I am 53 years old and consider myself to be a high earner. My job provides me the option to contribute the employer contributions to my Roth 401k. Should I do that or should I continue to direct that to my Traditional 401k ahead of retirement?

As a high income earner can you easily afford to contribute max of $22,500 to your traditional 401(k) and towards retirement? What is your Federal Tax Bracket and percentage of company match? I f you don't know all this then its best you consult with an advisor.

The most important thing that should be on everyone's mind currently should be to invest in different sources of income that doesn't depend on the government. Especially with the current economic crisis around the word. This is still a good time to invest in various stocks, Gold, silver and digital currencies.

Becoming a millionaire through a Roth IRA or a 401(k) involves different strategies for maximizing profits. A Roth IRA offers tax-free withdrawals in retirement, which can be advantageous if you expect to be in a higher tax bracket later in life. On the other hand, a 401(k) provides tax-deferred growth and potential employer contributions, boosting your savings. The optimal choice depends on factors like your current and future tax situation, employer match, and investment options. Consulting a financial advisor can help tailor a strategy that aligns with your financial goals and circumstances.

Prioritizing effective personal finance management holds greater significance than the sheer amount saved, irrespective of income source. Consulting a certified financial advisor can offer tailored strategies to optimize financial results by reducing expenses and enhancing income, regardless of whether it's earned through employment or investments.

I wholeheartedly concur. At 60 years old and newly retired, my external retirement funds total around One million two hundred fifty thousand dollars.. With no debt and minimal retirement fund allocation relative to my portfolio's value over the last three years, I recognize the importance of a financial advisor. Neglecting them isn't an option; however, thorough research is vital to find a trustworthy fiduciary advisor.

Individual workers can contribute up to $20,500 to their 401(k) retirement accounts in 2022, up from $19,500 in 2021 and 2020. The higher contribution limit also applies to other retirement accounts, including 403(b) plans, most 457 plans and the federal Thrift Savings Plan. Catch-up contributions to retirement accounts for those age 50 and up will remain unchanged at $6,500. Including their regular contributions, people 50 and up will be able to stash up to $27,000. The contribution limit for individual retirement accounts will also stay the same at $6,000. That limit has not increased since 2019. Individuals over 50 can stash an extra $1,000 in IRAs. That amount is also unchanged.

They focused a lot on the what and how, but not the why of squirrelling away money in these roth 401k or roth IRA. The why is you can invest that money in the stock market (either conservative ETFs, stable dividend stocks, or aggressive blue chip stocks) and the gains (hopefully, do your research) are tax free. So if you live to the ripe age of 60, you will be rewarded with your hard earned savings and their compound interest. Roth is a true gift from the government that most don't know about.

what do you think about using mutual funds within my 401k to purchase other shares i hold.. I have 10 mutual funds in my account, i diversified 100% into my large cap fund that i convert to other shares within my portfolio instead of going 5-10% per each mutual fund every paycheck i’m able to get 5-10 shares per trade. what do you think of the idea to boost my portfolio faster?
@GrandpasPlace
@GrandpasPlace 2 года назад
So, theoretically speaking if my (s-corp) business has a net profit of $200,000 a year the wife and I (both over 50) can take a paycheck where we distribute it as follows. Traditional IRA $7000 per year each ($14,000 total pre-tax) 401K Each with matching $26000 contribution, $38000 match ($134,000 total pre-tax) HSA $7200 per year provided the health plan is a family plan. (Can the you and the wife have separate health plans and HSA's with the company?) So, each could have a pay of around $41,000 a year and get it all sucked up in pre-tax contributions while investing a combined total of over $155,200 per year and take the remaining $44,800 as a distribution at the lower tax rate? Before someone chimes in on Roth IRA's, while they are good for most, I have lots of investments (8 figures) at the moment and the intent is to use the pre-tax accounts as tax write offs by taking the distributions and using them as donations to charities. So No taxes going in, and a tax write off coming out. I think Im starting to understand how politicians file their taxes.
@jaquevius
@jaquevius 2 года назад
Lot of questions you have. I’ll try to address them, as I also have an S-Corp, and my wife and I max the 401k 26k + match and IRA 14k (but we use the back door Roth because we have a 7 figure not 8 figure equity investment portfolio lol, well done btw) -you can’t write off the 14 k traditional IRA since you max your 401k, so if you’re going to invest that then you might as well do the Roth conversion, otherwise no tax advantage. In fact, it’s a disadvantage because you’ll pay ordinary income when you pull it out of a traditional. Better not to even put it in an IRA if you’re not going to convert it. Just put it in a post tax account -401k max is 26k each, but it must be paid via W2 income and the company match is a percentage of the W2 income and will be listed in your 401k plan. Have you set up your 401k plan yet. If not I can tell you how to do this. It’s extremely easy. Don’t use a broker unless you want to waste a lot of money in fees and commissions for no value in return -I don’t have an HSA but I believe it to be $7200 per yr per family. I’m considering this for long term care / end of life costs. -No. It’s impossible to invest more pretax than you receive in income from your S-Corp. That would be amazing though. Your best tax strategy via the S-Corp is to deduct all personal expenses that could have a business related expense (use your business credit card a lot, mileage your cars vs your company purchasing the cars, computers, phones, etc), depreciating the business assets, paying yourself the minimum W2 to max the 401k thus minimizing FICA + SS + Medicare, and then paying yourself what’s left over in distributions. Unfortunately he distributions are still taxed as ordinary income not capital gains so you’re still going to pay ~37% + state rather than 20%. No way around it unfortunately. Common misconception that the rich or wealthy don’t pay taxes. Perhaps a minuscule percentage that inherited the money that has already been taxed and they only have to pay capital gains, but this is extraordinarily uncommon. Look at the stats. The top 5% of tax payers pay 50% of all of the taxes in the US. Perception vs reality.

A few things I learned about "maxing" my 401K over the years: 1. In many if not most plans that match, the formula is 50% of employee contribution up to 6% of income. 2. If you are fortunate enough to max out your SS deduction before the end of the calendar year, some employers will contribute the 6.2% payroll deduction to your tax deferred 401K, up to the 401K max... you want to know this BEFORE you specify your contribution level. 3. IF you "separate" from an employer in the year you turn 55 thru age 59 1/2, you are exempt from paying the 10% early withdrawal penalty from the 401K of that employer... Worthwhile insurance if you aren't prepared to be unemployed at that stage of life. That exemption does NOT apply to funds rolled over.

According to The Nest, a 401k can't be touched as long as you are working for the employer that sponsored the 401k, no matter how old you are. Once you put your money in there, it is _LOCKED_ until you stop working for that employer.

@@dienekes4364 YES you can roll your regular 401(k) into a rollover IRA. I just helped my husband transfer his regular 401K & Roth 401(k) into our FIDELITY IRA & Roth accounts. All we did was to call the firm’s investment company and told them what we intended to do. We were told to provide our fidelity account numbers. That’s it. It took only 3 business days for the funds to be transferred into our accounts.

There are contribution limits to an IRA (not "income" as I had before) without doing a rollover. Or really it is that if you contribute the maximum to a 401(k), then you can't add any more money to a IRA. So if you put the 67.5K (if you're over 50 in 2022) then I am pretty sure you can't add to an IRA. My situation is that I've been contributing the max since the beginning (the equivalent of the 67.5K in 2022 as I'll be 50 in 2022) since I get generous matching up to the salary limit. So there's never been an opportunity to do a Roth. I don't think it makes sense for me anyway at least now since I don't plan to retire but there's no IRA to contribute to. If there is a way I can contribute the 6K after the 67.5K I'd like to know...
@adamrichardson6918
@adamrichardson6918 2 года назад
That is incorrect. You can roll/convert as much as you want into a IRA/Roth, as much as you want.
@adamrichardson6918
@adamrichardson6918 2 года назад
Also there are no income limits to putting $6k in your IRA, you just don't get a tax savings. You can put $6k into an IRA and roll it into a Roth no matter your income. You can also put your after tax 401k contributions into the Roth each year as well. no limit on the conversion, the limit comes from the 61k limit on your 401k (2022).
@RamSamudrala
@RamSamudrala 2 года назад
@@adamrichardson6918 Yes, that's what I meant, that the 2022 $61K contribution limit ($67.5K if you're over 50) prevents you from putting the $6K even if it is after-tax. I just want to make sure the advice I was given is right.
@adamrichardson6918
@adamrichardson6918 2 года назад
@@RamSamudrala it doesn't prevent you from putting $6k in your ira. rolling and converting from 401ks or 403s or pensions does not effect your contribution limit.
