steel in the spine might've taught that little brat a lesson.
Blue Comet Productions I know right. People just don’t care now a days. It’s especially disappointing because, like you said, after the man picked her up, she just kept recording. First off, WHAT KIND OF STUPID DUMBASS WOULD DO THAT!!? If that was me, I would be praising the man for saving my life, because I (like any other human being) care about my life. Here, it just seems like he doesn’t care that his life was spared. That’s what really ticks me off! It’s that ungratefulness that the man showed in that video. And another thing, HOW COULD HE NOT HERE THAT HORN BEHIND HIM!!! He didn’t even bother to look back and when he did, he just stood there. Common sense would tell him to “Get your ass out of the way”, but no, he just stood there like any idiot would do. He deserves to be called an “idiot”.
All of these comments I agree with. It's idiots like that person that are the ones that ruin a good railfanning experience and give all the rest of us a bad rep with the railroad and their employees. That's probably why a lot of rail lines in Britain have fences on either side, so as to prevent something like this from happening.
+Phillip Mulligan agreed. they thought they were getting a horn/whistle show and not realizing they were warning them of that intermodal. they even had to try using 4014's whistle for a warning
Never thought of the kid being deaf, which I suppose is a possibility, and would explain his actions. Still he could have been hit, none of this would have happened if he wasn't standing that close to the tracks. I know that you can get kind of "zoned out" focusing on the train you're recording, but you should always make a few quick glances around as you're filming to make sure nothing else is coming.
Trains are very heavy and a locomotive throttling up that close to you would have been felt, deaf or not. If you're deaf, then you should be more on the lookout anyway. Its not like you have to stand that far from the tracks to not be hit anyway. 10 ft farther away and no incident and still plenty close enough to get a great shot, even 100 ft away is close enough.
Greg Rowe I am a railfan and an up and coming presenter for Idaho Operation Lifesaver which is conducted by my friend and classmate Forrest Lampe. we don't like it when railfans are standing on the tracks or idiots playing on them. railfan rules state you must be 150 feet from the rails at time of filming 10 feet is trespassing and 2 feet can kill you.
Exactly and being to close to the tracks is what one woman to get hit and killed by the up844 as it was returning to Cheyenne.she was trying to take pictures and didn’t realize how close she was
If it were me I probably wouldn't have been as gentle. Maybe "accidentally" knocking the phone down in the process. Ooops, sorry. At least you're alive.
One rule no matter where you are next to tracks: DO NOT STAND TOO CLOSE! If you have been around any kinds of trains, you should know that trains can come by anytime - and without you being aware of it, especially in this situation where the two guys were transfixed on 4014 and the horn accompanying it. Probably did not realize that another train could come behind them and be just as loud... Glad nobody got hit, but sad to see the one guy just continuing to film as if nothing happened... THINK!
Jeez I have shared that experience of almost getting hit by a train except I did not have someone pick me up I actually had common sense to turn around toward danger
I was taught to keep my head on a swivel and out of my rear end. Situational Awareness! Too many kids keep their noses in their video games and ear buds in their ears, and they put themselves in a self-imposed solitary confinement. They never wise up. If that guy in the black coat hadn't intervened, we would have had two Darwin Award winners.
Wow. I can't believe that they almost got hit. To busy getting pics. Funny how the one guy had to pull him out of the way. How could that not hear that horn? A sd70ace K5LLA has one of the loudess horns on a train I think
Alex Moon K5LA is king of train horns. But whatever the train horn, they are ALL meant to be loud, and to be heard. I'm no expert at horns either, but right next to any train, its just dayum, louder than headphones at full blast in your ears, and those hurt when turned up by accident.
This is the same train that I got footage of when I shot the arrive of big boy. It was hauling ass when i saw it! I am surprised it was going to slow at this point. wow
Andy I recently got my ears blown out standing next to a new SD70AH's K5LLA at a railroad days event. My friends are so dumb, but it was all funny. I took a video walking around the hood of it, and they started honking while I was outside, next to the flag and all. And yea, it feels like it vibrates you inside, its that cool. :P
As a retired NS employee, I was amazed at the antics of railfans, especially around the steam trains. They seemed to go stark ravin' mad around 'em. Once when SOU 4501 was in Charlotte (NC) Yard, the super had to shut down the yard to shoo people out because they were trespassing in there, stepping in front of trains, even swiping anything they could get their hands on. They seem to treat railroads as a "game", a "toy" there for their amusement alone! We used to mock them, making high fun of their striped overalls, red bandanas and wannabe pocket watches. Called 'em "The National Railway 'HYSTERICAL' Society!~ Some real wierdos out there. But the sad part is, when we were aboard engines and someone raced us to a crossing..........and LOST! That HURTS! The most helpless feeling when a car disappears under the nose of your engine!
The sad part is, if someone gets hurt on railroad property, the railroad is liable and if sued, would most likely lose. In this case, people were allowed by security to enter the yard to watch 4014 pass by. The court would say that they didn't do enough to keep people off the tracks and were negligent if someone gets hit by a passing train. No fences, no signs, not enough security to shoo people away. Gone are the days when you took responsibility for your own actions, its someone else's fault now.
Greg Rowe And that kinda burns me up in this "ME, ME, ME society that is taught that it is always somebody else' fault when something happens, And, yes, it is often the railroad that PAYS *UNJUSTLY*, btw, for the reckless actions of the public! Right is right and WRONG is *still* WRONG, and stupid people ought not get one thin DIME for their stupid, careless actions both around and away from a railroad! Like when people bust thru crossing gates and get hit. Why, you'd think the train jumped off the tracks and chased them down to run them over to hear THEM tell it!!! :( GRRRRRRRRRRRR!
People want something for nothing. They target huge companies because they know they have deep pockets and many times would rather quietly settle in private instead of being publicly slandered in court even if they know they will win. People die in a car crash and want to blame the car(see Paul Walker) even though they were driving recklessly and well beyond the speed limit. James Dean died in a similar fashion in a Porche because he was driving recklessly on public roads. Did his family sue Porche? No, you didn't do that back then. He chose to drive too fast on a public road and crashed. It was his fault.
My dad was an engineer on the NYC, Hudsons. One day he was heading north and had just passed Poughkeepsie and a guy was standing by a signal. He saw the train, just stood there, when he was about 60' from the train he just stepped right onto the tracks. My dad said he caught a glimpse of him thrown out along the side and he had to stop. He didn't get out of the cab neither did the fireman. The fireman said, "Ya ever see this happen?" My dad said, "Nope." The Fireman said, "I have, trust me you don't want to ever see it."
If this happened when 4014 was dead-in-tow, how bad will things be when it's operational. I can't wait for it, but if I was going to see it, I'd be more careful
I'm just loving the thought of this kid watching this video for the first time, and upon realisation of his idiocy his head will bow, his joy of getting his precious photos has been snatched and that's when he knows his sense of surroundings has lost and that public humiliation via social media has won.
And that person STILL kept on FILMING?? What a STUPID person!! Probably very young -- much too young to get it about death. That person should have been reported to the UP police, and, if a minor, his/her parents contacted, and appropriate consequences imposed.. Thanks to whoever it was that yanked that dumb-cluck off the tracks!!
Should have the camera/phone taken away and have to pay a huge fine to get it back. Punishment is used for a reason, it corrects bad behavior. If the family complains, then UP could simply say he kid was trespassing and the fine could be a lot higher.
I'm going to say it since nobody else will...the person who continued to film after being saved from being turned into a pancake should have had the phone camera slapped out of his/her hands, maybe that would have gotten their attention.
Greg Rowe That would probably be theft. If the person is a problem, get them away, or have the police involved, but a policy inviting theft is just asking for more tension IMO.
He's an example of what can and often does happen while railfanning. While watching one train. Another can sneak up on you outta no where Btw he probably couldn't hear you yelling at him over the sound of the horn thos K5LLAs are extremely loud
That guy must’ve been in a trance or something. To be completely unaware of a loud K5LLA indicating an approaching train and then keep filming like nothing ever happened when that other guy made a spilt second decision to prevent him from getting run over
The non-moving idiot looked like a 1/1 scale Preiser figure there for a while. In fact, Preiser should release a sculpt of this exact person in every model railroad scale, simply calling this figure, "The Idiot".
My question is, how on earth could they either: A. Hear the sounds of a massive horn being sounded right behind them and NOT think that maybe they should get out of the way? Or B. Just straight up not hear the sounds of a massive horn being sounded right behind them? Like seriously, I get it, you don't get to see such a magnificent locomotive like the Union Pacific Big Boy 4014, but honestly people, if you're on railroad tracks, always be aware of your surroundings as if you're on the tracks or on the wood planks holding the rails up, you're in the path of any trains that could be coming down the tracks
that person who was standing next to the tracks was Horsey Girl I seen her videos she and Eric R are known to get videos even it it means getting very close the other one who does this type of stuff is Skip he is known to hold up traffic to get pacing shots.
Well we have them in the Netherlands to. This bothers me, they claim to be railfans, yet they dont understand that a mistake with a train can only be made once. Then i did'nt mention what going through the drivers mind. I know from dutch train drivers that it is not funny. I think this is not different with American train drivers.
Folks I operate a bus for the NY CITY TRANSIT authority. People hang their toes off the curb as I pull up blasting my horn. I blast my horn and people are so used to hearing horns they don't react, It's crazy.
How could that person not hear that Union Pacific freight train (I don't know the exact detail about the locos as I'm British) come towards him? One possible factor of this near miss could be that he had the hood up on his coat over his head which would limit the amount of noise he will hear (e.g. the horn of the approaching UP 8682). This is why I believe people should have to have their hood of their coat not around their head when around the railway (or railroad). Another factor which lead to this near miss is that the person was standing right next to the tracks of the approaching loco (which itself is absolutely fucking ridiculous!) Who would stand on the track just to get a shot of a special move? Its is simply idiotic! Finally, another factor was that the kid (or person) appeared just to be concentrating on the UP 4014 'Big Boy' move taking photos (or filming it) and is not aware of his surroundings and cannot see his surroundings easily (due to the hood of his coat) so he cannot see anyone or anything to the left, right or behind him which is a safety risk as it increases the chance of injury. If that man wasn't there to place him into safety that person will possibly be injured severely or killed turning a great event into a crime scene.
Many have speculated that he/she was deaf or perhaps mentally handicapped. If you're deaf, then always look. Even being deaf, a locomotive throttling up makes the ground shake and this can be felt. If he/she was mentally handicapped, where was the adult who was supposed to insure he/she's safety.
some people whine ad complain how noisy the train horn is . the train horn is not there to amuse u. it is for reasons like this .i am glad that the other fellow had common sense to pick up the person who was so engrosed in his shot and not paying attention to his own saftey.
Once again, if you're deaf, pay more attention to your surroundings. Know that if you're too close on the tracks that if a train approaches, you're going to get hit.
Would it have killed the UP to hold the intermodal for five minutes until the steam foaming had subsided? You run an attractive nuisance that brings people on the property, then expose them to further risk unnecessarily. If they had hit that kid, regardless of his stupidity, they would've been liable.
UP allowed these people to be on their property to watch 4014 being towed along its mainline. If someone gets hurt or killed even if they're stupid and its their fault, UP would have been sued and most likely would have lost. Just as if you own property and someone gets hurt on it, they can sue you and win even if you had nothing to do with it, because you own the property you're responsible.
I think its funny how the big boy is as long as both of the diesels put together. As for the person that almost got hit, common sense goes a long way. 😒
Ed Dickens is telling you in whistle code that you need to get out of the way 6 toots is the emergency signal you hear a Locomotive blowing his horn 6 times you get out of the way they heard the horn they didn't listen.
