in this video i demonstrated How to Discharge High Voltage Capacitor in SMPS. because in some circuits the smoothing capacitor / bulk capacitor / main dc capacitor holds the charge, even the the circuit is disconnected from the line. if for test purpose we want to touch the circuit or we want to replace some component, it becomes very dangerous and it may cause severe electric shock

I was just looking for designs for this device and there you are in my subscriptions; perfect timing! Your design is unique in that it allows the voltage to be conveniently observed with a multimeter. You have me thinking on clever designs for my build. I have an extra volt meter that is not so valuable. I think that I will make it a dedicated capacitor discharger, by placing the resistor across the probe pins, on the PCB. That will make for a neat, professional package. I am excited! Thank you for the inspiration!

@@HaseebElectronics I have already completed the project. It was very simple to do. I posted it on the EEVBlog forum. I titled the thread "Repurposed Old Multimeter = DIY Capacitor Discharger With Readout - Project." You can search for it by this title. I would have posted the link, but RU-vid does not allow users to post links. I hope you will look at the thread. Feel free to copy the link and post it here.

Thank you, you explain this very well. I got a small shock from a small capacitor in a camera once. I am going to replace some relays in a hi-fi amplifier soon that has large capacitors. I am definitely going to take your advice and check the voltage and discharge the largest capacitors before working on the board 👍

Just wanna add something. If you use Fluke Meter, Testing Charged Capacitors directly using capacitance test, the tester will display diSC indicating the multimeter is discharging the capacitor before it measures the capacitance. Fluke 87V has this feature and been using every time I encounter a capacitor that might be charged.
@HaseebElectronics
@HaseebElectronics 2 года назад
really a valuable hidden feature. i was unaware by this information. i always do this practice by discharging the capacitor , then checking the voltage and then check capacitance i am thankful

Can i use a light bulb to discharge na capacitor?
@sunilkarki5738
@sunilkarki5738 3 года назад
dear haseeb sir once my professor told you can discharge capacitor in diode mode is it safe? the easiest way is bulb they say. please guide me .
@HaseebElectronics
@HaseebElectronics 3 года назад
in diode mode NEVER do it. because in diode mode you are using internal battery of the multimter. it can explode the battery or it will damage the DVM. tingston lamp is also some useful idea, but a large value capacitor (charged at 400 VDC can bast the tingston lamp. as the lamps are just 220 VAC RMS. so surely the bulb will not work much longer. but as you told that your professor advised like this, please confirm again

Yes, it's bleed resistor, but also equilizing resistor, during normal PSU operation. Over time, voltages across 2 capacitors can differ by few volts, due to inperfection and initial difference in capacitance, and many other factors. These 2 caps don't age exactly the same way. I've used MATLAB to optimize between time to charge and discharge power. I've found it's fine for 6kohm resistors for continous discharge of 15 seconds, or less.

special thanks sir that is also a very useful solution, it provides 400-500 mAmp discharge rate. but when dealing with high voltage above 300 this lamp provides surge in discharge and during discharging high capacitance valued capacitors, the tingston lamp burns out. because high voltage and current causes to exceed its power rating, (while discharging above 1 farad capacitor it is unsafe) so it is much safe to discharge at slow discharging current
