Hey Everyone!
This is the process I work through as I plan and calculate my groceries, I'm sure there's more that goes on in my head and I'm sure I probably could have made this fancier with bullet points and stuff lol, but 'it is what it is' lol :D

We live in rural WA so we bulk buy what we can and our last costco trip we spent about $800, only on things we use and need, and when we did a price comparison with Coles, we saved almost $500 compared to what we would have if we had just gotten those things in our fortnightly shop and those items will last 6 of us roughly 5-6 months. I definitely think that if you take the time to play the game, you can absolutely save big with costco. And i have zero risk of running out of flour 😂😭

Wow I’m exhausted just listening to how you shop and plan. I literally have a magnetic notelet on my fridge door and I write on it my shopping list as I find I need something! 🤣. That said I live two minutes from a supermarket not the three hours you do 🙈. You do an amazing job. Btw it was me who said about the semolina in crumble but you don’t need to buy the fine stuff for it. If you use course in other stuff just use it. I do. It gives a lovely biscuity flavour to the crumble. X

Costco is still worthwhile for our family. But we stick with a list of essentials, bread, chicken, eggs, limited fruit, baking products like cocoa, etc. With the occasional treat of frozen perogies or such. While waiting in the check out line it still amazes me what and the quantity people have in their carts 😊
@OurSmallFootprint
@OurSmallFootprint Месяц назад
I find it amazing some of the carts that have only a few items too, I don’t think I’d shop at Costco for only a few things! I try and buy treats for the kids mindfully, but generally speaking I’m pretty happy with how I think my trolley would be perceived heh, though I do get looks for the quantity and then I think, it’s a wholesaler! These people with 6 items in their trolley are the weird ones! Not me heh

You are absolutely correct about Costco being more affordable if you are mindful about what you buy, and how much scratch cooking you do. If you buy more prepared foods, you will always spend more, no matter where you shop. Also knowing prices of the items that you buy, and how to determine if the price currently is a lower price, or if it is higher then, skip it this month. 😊

My family eat a very different style of food when compared to your family but we are very similar in keeping staples and an ingredient pantry. I did try menu planning pantry but it was so expensive. In my ingredient staples pantry, like you stated, we are not bound to meal X just because it's on the menu.

Yes, for us, I think the ingredient pantry was the big turning point for us to be able to make the change to longer between shops and cheaper than we were, we are lucky that our overheads are so low we can spend what we do on groceries, but even so I think we eat wonderfully for a fairly low price.

If I was shopping the way you do, which is amazing. I would check every week for the half price staples you use and do a click and deliver to your Mums, as long it was ok with her. That way you could always make the most of all the specials, being a member I don’t think you have to pay for extra deliveries.
@OurSmallFootprint
@OurSmallFootprint Месяц назад
I tend to not even look at the specials in between shops, I feel like I might buy something that I may not actually need and end up spending more than I need to because I'm taking advantage of those sales, if that makes sense! I think you have to spend a certain amount for free delivery, but don't quote me on that hehe. Previously as well, mum worked full time in an office, she has only just shifted to working from home full time, so I might have to trial it now that she's home all the time to receive deliveries :)

I think if more people are working in a kitchen the meal plans definitely help to make sure food is still there! Awesome video! I really appreciate you taking the time to explain your process as we are trying to transition to more about buying but it is so difficult to wrap my head around when I’ve been shopping weekly for so long. May sound like a silly question … but how do you work out what your baseline is if you don’t meal plan ? Do you have a set recipes that are on rotation ? My recipe imagination is not very strong yet 😅
@OurSmallFootprint
@OurSmallFootprint Месяц назад
I think I use averages, like as in the pasta’ish meal twice a week, potato and veg with a side prob 3 times a week and then maybe a rice dish and a pizza/bread style night! If that makes sense, we don’t always follow that, but if I have that as a starting point then it makes it easier to understand! But also it’s running out a few times too lol, and realising you need to bump quantities to make it through! And bumping some things to more than you need so that you always have a little buffer.
@leeoregan9766
@leeoregan9766 Месяц назад
Hi! to add to Nyssa's reply it's always good to write down what you use in a week...eg: 9 rolls of toilet paper, you merely bump that up to 18 for a fortnight, then expand on that for your monthly goals. Say Dishwashing stuff is x amount per week, then purchase best price per use x how many uses- brand you use lasts two weeks, you need 2 for a month. Start with your basics- your weekly purchases, then expand to typical meals you eat each week and ingredients used.... now you can expand to 4 weeks of ingredients. You're able to better look at if bulk is cheaper- cost per oz or for us metric mob.... per 100g, once you know how much you need you can multiply it out as Nyssa showed in her pasta example. Start with a fortnightly shop, whilst jotting down during that fortnight what you needed to grab from the store and expand your next fortnight's list. Practise that for a few fortnights until it feels second nature, now you can expand to 3 weeks.... so on and so on. When you shop your cupboard fridge and freezer for dinner it becomes much less stressful and far more cost savings as you'll begin to purchase cheaper in season stuff and expand recipe options.
@OurSmallFootprint
@OurSmallFootprint Месяц назад
Yes, I didn’t jump straight into 8 weeks, we initially did fortnightly, then 4 weekly and then 6 and now 8/9 :)

Well explained. I never meal plan, but decide day to day too. Just thinking, it’s even hard to get things defrosted to use each day with the cold here lol. It is, as you say, being mindful of stock you have, past use, and keeping inventory levels as desired. As chief shopper, it becomes second nature. You easily get use to what costs what where. The trick with Costco is to not get taken in by the big quantities unless you can see yourself using an item up in a relative time frame and being mindful of unit or 100 gm costs. Always shopping the specials you find everywhere if it’s items you constantly use or a special treat or something you intend to use in a trial recipe is the way to go. Shopping is never a one stop shop these days. I have been meaning to ask, how have you been finding stock feed costs and managing all the menagerie’s food? It must be frustrating when you do forget to get an item. Hopefully, D can get locally if push comes to shove.

Thank you Nyssa for your great advice. I was going about shopping so wrong by trying to figure out specific meal plan for everyday so I could shop monthly. Youve got my brain working now.😄

I think some people find meal planning the way to go! It’s not how my brain works though lol, I don’t like having set meals, yes we eat similar meals in rotation, but I like to make choices based on availability, weather and effort for each day heh

I can't get over how much cheaper food is in Australia vs my region of the US. We eat like this as well. Good price, available, eat what we have. A protein, veg, maybe a stretcher for the carb eaters. It is simpler, but not easier. What's for supper? What ever needs to be eaten next! B

I'm not sure that it is once you convert it, from what I have seen! But There are such different pricing ranges throughout the whole US! But everything I'm buying is in $/100g or per kg, not in oz/lb, and our dollar is also worth 1AUD is 0.67USD currently. I thought about doing some conversions etc, because I know I have a lot of US viewers, but it would be a lot of work lol :D

There is definitely stuff cheaper if you look at prices, there's stuff that isn't, of course, but you just have to be mindful I reckon! :D

Kids eat more when at home. Get out and about doing activities and not be like bored eating. Head to homeschool groups, library trips, excursions etc

Planning meals will save you money. I just can't cook the meals on the days I planned to cook them, either I short myself time wise and I cook something that is quicker. Love how you plan and shop!TFS!!!❤

New follower here. Have loved watching your videos. Have you done a kitchen tour and a video on how you store all your food? Would love to see this if possible.

Only very minimally, at the moment our kitchen stuff is spread across a large space lol. We're still in the process of building in the kitchen space and preferably an enclosed pantry, some of the shelving and fridge/freezer are up on the building and some is down with me, I store a lot of things in the big black totes and barrels from Bunnings, and they are sort of stacked in a way that I know where things are but not necessarily in a 'good' way lol. I'm hoping to buy the new framework for the kitchen next week so we can get the new roof up and start working on making the kitchen a more ergonomic place and I'll bring everyone along as I try and figure out what will work and ask advice lol.
