This is a video step by step on how to take acrylic skins that have dried from doing acrylic pours (pour painting) leftover on plastic, paper, photo paper, sheet protectors, glass, etc. You can easily make them yourselves. I got my supplies from www.lillyds.com but you can find them on Amazon, Etsy and other places too.

You have to put glue on several times... on the glass to skin... in the tray a few times and let it dry in between... several coats... read the tutorial on Lillyd's ... it is good advice... Just ignore the copy paper part.. And you have to really press well to seal it to insure no bubbles... when gluing glass onto paint skin and when gluing into tray again later

I love the gold tones in the skins you used. I like your use of the page protector to pour your skins and they are thin and soft to mold. I use a clothes pin to clamp down on the cabs while they dry to make sure of a tight fit.

Do you cover the skins with a gloss finish before you glue them to the the glass or does the glass give them enough shine? Love the video. You are a great teacher
@SandraLett
@SandraLett 6 лет назад
No... I use glass caboshons.... it is in the video of how I glue the glass to the dried skin and then cut out etc...
@pol2171
@pol2171 5 лет назад
What a great informative video, thank you so much Sandra. When cutting the skins have you every used a digital cutting machine, for example a Cricut or ScanNCut? Also, if I was cutting with scissors I would probably use fine embroidery scissors as they would give you a closer and finer cut - but I think you did an awesome job. Thank you for sharing your skills and experience. 💕💕💕💕💕
@SandraLett
@SandraLett 5 лет назад
Thank you. I think scissors are much better than a cricut. You need to move glass cabochon around in the glue on the paint to "set" it and squeeze out any air bubbles. Any scissors work fine

My favorite site for all in one purchase ( watch their tutorial too) and so that is glue, kit (get the kits... it is too much to keep up with to try to figure out mm size and which glass cabochon fits what tray.... so just go with a whole kit... very inexpensive... chains, glue, etc... www.lillyds.com

Hi Sandra, great video. You keep the acetate backing when you cut the acrylic skins? On other videos, most other artists peel the skins off the substrate then glue to the jewelry. Is there a particular reason why you keep the acetate backing on the skins? Thank you for sharing you expertise.
@SandraLett
@SandraLett 6 лет назад
If you watch the way I do this, it is much easier to glue your glass cabochon to the acrylic skin. Once it is dry, you cut around the piece of glass, then you can very easily peel off the acetate or whatever surface you had your acrylic skins adhered to. This makes for a much easier and tightier way to glue skins to the glass. If you are trying to work with a paper thin skin and trying to use glue to adhere it to the glass, you have a much harder situation to deal with. I think the way I explain makes sense. It was also on Lillyd's website in a tutorial. That is the way they explain gluing your glass to your plastic or paper or what have you. The only thing that won't peel off easily is paper or photo paper. So I just glue it straight into the tray attached to my skin, if that makes sense. Those types of surfaces are more porous and are not plastic enough to peel your skin off of
@ThereseArsenault
@ThereseArsenault 6 лет назад
OK so I should have listened to your video all the way to the end before asking my question. You do take the acetate off.......
@SandraLett
@SandraLett 6 лет назад
Yes.... to me this is by far the easiest method to use that I got from www.lillyds.com. It works beautifully this way!

@rosalindoster605
@rosalindoster605 5 лет назад
Hi Sandra, Just curious, can you cut up paintings and use them as well, or would that be too thick?
@SandraLett
@SandraLett 5 лет назад
It may be a bit too thick. It depends on the brand of jewelry you use. I use www.lillyds.com jewelry kits.. some of the trays are deeper. I know the ones from Michaels and Hobby Lobby are cheaper and very very shallow. As long as the glass cabochon that is glued to the canvas is glued into the tray below the edge of the metal part... if the canvas is above the edge of the metal tray, it won't seal in air tight with the glue (to prevent bubbles and moisture from getting in). I hope that makes sense
@keetheshopper

@SandraLett

Thank you Kimberly. I purchase the kits and the glue from www.lillyds.com. I cannot promise that it won't tarnish. But the kit includes the tray, cabochon and chain. It is probably more like costume jewelry.

What is the best paper to use for acrylic skins to just peel them off? I found out wax paper hasn't worked very well.
@SandraLett
@SandraLett 5 лет назад
Try butcher paper.. It is in my Amazon recommendations link or if you have a Hobby Lobby you can use a 40% off coupon and get it in the banner paper rolls area... but this is the specific name of it www.amazon.com/dp/B00LH02P78/?ref=idea_lv_dp_ov_d&tag=aiponsite-20&linkCode=ic6&ascsubtag=amzn1.ideas.266KNCFOYHI9C
@SandraLett
@SandraLett 5 лет назад
Also if you get sheet protectors like from an office supply store... those work really well.. glue cabochon on top of it or butcher paper and let it dry. Cut around the glass shape and the paper or plastic peels right off
@lilycessna3077
@lilycessna3077 5 лет назад
Hiya....I have some pours on just a thin plastic. If I cannot remove the plastic before I make the jewelry, will it be ok if I can't?
@SandraLett
@SandraLett 5 лет назад
Yes! Are you sure you cannot peal the plastic away? If it is thicker plastic and you can't remove it... you need to make sure that the paint that is glued to the bottom of the cabochon still lies BELOW the edge of the tray you are gluing it into. You do not want the paint or plastic exposed in any way.. or there will be moisture or possible air bubbles to get underneath the glass. I hope that makes sense
@lilycessna3077
@lilycessna3077 5 лет назад
Guess what! I finally did get some of the skin off the plastic. So glad, since you've mentioned possible air bubbles! WHEW and YES, it makes sense, moisture will reveal itself in the plastic if there is any moisture left, Thank YOU!@@SandraLett

Is the thickness of the skin critical? Can it be medium cardboard thickness or thinner?
@SandraLett
@SandraLett 5 лет назад
Definitely.... Sometimes it is almost paper thin. The key is to glue your glass cabochon down on the surface of the skin. Allow it to dry overnight. Then cut it out around the edge of the glass.. Then if you have something like butcher or parchment paper, it will peel off the back. If it is on something like paper that is porous, you cannot get that off... Either way, you then glue it down into your tray setting. You just need to make sure the thickness of the paint is not so thick that you see the edge over the tray it lays in, if that makes sense

What a shame Lilly’s doesn’t ship to Australia. I will google to find similar in Australian. Love all your videos
@SandraLett
@SandraLett 5 лет назад
There are probably plenty on Ebay and Etsy... the problem is , it is so much easier when you can get the whole kit... the tray and cabochon together.. when you purchase separately, you have to know the exact size of the cabochon to match the tray which is very confusing

What kind of glue did you use please?
@SandraLett

I use Lilly Glaze glue from www.lillyds.com where I get the jewelry. It is not thick and sticky like E6000, it has no odor, its waterbased and cleans up easy with alcohol

Hi Sandra, i followed all you instructions and most of my jewels made bubbles underneath the glass. What the problem? Please help me.
@SandraLett
@SandraLett 6 лет назад
I am not sure... Did you use Lillys Glue? I have not used any other brand... And maybe not enough pressure pushing the cabochons down on the paint? I do not know... I have had a few, but I have done dozens and dozens of pieces... I press really really firm though
@lisaalbert4265
@lisaalbert4265 6 лет назад
No sorry, i didnt followed all your instructions because i did not use lillyds glue but e6000 and diamond glaze. And full of bubbles. I cant order lillys glue because it will cost 50.00 bucks to have it here in Canada. 40.00 for shipping.

I have been experimenting with acrylic skins and jewelry for a few months now. My problem is after completion about a week or two later some start to turn blue. Have you ever heard of that? I use Diamond Glaze paint and have used a couple different acrylic thinners. Sometimes it just looks like the glue may have dried and made it's own pattern as well. I'm so confused as to the problem. Any help?
