@@intellectualiconoclasm3264 Dude, Phosphex isn't used by anyone in the Imperium. It isn't Napalm, it is *worse*. It burns without air, burns metal, actively seeks out movement, and crawls across the ground rather than leaving burning puddles. Also, its STC was destroyed by a Techpriest that saw its horror first-hand. Had it been in use, the Vraksians would likely have it too, not to mention if you bring it into contact with Chaos...

As it has been previously said that if they are led by a commander that doesn't serve on the frontline and suggests another approach then human wave banzai-bayonet with extra sauce attacks the death korps might just do whatever they think is proper because the commander is obviously insane :p

I choose to interpret this in another fashion. He and his men, knowing full well that the best he could expect was a court martial for his actions, staged his 'death' and swapped clothes with a fallen comrade. Who's going to know the difference between kreigsmen if they swap gasmask and rank? Attas now continues his shenanigans as some other random guardsman.

I couldn't find the exact number but at the Battle of Vimy Ridge about 1,000 guns fired throughout the entire battle with "a nearly limitless supply of artillery shells". Artillery can most certainly get chaotic.

By the time the traitor marines popped up making sure ALL defenders and their icons and structures were dead, gone and pulverized was the ONLY thing that mattered anymore. No amount of ammo is enough to matter more than the possibility of the world becoming quite literally a portal to the warp.

Any commander unwilling to shell his own position is unwilling to win. This is really not hyperbole, during ww2, Korea, and Vietnam, danger close bombardment or back scratching as it is colloquially referred is often used to blunt otherwise overwhelming engagements.

To put the bombardment into perspective: The artillery barrage at the beginning of Operation Michael during the German Spring Offensive, the "Kaiserschlacht", in WW1, saw 3.5 million shells fired by 6.600 artillery pieces over the span of five hours. Vraks had over *ten* *times* the number of artillery pieces, and over *thirty* *times* the number of shells deployed, with the barrage lasting *four* *days*. The Siege might be the equivalent of the Battle of Verdun, or the Western Front of WW1 in general in 40k, but the sheer scale of men, logistics and material involved in just this *one* *barrage* really boggles the mind once you let that sink in.

I calculated it. 80 million over 96 hours: 800K+ per hour. 3.5 million over 5 hours: 700k per hour. It's worse than Kaiserschlacht in shell density, for almost 20 times the length of time (and using bigger shells on average).

Why for the love of the Emperor would the writers kill off Attius? One NAMED Krieg character that isn't grimdark incarnate that has a proper use other than dying for the Imperium, and he dies. Yes it is 40k, should say enough about the expenditure of life, but there needs to be more characters that people can like and associate with. Not to mention he was essentially Commissar Cain, except from Krieg.

Colnel Attius had the right idea (yeah yeah, rewatching this vid). Just so you know, standard procedure during WWI was as close as to the opposing trench as possible. As one Coldstream Guard Sergeant said after the war, if you were not close enough to your covering barrage to take some casualties you were too far away. WWI troops would literally wait within metres of their barrage for it to lift so they could assault the trench (assuming the terrain enabled them to keep up with said barrage to begin with!). If you were 500 metres away from the enemy trench when the barrage lifted, you were TRULY fucked (and in most cases still behind your own lines!).

As I listen to this, it reminds me of a book I read on the Meuse-Argonne offensive where “Blackjack” Pershing constantly sent more and more men at the Hindenburg line/Kriemhilde Stellung and every time the men were pushed back he was just like “Send MOAR” And this attias reminds me of the veteran doughboys who knew better then to run head first into the heavy defenses which would then lead to a court martial or death by firing squad.

80 million shells... I was curious so I looked up how much was dropped in Vietnam (the most the us ever dropped anywhere) it was only 7 million tons, between 1957-1975, just to get a sense of scale for this. WW1 only used 1.5 billion shells.

As a published (but amateur) WW1 historian I'm highly impressed to hear a 'realistic' discussion of artillery logistics in 40k! However i can't understand why they would still be using human gun crews - loading and firing a howitzer for hours in accordance with a mathematically precise fire timetable is surely a job where servitors would be much more effective. I'd retain a human battery commander to supervise them.

I imagine the Kriegers don't make much use of servitors/they had such limited means of producing them during their civil war that a servitor became more valuable than guardsmen. Or they just don't see a point for making servitors specifically for loading artillery guns (remember most basic servitors are single task creations) when they have enough men to load guns without wasting resources on lobotomies/making brain dead clones and mechanization.

Servitor loaders would require the supervision and maintenance of a tech priest for each gun crew, which would effectively transfer authority of the gun to the mechanicus, then you get politicking and the krieg probably wouldn't accept that as a reasonable trade off for a few thousand crippled guardsmen.

So, I heard the estimations for munitions that needed to be shipped and how absurd we're suppose to believe the logistics are... 3.8 million tons of explosives! But I did an estimate for the Battle of Verdun in WW1. In that battle alone the German army fired approximately 60 million artillery shells weighing an average of 50kg (110lb) or 3.3 million tons of ordinance. This from the army of 1 nation at the beginning of the 20th century. I am confident that if you were to devote an entire planet to the production and shipment of armies and war materials, that it would not even blink at an order of 3.3 million tons of ordinance. In fact, the reality is that the majority of the transport for the materials in the siege of vraks would be in space... where weight is virtually a non factor once you get a transport ship on a correct trajectory... Its likely that that amount of ordinance wouldn't be more than one or two ships moving from Krieg to Vraks, dropping the ordinance off, and then leaving again. Also, with the fact that the army is in place for a number of years, it's safe to assume that quantity of ordinance (plus a rather large reserve on top of that) would already be in place and ready for use, and that any order placed for replenishment of supplies would only serve to top off the powder rooms.
