Today on Kentucky Ballistics we shoot 48 inches of 10% ballistics gel with a 44 Magnum and a 454 Casull. We use the same type of bullet and the same bullet weight for both calibers. We also use a 2 ½ inch barrel and a 9 ½ barrel for each caliber, so we can see the difference in penetration when using a shorter or longer barrel. I hope you enjoy the video and thanks for watching!
Ammunition used in today’s video.

Thank you for all of your responses! I think it is pretty funny that a lot of people say that they don't like Glock, but still own one. I like Glock and I own several. My favorite Glock is the model 20. My favorite Glock for conceal carry would have to be the model 19.

I own 6 Glocks and I've never regretted purchasing any of them, 19, 26, 27, 29, 30, and 30S. Have you tried out a Glock 30S? If you haven't you should, or at least get your hands on one to see how it feels in your hand.

My favorite Glock is any Glock in 45 GAP because it tells all those Glock Fanboys that there is a difference between 9mm and 45 auto as 45 GAP is essentially a 45 auto that can fit into a G19 sized frame. Basically the ammo discussion of enhanced 9mm rounds being "comparable" in some way to 45 auto started shortly after the introduction of the Winchester Black Talons in an era that was the early 1990's when bullet technology had significantly increased. Then nearly a decade later Glock made their own round that wouldn't make much sense if there wasn't a difference in performance between the 9mm and 45 auto.... well unless Glock Fanboys are willing to admit Glock can't competently conduct their own research and development in which case I might have to agree with them as Glocks still come with plastic sights after 5 generations and what might just happen to be a renamed barrell.... and I can't wait for nutnfancy to review the Gen 5 so I can say "I told you so" ... yeah. The 45 GAP is definitely my favorite Glock of all time. It's just too bad people like James Yeager make clickbait about 40S&W to avoid talking about 45 GAP entirely. That's just a form of toxic manipulation if you ask me.

Kentucky Ballistics what’s funnier is I don’t like glocks at all.. carry a g19 most days though lol.. wanted something reliable with any ammo with vast aftermarket for holsters etc.. quality accessories are also cheaper then most other options like my PPQ which is my preferred go to. I also don’t like getting other selections dirty and sweaty daily..

@jskypercussion
@jskypercussion 2 года назад
@@357Franknitty The felt recoil of the 44 magnum with a max load, is actually close to a 454. The felt recoil of a 400 grain 454 Double Tap round is the the most powerful felt energy of recoil of any pistol cartridge. The 44 actually comes in second. The 500 S&W falls short in the recoil department even though it is a much bigger cartridge. From my personal experience, the 44 mag max load is painful in the palm of the hand. The 454 is painful in the carpals or the knuckles of the hand. After so many rounds, both calibers give the hands minor bruises in the different areas I mentioned. But I absolutely love both of them equally. If you like pain and power, I highly recommend both of them. Now obviously if you buy general range ammo for both these calibers, these recoils are not that bad, but if you want to feel them at their full potential, buy the max loads and +p+'s. You will not be disappointed with the pain.

I think the reason the 454 out of the 460 didn't have as good of penetration as the 44 is because of the space between the bullet and the end of the cylinder, because the 460 round is longer than the 454, so I think a lot of pressure may be escaping around the bullet before it gets into the barrel causing it to not preform as well as it should have. I could be completely wrong, it could be the extra 2 inches of barrel. Either way it would be cool to see a chronograph test against a 454 shot out of a 460 vs shot out of a dedicated 454 with the same barrel length.
@mfallen6894
@mfallen6894 2 года назад
Nah, it is differences in sectional density. The .454/.460 has a .452in bullet and at 300gr it has a an SD of .210, which is pretty low. The .44mag, with a diameter of .429 has an SD of .233 at 300gr, an acceptable SD for most game. Doesn't seem like a lot but when the minimum SD for a projectile for medium game like deer is usually considered .22x for sufficient penetration, that .023 difference can greatly effect penetration when using different calibers of the same mass. When testing penetration between cartridges that are fairly close in energy/velocity running the same projectile construction (.44 might pale to a .454 in the handgun world, but both are weak compared to rifle calibers so they really aren't too far apart) the best procedure is to match SD values for the projectiles in each caliber. In this case a 325gr would probably equal the .44mag. It would have an SD of .227, so the extra velocity of the .454 would put them neck and neck. A 335gr (.234 SD) or 350gr (.245 SD) would really start to pull away and show greater penetration than the .44. When comparing any caliber against another in terms of terminal ballistics, sectional density is by far the most important metric. Mass, muzzle energy, and velocity should compared after determining projectiles of similar SD. Things like BC, which is greatly overhyped to sell rifles/specific calibers, is almost entirely useless before getting out past 200-300yd, and even then BC has no bearing on terminal performance; a higher BC just helps retain velocity and energy, that's the only way it's relevant to the long-range hunter. I know you didn't mention BC, but I get so sick of hearing about it that I had to mention it, lol.

The high pressure 454 Casull in the long barrel slows down faster due to expansion. The shorte barrel has less velocity so the bullet expands less and penetrates deeper.
@jpannellmd
@jpannellmd Год назад
No…. He used a 460 to shoot the 454. The cylinder cone is not opposed properly to the end of the case allowing a small amount of gas to escape from the rear of the cylinder. With lower pressure rounds like a 38 spec fired from a 357, this is less of a problem. IMO the testing of the 454 with the 460 is invalid. Get a proper 454 with a longer barrel and I’ll believe it.

My favorite Glock is the Model 21. When I started out in law enforcement it was during the time when most LEO's carried a 9mm or a .45acp 1911. The .40 S&W was only out a short time and most folks just didn't know about it or want to carry it. This was a few years following the infamous FBI Miami shootout and all the testing that followed showing the 9mm was basically ineffective. I would guess 90-95% of LEO's carrying 9mm at that point ditched them for either a .40S&W or the .45acp. This coincided with the release of the Glock which seemed to immediately find favor with police officers around the country. I loved my S&W Model 59 "Wonder Nine" but surviving a gunfight was far more important to me. Our state troopers had transitioned to the Glock 22 .40 S&W which is where I saw my first Glock. I was visiting with a friend who was a state trooper and he told me all about the Glocks. I waited a little while but quickly decided to retire the S&W 59 and get a Glock 21. Not the prettiest or most ergonomic but they are insanely reliable, very accurate and generally perform perfectly. I still own one today and wouldn't go without one. Today's 9mm is a much better cartridge than it was back then but I still prefer my Glocks in .45 acp.. Maybe one of these days I'll get a G20 upper for it and try my hand at 10mm. I think it's the only mainstream handgun caliber I don't have. As far as the video goes I found it pretty interesting. I've had people tell me my S&W 629 V-Comp's 4" barrel really neuters the .44 magnum's performance but your video (among others I've seen) proves that shorter barrel .44 magnum's can still run with the long dogs. Personally I think that unless you are using it specifically for hunting a 4-5" barrel .44 magnum is the ideal length hands down.

Although you can shoot the 454 out of the S&W 460, the 454 is considerably shorter than the 460 cartridge. Therefore, you are losing some velocity while the bullet rattles through the long chamber before it gets to the forcing cone.
@conanlive3784
@conanlive3784 2 года назад
Why are you losing velocity on the .454? The powder continues to burn while the bullet is making it's way through the chamber, forcing cone, and the barrel. I would think the slightly longer travel distance would help it burn more powder and go slightly faster. I'm no ballistics expert, though......
@jeffreylocke8808
@jeffreylocke8808 3 года назад
The higher velocity deforms the bullet more causing a loss of penetration ability. The 44 magnum from the longer barrel penetrated deepest. Because a 300 grain 44 caliber bullet has a higher sectional density than a 45 caliber 300 grain bullet it penetrated deeper...

Robert explain the decrease in velocity. The 454 should have easily 50% more energy than a 44 magnum. I also see the neck of the 454 is actually bigger than the 460 S & W
@Robert-qm7yi
@Robert-qm7yi 6 лет назад
@@michaelrooney3626 By the numbers .454 does have more energy. But energy is not the only variable in penetration. Energy, velocity, sectional density, and bullet design all play a big part in penetration. All I can see that's significantly different is 44 mag is .43 caliber and .454 is .454, given similar weights that means 44 mag has a longer bullet and more sectional density
@trashrelocationengineer6472

Great test. Unfortunately, it pits hunting revolvers against bear medicine revolvers and uses hunting bullets that are limited to the 44’s capacity. The gel material absorbing and its lightness is moving, so the imparted energy isn’t being observed. More so, hunting bullets expand more with more velocity, creating more resistance once inside. Since hydrostatic shock doesn’t happen at these velocities, expansion and penetration are your primary means of effectiveness. Where the 454 shines over the 44 is hard cast bear medicine. It can go heavier and faster. Some may argue the significance of the amount or the manageability of the platform, but its still a fact. A good follow up to this experiment would be the heaviest/fastest hard cast you can manage in a 44 vs the heaviest/fastest hard cast you can manage in a 454. I believe the outcome will show there’s no benefit to 454 for hunting, but the 454 is what you want for SD against bruins.
@edwardcollier5949
@edwardcollier5949 4 месяца назад
You are factually wrong. 454 makes the same energy at 100 yards as 44 does at the muzzle in a long barrel and, as such, shoots much flatter and more accurately with more penetration and expansion at any given range. 454 is confirmed to have dropped the big 5+ hippo in Africa.
@trashrelocationengineer6472
@trashrelocationengineer6472 4 месяца назад
@edwardcollier5949: You may not agree with my opinion, but please expand on specifically what was “Factually wrong”. Owning a Rossi 92 for both cartridges, I can assure you the 454 provides no practical gains in realistic HUNTING scenarios, regardless of the details of whatever arbitrary hippo kills you may have come across. Has a .22 Short ever killed a hippo? According to Peter Hathaway Capstick, the .22 Short RAPIDLY dispatched elephants multiple times. Is a .22 Short now superior to the .44 Magnum, as well? Let’s dispose of the internet killing tales and address the practical hunting vs bear defense point I was making. I can guarantee you that you’ve never heard someone say “I’d have taken the shot on that deer, bear, elk, etc. if I had a 454 Casull, but I only had a .44 Magnum.”. Below 2000fps, there’s no effective hydrostatic shock. In hunting with cartridges of these speeds, energy that does anything beyond full penetration hasn’t been proven to be more effective (There’s your fact). Accurately hitting the vitals and penetrating them with a projectile possessing significant cross section are the only things that are actually known to matter. (another fact). That applies from 125gr broadhead traveling at 260fps to a 360gr .460 S&W hollow point moving at 1400fps. That is how I arrive at the OPINION that the 454’s realistic value is certain situations (convenience vs the safety of a 12ga) regarding bear defense. Unlike hunting, the most realistic self-defense shot will be head on, (vs an easier penetrated ribcage). Thick skull and dense muscle. Coastal black bear can get north of 500lbs and 999 out of 1000 will run from you. Bear #1000 is where that added energy of the 454 provides the comforting thought of sinking a heavy, hard cast projo deeper than the .44 Magnum. Good luck with your 454 Casull hippo hunt.

I think the reason the 454 shot from the longer barrel didn't penetrate deeper was because the chamber in that gun is actually cut for 460. The step at the end of the case is cut deeper for 460 and leaves a small gap that the 454 bullet has to jump. This also allows some gas to escape. The same thing happens when firing 38 specials from a 357 max or 38 short from a 357 mag. The 454 fired from an actual 8 inch 454 gun would have penetrated deeper than the 44mag. 44 mag is still better all aroundthan 454cas. Nearly the same performance for less than half the cost. Plus on most guns you get a full 6 shots instead of 5 on most 454s.

Not really...it expended further and could transfer more energy that way into the target, that's why it stopped earlier. Just compare the first impact. And you want your energy to go in to the target and not in the surface behind it. That's why HP are hard to compare on distance (it's rather a measurement how much energy is still there to harm bystanders), you compare it in energy transfer . FMJ would give totally other results

Not really. He was using hollow points, which are designed to create immediate severe trauma upon impact, not penetration. Even without comparing ballistics, you can see the increased energy and violence of the .454 over the .44 mag. This energy is why the .454 mushroom is larger, is of lower weight and less penetration for identical 300 grain bullets. By design, the hollow point distributes the energy immediately upon impact, which you see in the video with the increased violence of the ballistics gel's movement upon impact, including the table underneath. Clearly the .454 is far more powerful. If you are looking for penetration, then put a flat nose hard cast bullet in there and the .454 will destroy the .44 mag as well. So, the .44 mag having more penetration here is a result of less energy displacement at impact. The bullet retains more weight, remains smaller in diameter, does not slow down as rapidly, hence penetrating more. That's actually a bad thing.

Great idea, my friend. Thank you for doing this. But you really should have used 4 different sets of gel. The gel becomes compromised with every shot, and the possibility of any round tracking a previous path at any point changes the dynamics with less resistance, as you saw. Keep us posted!

I don't own any stock glocks anymore. I used to have the 19, 26, 22, 23, 27, 20, and 29, in various generations. Now I have Polymer 80 frames in the following configurations, only glock parts are OEM internals. 19/23 (2), 26/27 (1, the frame takes 26 and 27 uppers and mags), also have their hybrid frame that uses 17/22 slides on a 19/23 height frame. 2 of those. My baby though is the pf45 frame with Lonewolf 20 upper, Stormlake 6" barrel. It is such an improvement over the gen3/4 20 frame! 10mm, and it is my light duty woods gun. Carry it mostly while gold panning and dredging all over Idaho, montana and washington.

I've reloaded for .44 Magnum for over 30-years...and contrary to all the emotional 'my .454 can out-perform your .44 Magnum', in reality, I've ALWAYS been able to load a 300-grain Speer (pn 4463) to 1450-fps in a Ruger Super Redhawk, with enough performance that it was IDENTICAL to the .454 Casull. Now, that said...if I were to go out and buy a new pistol today...I'd focus solely on the .500 S&W Magnum, as it's performance is much closer to the .45-70 rifle round...and neither the .44 Magnum nor the .454 Casull can begin to compare to that .500 Magnum's performance.

454 casull had higher velocity (can open hollow points faster ) and a larger surface area . Those two factors explain why it had a bit less penetration even though it was the more powerful round . This means it also dumped its energy better into the target.

The 300 grain bullet in .429 caliber is going to have greater sectional density than a 300 grain bullet in .454 caliber. It will achieve greater penetration because of that.

BFerry10 That is right. I would expect the shorter, fatter .45 to have a little more dramatic effect on the gel though, especially at .454 velocity. Super slo-mo of the temporary cavity would be interesting.
@ModernWarflare
@ModernWarflare 6 лет назад
Dramatic effect on the gel in completely irrelevant imo. The goal is to reach vitals and they both had about the same penetration. After watching this video I'm convinced that anything bigger than a .44 Magnum is pointless. I think gun companies realized that they were losing millions of dollars because big bore revolver guys had no reason to buy anything else. They release a few new calibers and everyone goes running to the store to spend crazy money on a gun that's no more effective than the one they already owned. The .44 Magnum was getting the job done for over 20 years but suddenly we need bigger and better? Give me a break.
@Sherman62
@Sherman62 6 лет назад
Probably a degree of truth in that but if you just want to poke a deep hole there are much smaller packages that will do it using FMJ. When the target becomes big and tough enough, the only terminal performance you can afford to prioritize is penetration because you need A LOT. For smaller critters though, I believe "dramatic effect" has the potential to put them down quicker. A balance of penetration and drama is probably best for thin skinned big game.
@ModernWarflare
@ModernWarflare 6 лет назад
Yeah, if we're talking varmints I'll use v max bullets and make them explode. I was specifically talking about grizzly defense. To each their own. I guess it would be cool having a .454 Casull because at least you can also fire .45 LC. I forgot about that until just now.
@High_Desert_Tanner
@High_Desert_Tanner 3 года назад
Penetration is nearly entirely dependent on sectional density. Second would be bullet construction. The more a bullet deforms, the less it will penetrate. Using the same weight of bullets gave the 44 a distinct advantage. A 300gr bullet coming out of a 454 will be moving much faster AND have less sectional density than a 300gr bullet from a 44. Velocity is usually counterproductive to penetration. You want a big, heavy bullet moving slower for maximum penetration. I'd like to see the same test done with the heaviest readily available bullets for each caliber.
@nickleback3695
