Well done on engine looks so tidy and spray foam and all finishing touches on blacking glad you are off for a break if anyone deserves it you do and still fitting in all the stuff with your children you are a ⭐️and should have a medal tc till next time the oldies 👍👋👍
Hehe, the engine is definitely the same colour as the digger! Looks nice though. Once you’ve finished the last of the demolition of the interior you’ll be on to the fun part, planning how to put it all back together! Can’t wait to see how it shapes up. Than k you for letting us share your journey every day. 😊
Wow one of those cans of spray foam covered a lot larger area than I thought it would, I figured you'd get one side done but you got 1 and half sides covered from a can. Boat is coming along nicely. 👍👍 You've got my interest piqued on the question of whether or not that bitumen paint will dry while submerged. 🤔 Usually paints like that need air so the volatile compounds they use as carriers can off gas. Now I'm curious lol. I think it may work but it might just take longer to for it to fully cure in the absence of air.
You might want to think what those bottom connections on the skin tanks need doing before the engine goes back in and blocks a lot of the access. A lot easier to put in a hose fitting without the engine in the way.
Just a thought James, I wrapped my steel water tank in YBS thermawrap foil insulation from screwfix to prevent condensation, not sure if it's needed on plastic but it is excellent stuff, easily applied with spray adhesive. It's so good I covered my ceiling with it to stop me cooking in the summer!!
As a Dunstable born lad I spent many hours fishing the grand Union around Tring, Leighton Buzzard and Pitstone, and often had drinks at the Plough Inn, at least If I'm remembering correctly it was the Plough, right on the towpath. Haven't seen the canal since moving away in the seventies, the Plough may not even be there anymore.
Hey James, I want to tell you that the wind screen and canopy you use is very smart. I have asked others on YT. Why they don’t use theirs. I have all always been told you can’t or the boat won’t handle correctly. After watching your videos, I don’t see you struggling, so I don’t feel quite so daff. Your daily vlogs have truly been a treat, I look forward to seeing it at the end of my day. Cheers from my side of the pond
surprisingly neat job with the spray foam. Maybe glue some support batons down at the front for the tank to sit on and then spray the rest of the floor area there with foam.
great vlog if i was you id floor paint the tank space then put the painted battons in the spay foam the base that means your tank will be well insulated my friend belt and braces and it wont cost you anything as you have the stuff already go for it lol ty look forward to next vlog
A light misting with water helps most spray foams to stick, James, believe it or not. I was fully expecting you to lean back onto that wet foam, so well done for not doing it. Have you actually got hot water on Sloe Patrol? All the best.
That original spray foam looks really thin. Have you thought about adding some mineral wool insulation on top of it before you put your ceiling or other panels back in?
Did you do the other Brazilian? I must have nodded off - it's late. On the blacking test, please check the water for traces of bitumen - that shouldn't happen if your theory is correct. The name is of course very personal, but I remember the days of naming Sloe Patrol and there was an alternative suggestion with Sloe - xxxxxx which I've forgotten and can't now research by back-viewing. Something like "Sloe Venture", idk. It's late and I want to go to bed because there's a longish journey to the Bavarian Weald (130 km) waiting for me in the morning. But it would be nice to keep the "Sloe-" theme up. C ya Sunday pm.
Who else shouted " don't touch it ! " as it slumped I highly recommend gloves and eye protection when using foam and old clothes I got some on an expensive top so it was relegated to work wear the stain was still there two years later when I binned it
Before you do the inside layout... heres something ive been thinking about narrowboat floor insulation I really dont get 100%.... you see as its usefull enough to havbe stone under the floor to balast/balancing the boat,- thats all nice and dandy and functional... what I dont get is that stones are in fact great thermal batteries and like done on most narrow boats: exposing them directly to the hull/buttom of the ship cools them off,- heating you boat then heats them up... but why on earth not insulate under the stones reducing the cooling contra the heating storage ??? as long you dont insulate the floor battens too much: they need to "breathe" or they will roth if any moisture ... its just a thought that I think seems more inteligent!!! 🙂
I’ve thought the same. The baseplate rots from the inside mostly but if it was fully spray foamed then it would prevent the rust like the rest of the superstructure. It would also have all the thermal benefits you mention. I guess putting ballast on top might be weird but the new way these days is to have a twenty mm baseplate to add the weight and do away with the ballast altogether
By the twinkle in your eye, I'm thinking you already have an idea for a name. Still wondering about color scheme, I must admit. It was breathtaking how clean it looked when you opened the engine bay. Such good work, James! Leigh😊
More good work done, James I thought a mask is needed for the sprayfoaming or is it non toxic? Maybe ask your children for suggestions on a new name for boat. Maybe something using the first letter of each childs name. ❤
You certainly are working very hard to make Project 58 a wonderful boat. I have a suggestion for her name. The word Endeavour came to mind. "Endeavour the Sovereign of Canals" is just a thought. What ever you name her I'm sure it will be fitting of the fine boat she will be. God bless.
Random question James--you mentioned that you received a notice that you had to move Sloe Patrol because you'd been moored in one place for more than the allowed time. How do "the authorities" know that? Are the boats fitted with GPS locators or is there a canal police force wandering up and down the towpath writing parking tickets?? (DKNY--posh!)
I'd like to know what he's using too - we've been trying to find some closed-cell foam to finish off the "professional" spray-foam job done on our narrowboat, and have so far failed in the UK. (Dot)
Hi, I used this spray foam in the eves of my house to seal inbetween the rigid foam insulation. Very successful however like James i didnt read the can and the small print. It says use in a well ventilated area or wear a suitable mask. This expanding foam can cause CANCER it has been passed by health and safety as it only gives off very low levels of benzine based chemicals. I used it over a 6 month period, most days and i used about 36 cans. The loft was ventilated but i was like James very close to the application point. I NOW HAVE LEUKEMIA. i was perfectly fit and healthy before this. This is my only comment on youtube and i only make it as i suspect James will be doing more and i couldnt sit and watch someone make a life changing mistake. My foam was a different make and maybe a different chemical make up but i doubt it.
Sh1t mate I am so sorry to hear that. I’m not going to be doing much more luckily but if I ever do I’ll remember your story. Thanks for telling me - I wish you very very well my friend James
You probably tried to view it just after James has uploaded it. RU-vid renders a low res SD version first, and then the HD versions. It can take from a few mins to an hour to be fully available in HD, depending on the video length. It's available up to full 2160p now.
I was going to mention a few days ago that engine paint looks more like JCB yellow. For a boat name, how about "Purgatory" "a place or state of suffering inhabited by the souls of sinners who are expiating their sins before going to heaven"
Can you explain why it's interesting to look at a man painting ... painting ... painting? Maybe it would be just as interesting if you made a video that just shows the paint drying? Strange!
