437. Functional Fluid Art: Avoiding The “Drano Effect” With Pre-Cut Clocks!

Hi all! This is a rather long video and I debating cutting parts, but for those who want to make functional art I thought the hacks contained herein might be useful; plus there's a cameo of Finn! : )). I am chatty Kathy though so you are forewarned LOL!! Anyway, I found these almost 12" clocks at Ikea; and decided they would be perfect for testing the drying conditions in the new studio.
In this video, I'm going to demonstrate how to avoid the "Drano Effect" when pouring on functional art items with cut-outs (such as numbers on a clock). The "Drano Effect" is when the liquid paint flows through the cut-out or holes in your substrate, often resulting in a less-than-perfect product.
This video is perfect for anyone who wants to learn how to make beautiful functional art!
I made a homemade pouring medium (see recipe below) and I did simple flip cups to make functional art and I am super happy with how they turned out! Don't be afraid of silicone! It's easy to clean and adding a barrier coat between the paint and resin will ensure a successful topcoat on the first try! Let me know if you have any questions--I'll be teaching a Flip It, Lip It, and Drag class at the Fluid Art Boutique April 1-3, 2023, in Santa Fe, NM if you'd like to check it out! https//:www.FluidArtBoutique.com

The colours in the second clock worked really well, with how the orange made lacing contrasted with the blue & turquiose. It's amazing how different two pours with the same colours can be.

I absolutely love this! I have to admit, then I was not a fan until just before the end. When you took that lower orange off and made it all dark blue at the bottom (or top) separating the orange the gray and the dark blue into their own areas, I absolutely fell in love! I know there’s a lot of cells but that’s what brings the colours, that are so separate, together into a cohesive work of art.

Yes! I learn more from the bloopers than from anything else. Maybe that's because I'm so bloopy, but I think it's because the cause-and-effect and fixes wise me up to how to think better as I approach a medium or a project. THANK YOU, KAREN - and congrats on the studio!

Hi Karen, great first studio pour! Maybe with the numbers with the holes in you could fill up with the same colour you paint the hands, tape them up again and get an eye dropper or something with a thin/narrow nozzle to drop in the paint, although I have found it doesn't matter how dry or wet the paint is when you take the tape off it will always take some paint with it. I love the orange cells on the green at the top of clock 2. 🧡💛💚💙

So happy to see your first video and it all worked out so well. AND another tip: The indirect lighting. I can't do it, but it really sounds like a perfect idea. I use the indirect fan method when it''s really hot and that works well without disturbing my painting.. Love the clocks, and I liked the idea of no numbers for the same reason. Colors are beautiful and I'm going to try that combo, but not on a clock. Good luck as you break in you new studio.♥♥♥

Thank you so much for sharing all the challenges with the new studio. They gave me such a good chuckle as I lie in bed with Covid unable to paint! And love seeing your fun tape kluges underneath the clock! I kept thinking, put a popsicle stick there to hold onto, Karen! Seriously, though, all your day 1 funnies is just like what I've been going through breaking in my Fla. studio. My Silver Spring one was so smooth. But down here, I've had every disaster under the sun. Leveling, re-leveling and then a table not being leveled and art disasters. Resin freezing and becoming sticky messes and having to recover from it. Humidity and temperature changes. Cracks when drying when that never used to happen up north. Mold growing in leftover paints. Having to clean up with NO SINK! Having to go and buy the long extension cord (there's a great one with multiple plugs at various locations). I've learned a TON in the process. Feel like I should start a video series on fluid paint disasters in the Fla art studio and how to recover from them at this point!

Oh, Karen, I think they are BOTH gorgeous. Sorry, but I think the white hands on the really busy second one works (with beachy colors!) I'd be likely to do bright orange on the first one too. Although, I like the 2 color idea on the hands. Maybe a yellow and orange? I'm anxious to see if you add lights to the back of one of these, or perhaps a totally different one in the future. The clocks ARE a WIN, WIN!! xo

2 reasons: if I decide to varnish instead it allows me to remove the varnish at a later date without harming the painting; and if I decide to resin it’s a guarantee that I won’t hit any silicone that I may have missed while cleaning.

Instead of the tape, could you use a round or lid or something to cover the back? (so when you're done, you'd lift the painting off the lower layer) I mean, you could even just place it straight on your shower cap on the spinner, and you'd probably get the effect I'm thinking of. Anyways, just a suggestion, hope it'll help or inspire 😊
@WaterfallAcrylics

I thought of the shower cap but realized the weight of the paint would cause it to droop and make even more paint run down the holes and cause the drano effect I was avoiding.
