Am I the only one who finds these numbers to be ridiculously low for a planet spanning war? I mean, it should be impossible to defend an entire world with only 8 milion men. Germany raised 11 million men during ww2 with a population of less than 100 million. And we have to believe that a planet of 500 billion, entirely focused on industry, is incapable raising a bigger army?
I guess there are regulations on how many troops are suppossed to be on a planet at a time. Plus i'm pretty sure a lot of Armageddon Regiments were off world helping out in other wars. Also these numbers only show the start of the war. As far as I know the War for Armageddon is still going on to this day. Cause the Orks dug themself some nice holes to continue bothering the planet whenever they feel like it.
These Numbers are way way way to small. Even an Feudal Zivilisation could raise around one percent of their Population, which would in the case of armageddon be 5 Billion Soldier, but an industrialized Zivilisation could raise at least ten percent of their Population or in the case of Armageddon at least 50 Billion Soldier.
This subject is one of my few problems with warhammer 40k official stuff, mostly because I have a calculated that the population of the Imperium of man is somewhere between several hundred Quadrillion and tens of Quintillions in number. It is a wartime society meaning a large population would be military. so Quadrillions of guardsmen would be active. if even a single percent of the smaller number is true. it also makes me question the amount of space marines as well, for a super gigantic sci-fi universe the world ending battles are ungodly small in comparison

8 million doesn't seem like that much really, who ever wrote the conflict had no sense of scale. WW2 Involved closer to 100 million people than 10 who would have been the period equivalent to the imperial guard.
Honestly this is true for much of warhammer 40k. The numbers never make senses. If they scaled it correctly the numbers would always be incredibly huge (the imperium has a population of four quadrillion) and very difficult to picture battle of this scale. Just ignore the numbers.

Something I've always thought about GW's numbers is that the military numbers should be at least 10 times larger for what they claim happens. While the ship crew sizes have the opposite problem, with some of them needing 10k crew members. wtf
Why would you empty a planet of your best soldiers who have trained and lived their all their lives, know the environment and how to fight in it when you know it is a key strategic planet and under treath of a massive ork invasion. And then ask for troops from as far as Cadia (which is on the other side of the galaxy) to defend it. And we talk about the soviets you conscripted 10% of their population during ww2 but if we take the population of Armagedon which is estimated to be around 500 Billions, and trained and armed 1% of the population they could field a force of 5 billion. More then enough to beat the orks from defensive positions
From what ive gathered. There are verry many super important places. The imperium is like a feudal, religious version of a monarchy, with several attributes from nazi germany, and soviet russia. You are basically fighting and endless loosing battle constantly. Supply lines and transportation is pretty damn random etc etc etc. And it is also a verry corrupt, verry inefficient empire with shoddy communications.
Arse Blaster personally I would like to see Arch do a series of extremely in depth lore on each of the Primarchs (most likely excluding the two unknown primarchs) similar to how he did the video on Conrad Curze aka The Night Haunter.
1.I figured a Black Templars Crusade is approximately 600 Astartes, the total forces on Armageddon being 1800 Marines. 2. The loophole for going over 1,000 Astartes is for when the Chapter is on Crusade, and since the Black Templars are always on Crusade, they are technically Codex-compliant...
the thing black Templars still have to obey the tithe edict of gene seed and they seem to avoid doing so. so yeah they are breaking the codex. crusade you still got to obey the rules.

A lot of Warhammer 40k stuff has scale issues like this. Like they'll have "enormous armies" that comprise a total of like 2 million men, or supposedly crowded imperial starships that actually have a dramatically smaller crew compliment per square meter than modern warships. I mean it isn't necessarily the writers' fault-envisioning planetary scale battles isn't exactly easy. Also, Arch may have low-balled regiment sizes., some regiments in the lore are listed well into the hundreds of thousands to even a quarter of a million or more.-especially for more infantry heavy regiments. The number of Space Marines and Titans employed gets across the scale of the conflict a lot more successfully than troop numbers.
Glad to know I wasn't the only one thinking that these numbers sounded ridiculously low. China has over 2 million soldiers alone so a full on hive planet with 500 billion souls having so few soldiers just seems almost comically disproportionate
Even such small country as Denmark have a "PDF" I know that's not really what's it's called but to compare it's easier. It consist of 46600 people that's a little less then 1% of the total population. Now a hive world would have a much larger population yet they don't even get close to 1% for some reason. If we just take 1 billion and say 1% that comes up to 10 million they should easily have a PDF of 1.2 billion people that are trained in very basic combat "this end fires this end takes ammo and this is a knife" when the problem always comes down to "we got plenty of guns but not enough to use them" you would think they would get smarter But then again, everybody needs to have a chance to touch the imperium that's why we have the high 12 to begin with. If every time someone attacks they need to match that number since they are dug in
Joratox Darkblade the problem is the PDF in hives generally have more basic an armoury than the imperial guard normally fielding autoguns rather than lasrifles. Armageddon probably does have at least 1% men at arm's but they're needed more in other parts of the galaxy so although they exist they're just not there. The training on the PDF probably isn't the greatest and moral would take a massive hit as a result meaning that when and entire platoon of pdf forces are blazing away with autoguns at a bunch of charging orks and doing absolutely nothing they are much more likely to think fuck this I'm out of here and run away which in turn will probably cause the platoons on the flanks to fall back if for no other reason than to stop being outflanked and so on and so forth until the entire front is in unorganized retreat, admittedly the same can and will and did happen with the guard but it takes more for that to happen particularly if there's a commissar in the squad.
I could only imagine how awesome this would be as a Dawn of War campaign. I mean, Sisters of Battle, dozens of Space Marine chapters, the Imperial Guard, and countless orcs? The only problem I could see is the enemy variety getting stale.
Even when we were together they had to be their own Special Group of 'Knights Brothern' or whatever. Now they're Over-Zealous Crusaders but we still love them, even if they can be quite..Special at times.
Let's see, there's massive, and I mean really massive Imperial force and Ork force already on the planet. Angron's going to have a harder time getting anywhere when he showed up for a rematch.
lol 14,600 Astartes sounds like alot but during 30k a single Legion consisted of a HUNDRED THOUSAND, more than enough to kekstomp Tyranid hivefleets, Ork Waaghs, and the entire Tau race. Too bad spoiled brat Horus HAD to turn on his Father

Hi Arch, if I remember correctly the Black Dragons were all deployed to single large island refinery complex north of Armageddon secundus which was full of chemical storage facilities. They ended up wrecking the place and were fighting the orks in ankle deep pools of chemical nastiness - needless to say the lightly armoured orks didn't do so well in that scenario, so the battle was a technical success for the imperium as the orks were beaten - but the facility was unusable afterwards. Oh and I think the civilian workers had been evacuated before the fighting started - so no unfortunate witnesses.
It's not actually that large scale, the German army in WW1 had more troops on the western front alone than all the Imperial guard and militia forces shown here.

When he starts off saying "in any other fantasy or sci-fi world, this would be an _Extinction Level Event_ there really is no contest. Great video! however, I just thought I'd mention something in reference to the bit on black templar numbers, that according to the forgeworld horus herasy books, 10-15 thousand would be extremely low for an old legion of astartes, the salamanders, one of the smallest of the legions, numbering aproximately 89k. Of course, I realize that theres all too many sources of canon on all things 40k, so Im sure you got your estimates from a source with at least as much legitimacy, just thought id point it out.
I love the detail, but the insults towards the Gretchin/Grot that wrote out the unit counts for the orks had me rolling. Thank you Sir for another fun and informative video.
Because orks had Ghazghkull Mag Uruk Thraka, most cunning ork ever, almost as cunning as potted plant. I am even more impressed that orks survived so many Astartes combined with 200 regiments of various shit. Also fucking 7 titan legions . 7! So it's possible that they had mayby quite many biggest titans ;-;.
Your comments are exactly why the Imperium keeps getting its ass handed to it by Orks, even with Astartes help. Never ever underestimate the greenskin menace. As for how the Orks survived it? My guess is sheer weight of numbers (the Orks get called 'the Green Tide' a lot in the fluff for a very good reason), and lots of Gargant-class walkers (ranging from Stompas to 'BY THE THRONE WHAT IS THAT?!' size) both the ones brought to the planet and built *on* the planet during the war.
nathan behr Probably between 100-200 nothing too ridiculous with some modest rejuvenate(not sure if that's the right spelling) treatments. Plus there's the whole millions of orks think he can't die so he possibly can't.
Both of Arse Blaster's answers are correct. As of 8th edition tomorrow, Yarrick will probably be this 200-300 (average human lifespan + rejuvenation treatments without admech bionics is around 500 years... I think).
Never seen Arch so wrong in a video, the best chapter of the cursed founding isn't the black dragons, it's obviously the Lamenters, the heroes the Imperium doesn't deserve. All hail their almost impossible to paint chapter emblem.
The Lamenters are solid Battle Brothers. While openly I can not associate with them, I do praise them for their unending defense of the Imperium. Had I even more connections I would send them some personal relics to replace what the Minotaurs took.

I like the Wolves of Fenris *_waaaaaaaaaaaay_* more, but I find myself more in line with Blood Angels tactics. Plus I suck at painting and have the shakiest hand since PTSD-ridden veterans came home from WWI, and solid red isn't all that hard to do.
Loving this video series. I can't wait till you have to try and make a video for the original war for armegedon and have to try and track down every single system, starfort, and asteroid field the space wolves visiyed at the end of the war. I would also love for the format you use for these videos to be used for the space marines battles novels but i think i'd have to wait around for the 40th millenium for that to come around.
um arch i just looked it up again but in the series Helsreach (the youtube adaption of the Audiobook) Helbrecht speaks of over 900 warriors of the Black Templars
Hey Arch, you really improved on the force layout visibility. Last time you were talking about the Imperial defenders and throwing up force size comparisons, they faded into the backdrop and were hard to count. This way is much better. I think it has a lot to do with the white outline of the troops, though the brighter backdrop may have something to do with it. For the listing of Astartes forces, I think it would have been nice to have names and force count in text on screen. I lost track about 2/3rds of the way in. Keep up the good work!

The power of bulshit has his limits, each ork has a small impact on the immaterium that when combined with make with any other orks makes thing tha should not work work because they believe in it. The more orks and the bigger and angrier the orks the more bulshit they can get away with. For example, a few thousand orks would maybe have enough influence on the warp to make a truck that should not quite work but given a few modification could work work. A few millions orks can have enough influence in the immaterium to make a gargant which is an insult to the most basic of logic and that the law of gravity state clearly that it should collapse on itself work. The problems is that these objects are still part of the material universe so their is a limit to the bullshit they can put up with. That does not mean that they can't use the magical power of bullshit from time to time. There is the tale of a looted (I think it was a leman russ or a baneblade I don't remember)tank whose engine was blown away more than 10 times by the imperial guards and was always repaired and put back in service. The tank was finally captured by the IG and they tried to examine how the tank was still going on. So they looked in the compartment where the engine should have been to find it empty with only a drawing of an engine and the words vrooom vrooom on it. The problems is that 1, their latent psychic powers are only strong enough to make shits that already exist work (If a truck has lost its wheels the ork can't make the wheels turn) and 2 thing only work because the orks believe it work. If an ork believe his truck is broken then it will be broken (and the orks unlike the eldars for example are not aware of their influence on the warp for the most part and so dont consciously influence it they believe their trucks work because they are orky and everything orky is awesome) . This is in fact a problem for the orks, if enough orks die during a battle or the orks lose morale somehow, well things stop working.
The thing to remember about the Waagh power of the orks is that its 100% passive and relies on what orks think "how da tings should be", that's why ork weapons resemble actual functional weapons if very crudely and ork vehicles still resemble actual vehicles if rather remotely. Therefore if you can damage something to point that orks start thinking it shouldn't work, their powers won't make it work. Oh and the orks are totally unaware of this themselves and wouldn't belive you if you tried explaining it to them.
The Black Templars brought 900 Astartes to Armageddon across three crusades. The primary Crusade was commanded in orbit by High Marshal Helbrecht woth around 700 Astartes. Marshal Amalricht had around 100 Astartes near hive Volcanus, and the Helsreach Crusade under Reclusiarch Grimaldus numbered around 100 Astartes. This all comes from the book “Helsreach” where Helbrecht, Grimaldus, and Emperor’s Champion Bayard greet General Kurov upon first making planetfall.
When you (Arch) started describing the possible weapons the Ad Hoc squads could be using, I started thinking about 19th century Russian Partisan regiments that would have anything from branches to pitchforks to pikes to an occasional musket, if they were lucky to be a hunter/poacher before being drafted into a partisan regiment
Seeing the size of the other forces numbered (Companies, regiments) I would estimate 1 "mob" to be 1 3rd-6th edition detachment: 15 squads in trukks or bikes + 3 dreds, stompas, or battlewagons. Plus support grots and oddboyz, with crew needed for support/transport vessels
I may be late but, after re-reading the Helsreach Novel, in the first chapter Helbrecht states that he has arrived with over 900 Warriors to defend Helsreach, which gives a pretty precise number for the number of Templars present during the War for Armageddon.
If what you're talking about is what I think you're talking about the checkered pattern on the Ork's armor it has to do with the purge of Ullanor during the Great Crusade. IF I remember right, Horus and his Legion did such a number on the orks there that their collective psyche as a species was altered and they began to associate the checkered pattern of Horus' Shock troops with the kind of shock troops almost every ork aspires to be. Just like the associate red with going faster and paint things accordingly. Now that could be complete bollocks and I'm just talking out of thin air but I think that's what I remember reading somewhere.
What is this "First War" that you speak of? BTW, an Initiate of the Black Templars' chief duty is to provide additional ammunition to his assigned Battle Brother during battle, because "ran out of ammo" is not an acceptable excuse for leaving a purge half-finished. People might start confusing them for UltraSmurfs or fucking Eldar, of all things.
If I remember correctly, there were according to the Helsreach Novel 900 Black Templars involved in the Battle of Armageddon, one hundred of the got deployed to Helsreach under the Command of Grimaldus, while the Chapter Master Helbrecht took charge of the Space Battle. So the estimate of 750 would be a bit low. According to the Novel they haad the largest number of Astates Space Ships in Orbit, which was the Reason for helbrecht taking Command of the entire Fleet
