We're Isis & Bertus. In the summer of 2023 we moved into a neglected farmhouse in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy. The last inhabitants left some 10 years ago, but large parts of the property have been empty for over 20 years.
The pigments and other ingredients for the natural paint we are making in this episode were purchased through www.ocres-de-f... (not sponsored) who we absolutely recommend if you were thinking of doing this yourself too.
Thank you for joining us on our adventure!

Reolink has been giving them away like candy. Laura Kampf did a video last week(she drew a little face on it, to give it some personality)😁 You can make them resemble WALL-E or Johnny 5. Very smart marketing move, why still make expensive commercials for media nobody watches anymore. I'm sure they're perfectly fine camera's, but i have nothing worth stealing.😉

Ciao Isis and Bertus, I never thought being in a rural area you would have a break-in, but it makes perfect sense, nobody expects it, so why not. The workshop looks amazing, I love the doors. Of course, you want second hand when your neighbor gives you doors, if they were new, they would lack the character, they are perfect. Well done. "Tramonto Bellissimo" Amore da N.Y.

I’m not surprised by the need for security cameras, even in your remote location. It is a sad reality of life in the 21st century. You two are probably popular topics amongst the “locals.”. You are “foreigners” who chose to live on the mountain, and had the resources to buy the property in the first place, which prompts certain assumptions. Also, the restoration work you are doing is so interesting - work which means valuable tools. Right here in the middle of America, a friend of mine who is a professional painter has always carried around most of his equipment in his pickup bed. He is now selling the truck because in the last year he has had paint sprayers and full paint drums (worth over $200 each) stolen right off his truck during quick stops! The fact that people are all around, and the thefts were in broad daylight are no longer deterrents. He is looking to buy a large panel van that he can lock up and keep equipment out of sight. Bravo for taking measures to protect yourselves and your property! ❤

We followed the recommended height instructions from the producer. the reasoning behing having them this height is that otherwise numberplates and face recognition aren't legible. we will at some point check with the local carabinieri as well for recommended heights and might make some adjustments in the future.

Security cameras' will also capture wildlife in your area. This can be informative and entertaining to see what wildlife visits your home during the day and night. Unfortunately theft can be an issue with rural properties when you are out, as there is less likelihood of neighbors seeing them in the act and reporting it to authorities. So windy... a shame you couldn't put in a simple wind turbine to harness that energy for electricity... Solar panels would also be helpful to provide lighting to outbuildings and exterior or even, emergency hydro back-up during prolonged outages.

That said, we already have loquat, mulberry, sour cherry, cherry plum, plum, pear and apple trees. All old varieties so they're not equally prolific every year, but still give us a bunch of fruit throughout the summer. We did a land tour video in February, the title is "40 acres of Italy".

Thanks for another great video :) Velluto is so comfortable around you….another milestone in him choosing to step onto your leg! Woohoo!!🎉 I am so very pleased that you were offered this sponsorship….. I have been quietly worrying about all of the tools shown on the videos……it looks like many years of collecting and expensive to replace. It just takes the one person watching with bad intent to see what you have and it’s not difficult to find your property……so the fantastic camera system really is needed. It appears even without your channel there are opportunistic thieves around the area :( The finished doors are stunning……they may have taken many hours of work, but, my goodness, they are a masterpiece of restoration! I love the final colour, it tones so well with the stone. You are both such talented people! Do mulberries taste similar to blackberries? Final question…..do you think the whole of the balcony concrete is reinforced with cane? ….and is that as weak as it seems to my untrained brain? Thanks again 😊
@storiesfromthecascina
@storiesfromthecascina 3 месяца назад
Much to reply to :-) 1) mulberry is somewhat similar to blackberry but it's sweeter. I really like them. 2) there is actual rebar in the balcony too, luckily! but large parts of the balcony are in bad condition and we'll need to replace the whole thing. a farm not too far from us has replaced their concrete balcony for chestnut boards and we really love that solution so likely will go the same route. 3) our tools are the main reason for getting the cameras.

After publish the video you should change the camera places. Camera and charging unit should not be so easy to spot. Also it’s reachable and can be destroyed. It’s better to put it closer to the roof.

Thank you for your concern! The optimal placement for security cameras depends on many factors. In Europe for domestic security cameras it is recommended to hang them between 2 and 3 metres. Any recordings heigher than 3m are considered useless. It's also obligatory by European privacy law to make clear that your property is being supervised.

After a lifetime of singing the nursery rhyme, Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush, I have never seen one before. They look kind of like blackberries in shape. I had no idea! It seems like the new workshop is smaller than the old one. I hope you had room for all that stuff! At first, I thought it was yours, and that you had brought it from Belgium and I was gobsmacked, lol. But then Bertus said that the previous owners left all kind of things behind, and it made more sense. Either way, the place is looking wonderful. You are making such great progress! (Also with kitty.

Publicly posting where your security cameras are doesn’t seem like a good idea. Nor does putting them within easy reach, a burglar can easily reach from the ground and cover or dismantle. Plus the lower to the ground the more readily they are spotted. It certainly is sad such measures need to be taken, but predators/thieves are everywhere. An inconvenient truth. Take care and stay safe. And I really enjoy your vlog, thank you for sharing your new lives in Italy.
@storiesfromthecascina

That's the hard part about being sponsored by a security camera brand, you kind of need to disclose where you're putting them :-) They are certainly not accessible from the ground. We are tall northerners and we need a ladder to reach them. They are at the recommended height (much higher and number plates become unlegible and face recognition useless) but we might tweak the positions a little still over the next weeks.

@@storiesfromthecascina oh ya, didn’t occur to me the sponsorship and requirements which go with this partnership. Now that you mention it… indeed tall people do have advantages versus vertically challenged, I’m tall by many standards as well so I have fun with people whom can’t reach an item in a store. Not rude, in good fun. Clever people can make use of a situation and you two strike me as intelligent and clever. I used to be in the security camera business and you cameras are placed to low. Anyone can interfere with them or steal them and you will have vegatation triggering false alrms - so that you will eventually get sick of them. Cameras need to be placed as high as possible to get the best field of view - to be hard to get at - and to allow for a wider field of view. This will also help then to distinguish between a tree moving or a person or car.

In Europe the advised height for domestic/private home security cameras is between 2.5 and 3 metres, which is what ours are at.

You should put your camera high enough to not be able to reach from the ground! If it is too low, they can steal it.

Hi Maria! Thank you for being concerned about the effectiveness of our setup. The cameras are not reachable from the ground - we are tall northerners and need a ladder to reach them :-) We might tweak the height a little over the next weeks but we need to find a balance between height and the cameras being able to register number plates etc. :-)

You might want to run some practice tests with those cameras. There is a lot of info online about what police needs on the footage the cameras generate. In practice home cameras are often easily noticeable, and within reach of the baddies in order for them to knock the cameras out. Also the cameras should be placed such that numberplates, faces, clothing, and other discerning details are best registered. That also precludes sufficient resolution in order to be able zoom in without losing detail. 1080p is the bare minimum. Higher resolution is worth the money. Baddies often drive to and fro a view times in order to spot an opportunity, and then investigate. So a simple test would be to put your car somewhat further back on the shoulder of the road. At night. And then see if the camera can pick up the number plate. And same while driving past at some speed. Perhaps also ask the local carabinieri too?
@storiesfromthecascina
@storiesfromthecascina 3 месяца назад
Some tests and talking to the local carabinieri is never a bad idea of course! The resolution of the argus 4 pro is something around 5120 by 1440p. They were positioned at the recommended height as well. Cameras are only one of the things you can do and by themselves they might not 100% prevent break-ins, but it's a start :-)
@_PJW_
@_PJW_ 3 месяца назад
@@storiesfromthecascina True. But police says that too often the footage is only good enough to helplessly watch it happening. While not good enough detailing for any investigative purposes. I did some digging and noticed Reolink has some nice pages about the differences in resolution. Reolink states "To prevent burglars from your house and to catch the criminals with clear evidence, you'd better install the 1440p security cameras." 1440p is 2K. But Reolink offers 4K security cameras (4096 x 2160), stating the Argus 4 Pro is 4K. Your clip also shows on the camera itself (5:33), so you're OK. 😊 Still, do some tests. *And PLEASE don't forget to change the security parameters on each camera, in order to prevent hacking. Major issue nowadays.*
