I’m lost. I JUST WATCHED the guy in the blue roll Reader over onto his but 3 times EXACTLY like what reader did 4 times that he scored 8 points with then they took it all away and yet THEY SCORED the guy in blue 6 points. UGH!
In freestyle, if both wrestlers expose their back, the question is always who initiated the move. He obviously convinced the officials that at least some of those double exposures were the result of Ruth pushing into Reader, and not Reader pulling Ruth over the top.
Reader would've won had the scoring stayed as originally scored. It's the problem you get when scoring is subjective. Did they go far enough to earn the points or not? I think most people probably felt the original score of 12-4 was correct. I would be interested in seeing their explanation as to why they changed.
Refs should resign for a year and think about how much they suck... get training and come back at Fargo. Start there. Better yet... work some regional kids/cadet tournaments first. THEN! come to Fargo. We'll see how they do after that.
My thoughts 1: How the hell do you call the offensive turns on the mat and then take like 6 points back! 2. Ruth had two leg laces where Reader does NOT break a 90 degree and goes hand to hand. I believe that is ONLY 1 point. This makes or refs looks like idiots.
In retrospect Ruth had all the talent/skill in the world but his lax style especially in takedowns stopped him from fully transitioning into the beast he was in Folk.
Freestyle is too opinionated for me. Two guys can get in a scramble and when they stop the action it may be like 6-2 and neither know how they scored. Lol
They handed Ed another chance because Ron won the first exchange and it should’ve been a 1st period tech. It’s been known for almost a decade that pen state guys have had some pretty favorable ref calls in NCAA and the trails.
Freestyle is just plain stupid. All this gimmicky point BS, and the refs completely control the outcome of most matches. Wrestling is about takedowns and controling your opponent, not cheap .1 second tilts. The world should switch to Folkstyle.
Yeah maybe not switch but combine some elements of folk style like 1 hold 1 exposure, no exposure if you're not the offensive wrestler. If that was changed I would have no problem saying free is more exciting and the better version. A guy shoots in on you and you expose yourself and him simultaneously with a chest lift and you get 4 points but have you really controlled him or dominated him? Doesn't feel like it when the scramble ends up with 4-2 because the "huge thrown" wrestler got the takedown in the end. I think folk needs the out of bounds rigor in the neutral position that free has though.
No ncaa means nothing when the trails come up. Didn’t a d2 guy represent the country last year. A career earns you money and college isn’t giving you a dime.
Bbd L I get it. But this match did not make his career. Very few people watched or know anything about the match. But most of us watched his college career and now that he is in MMA that career is what he will be known for.
Never seen a challenge have that huge of a point differential impact! I think maybe two out of 8 chest wrap scores were Ruth’s but this had me second guessing every single point haha freestyle can be so weird sometimes. Do you know how hard it is at the highest level to get in on a savages leg and take him down without even exposing your back the slightest while they are only trying to do that! Insanity! The elite of the elite at freestyle the J. Smith type were just amazing at their ability to score with leg attacks with such precision to not expose a shoulder at all!
i got into a match and it was a finals match the final score was 28-20 i was up and ended up pinning the guy with ten seconds left just a crazy match we just kept scoring
This is where the rules ran amok. Pure exposure is not wrestling - it's something else. I was killed by the 'never-ending' leg lace by the Korean's. No disrespect - these were the rules. The South Korean wrestler's I spent time with were some of the most respectful and amazing people I have ever spent time with. They were awesome!
Seems like affirmative action has hit freestyle wrestling. 9 point swing after a "review" and then given an additional 4 points for two leg locks after time expired.
I had it 12-2, then Ed got the takedown. 12-4. I have NO idea how they scored it, what they did...unless 2 of those pullovers were somehow considered back exposures for Ruth, which is insane.
Yeah it is, that's why were so mad about it, bc any wrestler could do it better, they butchered the scoring by 9 points in that exchange??? And it was right originally
This is why I think freestyle scoring is dumb compared to folkstyle. In folkstyle, you would just say it’s a scramble and you’d award points to whoever ended up on top when the scramble was over. You shouldn’t have to worry about divvying up points in these ambiguous intermediary positions based on who you *think* was initiating the *move*.
My highest match was my junior year. 19-17 win over a really strong shooter. Caught him in an awkward cradle and held it somehow till time ran out cause I was down 16-17 and got my 3 points for near fall. What a match. Lol
what in the blue hell happened there!? and here i thought MMA was alone with the worst sport reffing and scoring, low and behold how wrong i was, just...fcking wow!!
On that first challenge, I came up with 8-4 Reader. 1 of the turns was a back and forth with no reset in between, so it was the same 2 called twice. 1 of the turns didn't break the plane. I can only assume that they decided that the last turn was initiated by Ruth, and that's why he got a 3 point takedown instead of Reader getting a 2 point exposure, but they also gave him the takedown afterwards, so even giving every benefit of every doubt, they gave Ruth the same takedown twice to get to 7-6.
If your doing high school or college wrestling don’t watch this watch folk style wrestling. This is freestyle wrestling and it’s way more confusin folk style is pretty simple and straightforward coming from a high school wrestler
The scoring of the first sequence was objectively atrocious. Originally scored 12-4, then looked at, and changed to 6-7. It was a 9 point switch and swing. Disgusting.
Crazy they blew the whistle right when Ruth had a lace... Whats up with that? Did the challenge stop it? Of course, that was the idea before they completely changed the score. Didn't see that coming at all. I thought the score was pretty much correct. Ok... That was completely insane! All the refs involved should be sent back to pee wee leagues.
At some point Jon Reader has to make an adjustment. If the refs see something one way and keep calling 2 for Ruth, you gotta do something else. Jon had no offense, zero. Dude was a national champ for Christ's sake. If he gets after it and gets himself a take down, maybe he gets some turns , who knows.
Its totally Readers fault that the refs are little blind mice. He should change his whole style on the fly and maybe, just maybe they will like his new style and award him points for that.
not what you like to see, officiating like this is bad for the sport. They might need to find a way to involve both coaches, or other coaches or something men, cause this didn't feel right.
This cause me to lose interest in wrestling, a sport I loved. Looks like politics has gotten into the officiating. Already said goodbye to football, basketball now it is adios to wrestling.
