43 - Checking Up on Replanted Trees & Clearing a Path to the Old Red Tractor!

About four months ago, in video 27, we replanted trees that were in the way of the excavation work behind the old and new barns. Not wanting to let them go to waste, we decided to relocate them higher uphill. The weather conditions weren't in our favor back then, with rain, wind, and more rain falling. After all that rain and saturated soil as a result, we had a few days of frost, so we were very curious to see how they would fare in spring. Now it's time to check up on them and see whether our work bore fruit-or leaves, in this case.
After some more rain (not kidding), Philippe continued working outside around the brambles where he ended last week. It started as a bramble break for easy maintenance, but it's turning into a bigger job. Might as well clear around the ditch passing between the two fields. Oh, and while we're at it, why not take out the old pig's fence too? Additionally, reopening a path to the old red tractor seems like a good idea since we'd like to pull it up once we start trying to get it running again! Clearing more brush and brambles is opening up new views, which is really nice. Join us again this week as we take you along the progress we're slowly making towards the red tractor.

I thoroughly enjoy your videos, and Odin is a treasure. I can't believe how much you have been able to achieve in such a short time, despite the unusual amount of rain France has experienced this year. If you are not already doing so, I would encourage you to watch The Dutch Farmer podcast series from start to finish. He followed the same path, failed, started a successful market farming venture, and is now building a new homestead in Portugal. He is an amazing teacher, and his podcasts are full of information I believe you would find valuable in your new endeavor. Best wishes!

I agree-I transplanted an avocado (that I grew from the seed) from a 5 gallon tub to an outside planter. It lost all leaves and took a long time to produce leaves again, doing so on a new stem/trunk. I was told that transplantation shock can cause things like that to happen. Be patient! Don’t yank anything out until you have given it plenty of time!

I think it is a shame so much flooding in so many different people's videos and later they have drought issues. I dont understand why the first thing that seems to matter in homesteading is controlling your water management for the entire year, If you have too much and not enough, that is really a blessing, because it gives you a chance to make it equal out for your needs by establishing ponds and redirecting the flow where you can
@DomaineSauvage
@DomaineSauvage 3 месяца назад
That is what we want to do with building the pond, so we can evacuate the water towards our pond and have reserve in drier periods. We have only been here a year so we are trying to solve the issues! Now it just floods everything and goes down the hill or damages the old barn.

+23:38 Coppice the Hazel? trees - remove the bent shoots, keep the straight ones for harvesting later. Or perhaps a living hedge - cut 80% through, low down and bend over and weave, through vertical stakes to make a natural, living fence. These are some of the old techniques we used in England, but I guess they occurred everywhere. The ditch is working well. Lovely spring in the bank. Create a succession of mini pools for watercress ? I'm interested how the water flows through your land

All that pig netting reminds me that pigs are best at ground clearing. They rootle, churn up the ground, and manure at the same time. We had an overgrown orchard at one time but a few pigs soon sorted that out and they enjoyed the windfalls. Mind you you are left with a lot of pig netting!

Perhaps you could get a herd of goats and sheep to keep the brambles and grass from coming back too fast. Sometimes a local farmer may “rent” his animals to get free pasture and help you clean the land at the same time. Good luck with your massive cleanup project. The farm is already so relieved that you are there to help it.

It was great to see how the trench you dug was working as planned, and that it was also being fed from the hillside. Makes me wonder if you could follow those tiny streams, lining those areas with river rock to make more permanent swales? (And nice landscaping). I really appreciate the approach you are taking to bring this property back to a healthy state!

Once the digging works are done we will be able to spot the sources in the hillside and maybe we can put sinks underneath them and divert the excess water around the barn to the pond.

What about pruning the tops when you so severely prune the roots?

In some contries there are places you can get free trees to plant for re-foresting.
@DomaineSauvage

We have enough small trees around the property we can replant, we might get some more fruit trees in the future.

If you were in America, you could probably hire a bobcat with a forestry clearing attachment on it. You would have the whole lot done in the day.😢
@janemaryagnes
@janemaryagnes 3 месяца назад
And 💥right there ….. the difference between America and Europe …… maybe because Europe took longer to grow …. we take things more slowly - and possibly more considerately ? btw we have hire companies here and even ….. bobcats (European version - we call them compact loaders).

For now it is just around the house, when i tackle the fields it will be with bigger machinery like the tractor. But the pieces of land i cleared now had to be done manually because of all the rubbish you couldn't see and we wanted to save certain trees and shrubs.

Very good progress by getting all of the old fencing off the land. I enjoy watching you cutting down the overgrowth. It's also wonderful that you help the established trees to breathe by removing all the vines. 😊

How long is it that the farm was productive? The brambles have taken over everything and you have had your work cut out for you to cut them back
@DomaineSauvage
@DomaineSauvage 3 месяца назад
The farm was productive from the 1800's or before until 1990-2000 i think, after that it was rented out and used or abused 😅😉
