All the props to Patrick Devers, a 40+ second PR plus breaking a 42 year old NCAA record is incredible. The top 10 ran absolutely amazing times so Patrick is a very very very deserving winner.
@@mikemagyar3222, right. Mantz's best was 28:18.18 before this. He's a junior so we can expect him to do better next year. That was a heck of a race. I can hardly imagine running like that for almost 1/2 hour.
12:59 Commentator gushing about Kiptoo..."He's toying with them." Kiptoo immediately fades and the commentator never says a word about this. Brilliant. Regardless...great race!
Mantz’s attention was on Brandt being on his shoulder and so he shift to right side of the first lane since it’s kind of hard anyways to hug the first lane when you’re kicking. But Dever was at the right place and the right time and just has to hug the first lane and one more gear to take this one. So many moves, admirable finishes.
Congrats to Dever on running a masterful race and getting first! It should be mentioned that among the many reasons that set up the massive meet record from several athletes, the biggest one has to be Connor Mantz. He has never slowed down to run a race tactfully, and likely never will. He goes balls to the walls every moment, from the gun to the bell to the finish line, and if you want a chance at beating him you have no choice but to do the same.
@@badmusicchannel5519 na you never give up inside rail. it's still clean not your fault someone allowed themselves to be boxed in. Hold your position and charge make em work for it
What a great race. The cool weather led to the best 10K race in NCAA Championship history!!! Congratulations to Dever, Mantz, Nur, Brandt, Hamer, Masai, Hicks, Wildschutt, Mwaura, and Rodriguez for going under the old meet record of 28:01.30
So true! Rambling on about a coach while the best 10k in NCAA history unfolds. Interviewing a jumper in the key final minutes. Missing that Dever ran a perfect race, positioning himself in a stacked field and staying relaxed. They only noticed him with a few seconds to go.
@@badmusicchannel5519 that coach that were “rambling” about deserved to be talked about. He’s the best college coach of all time, any sport. He put Arkansas on the map in running, and in the process pushed every other college to be better.
I've always felt that the 10k is just too long a race to have as a track event. They should just have the 1500 and 5000. And then, outside of college, the marathon (on the road). I ran a 10k track race once, and it was the worst half hour+ of my life.
It's all about NCAA eligibility, not actual academic year. Katie Izzo at Arkansas is marked as a junior too but is a grad student there, it's not that uncommon.
In most Countries Universities are places of academic study. They DO NOT offer scholorships for students to play sport. The entire USA system is based on NCAA sports. So if foreign athletes want a "free" education, and they are very good runners, one way to get that is to accept a free ride scholorship at an American University. The US system is based around Colleges competing against each other and collectively. So the Colleges lure athletes from outside USA so they can get better points/results. It works well for sprinters BUT, sadly, destroys many middle and longer distance runners. Mainly by forcing them to over-race. Multiple event for sprinters are ok. But making middle/long distance runners compete in two of three events per meeting destroys most of them over 4 years. Also, making them compete both Indoors and Outdoors adds to the stress and over-racing. From the evidence we see, approx 90-95% of middle distance runners "retire" as soon as they finish College at around age 24 when they wouldn't hit their peak until late 20's/30. They get burnt out.
Kiptoo probably burned out from foolishly running 60 second first 400’s at the West preliminary meet and running the conference 5k/steeple/10k triple at very hard efforts.
This is where good coaching comes in. Rest is important. He’s probably going to prepare differently in the future. He can take credit for setting up the record pace though!
It's always funny when the leader pushes towards the outside lanes to prevent people passing on the last straightaway, then gets passed on the inside.. LOL
