Watch as Toronto Maple Leafs winger Kyle Clifford runs over Petr Mrazek, and David Ayres ends up having to play goal for the Carolina Hurricanes Canes vs Leafs Feb 22 2020
I’ve never watched hockey in my life but as a baseball fan I can on my imagine how hard it is to be a goalie. And for this guy to come in is so BADASS.
actually Sshooter444, the Canes had a 3 point lead when Ayers came in the game and he quickly gave up 2..... they the magic started. Ayers got over the jitters and the rest of the Canes that were left dug in deep and played an amazing 3 period. I could watch the whole 2nd and 3rd period over again right now. Good for you David Ayers!!!
@@needleneedle6294 quick correction, it was a 2 goal lead when Ayers came in, it became 3 during that power play for charging, (Ayers actually set it up!)
I have this recurring dream where I get called up to goal tend for for the Red Wings and I get lost on my way down to the ice so I'm just wandering around and around all geared up trying to find the ice. I just love these sort of feel good stories!
theretiringbarber NAZIMOUSE will screw it up trying to push all their SJW agendas.... by the time those D-bags are done with it Ayers will be a Native American lesbian triple amputee.... don’t believe me? Look at what those idiots did to marvel and Star Wars.... #nazimousesucks #disneyistheworst
As a leafs fan, I hate admit, yes we lost to a zamboni driver, as a hockey fan it always amazing to see someone come into a situation like this with so much pressure and just be able to focus is incredible so props to him. On a side note, I applaud Clifford for tryna be as safe as he could with what little space he had before making contact with mrazek. If Clifford didn’t get his arm out at the last possible second, it could have been even worse, for both players as it would have been a head on head collision
@@davidrichter9164 Uhhh.. that's not the point. Maybe we cant do better.. but maybe that's cuz we're not professional players. These big contract players couldn't beat their own 42 yr old zamboni driver.
One month until the one-year anniversary of this game! I completely agree, if I were David Ayers, I’d be very nervous but very thrilled at the same time! And the fact that he recorded a win on that night makes it even more incredible!! I’m a leaf fan but I still gave Ayers full credit!
I still can't believe this...they lose to their own emergency goalie...6 -3 and he stopped 8 out of 10 shots taken at him. The Leafs gave up in the 3rd and stopped trying, but huge props to Ayres for hanging in there and helping the Canes win in dominating performance. Edit: I just noticed the Canes head coach reaction to Ayres, he did not seem happy, but I bet he was happy after
Wonder if the Canes can package his skill set before Monday's trade deadline with promises in trade gets him a matching top /bottom. Great story for the Canes not so much for Leafs.. Soldier on
I still get goosebumps when I hear the song “Heads will roll” because of David Ayres walking out to it. Very inspirational, I was a leafs fan who was cheering for the Canes to win by the end of that game, largely to the leafs being awful in that game, but also because Ayres is the GOAT.
@@thurstonhowell2262 -- Yeah, the Carolina D stepped up big time, cutting off virtually all shooting lanes. As an Avs fan, I'm glad Carolina doesn't play that way every game :-D
4:08 Coach shaking his head in disbelief, doesn't realize this is the best guy in the house to do the job. One of the best emergency goalie suit ups ever. He killed it!
gray rey lmao did you not read what i said? Scott foster was not credited with the win during that game. Ayres is the first emergency goalie to actually win a game
For my two cents. This was the best possible outcome of this unfortunate scenario (losing both goalies). If Toronto had won, there would have been plenty of speculation that he deliberately threw the game and people's principals would've been brought into question. This, however, turned out to be a re-affirming story of (a) The exceptional degree of this man's honor to disregard any petty, misconceived sense of "duty" to his hometown (it has been said that altruism is the root of all suffering as Ayn Rand put it), and simply gave it his best effort as a human being, and (b) how a man of relatively modest origins can take on challenges well above people's expectations and triumph. Like I was saying, the best possible outcome.
Mrazek had just as much right to play that puck as Clifford. In fact, NHL rules state that the opposing player must make every attempt to get out of the way of a goalie playing the puck (and Mrazek got to the puck first).
@@misterc6012 I saw footage of them sewing the name on the back of the jersey as this was happening. They probably didn't have a professional seamstress but someone who could sew the name on and keep it relatively centered lol.
You can't be angry at Clifford. No one expects the goal tender to be all the way up the ice like that. This wasn't deliberate ramming. By the way, Ayres is a kidney transplant recipient. He practices with the Marlies and the Leafs to keep his skill level up. He is also a coach. Busy man.
As a Kings fan, I know Cliffy saw him, at least peripherally. I'm not sure there should have been any penalty assessed. It's not the trapezoid and Mrazek is fair game.
No better story, Peter mrazek gets freight trained by Kyle Clifford, 42 year old David Ayers playing against his team where he drives the farm teams zamboni. Back stops his team to a 6-3 win. You can’t make this stuff up
People act like the driver carried them through the game lol. Carolina has pretty good Defense, and I’d imagine everybody stepped up their game since the person they have in net is some geezer who’s never played in the NHL
Back in my day you were allowed to hit the goaltender as long as he was out of the crease and handling the puck. In this situation, and as a defenseman, you just don't allow the other team to shoot.
Cool. Finally at 42 he realized his dream of playing a game in NHL. Not any game, an official game and got a win out of it. The salary for one game and the bonus of winning the game will be the cherry on top of the ice cream. I bet he will laminate the check to dis play in his guest salon, or auction it off online, will be fun to look at.
"You've gotta wonder whats going through your head as Rod Brind'amor?" Id say 4:08 is pretty much what was going through his head lmao "fuck me. im fighting for a playoff spot in one of the most ruthless divisions and ive gone through two tendys in one night. fuck. me. hard."
No, it isn't. By rule, Mrazek was absolutely allowed to play the puck ANYWHERE on his own end of the ice, and the opposing player is required to make every effort to avoid contact, even if it's 20' outside the crease.
BrindA'mour DID respect this guys dream. After the 2 quick goals Ayers gave up, and they went to the locker room, BrindA'mour just told him, "hey, you gotta stop the puck buddy... now here is we are gonna do..." Coach treated him just like any other player in the room and made him a Hurricane for the next 20 minutes.
I’m very Happy for you David. What a great experience. Great game. Know Toronto Maple leafs. Get your shit together. We all know you can, play with passion not pay check. You have the best fans in the world and that’s a fact but don’t take advantage of that. You can’t get wins with only half the shots on net. We expect better. You should expect better. Play with heart and passion
What most keep forgetting is the two emergency goalies had a good size lead before they got on the ice. So the pros just had to play defence and get the puck to the other side of the ice. As often as they could. To keep shots on net down. But good for both those guys for keeping it together. To the pro teams they played on. But feel sorry for the teams that lost to them. One accountant and one zamboni driver. Lol.
Ayres came in with a two goal lead. The Canes got one more, and then Ayres gave up two goals. With the entire 3rd period remaining, he was only up by 1 goal.
I am and will always be a Leafs fan and no matter what some fucktards say they're a great team. However, I will give kudos to David Ayers and wish him all the best. Hats off to you sir.👏👏👏👏
