Personally one of the biggest reasons to hang onto the 44 is convenience if you do happen to leave ammo at home your hunt is not lost. Off the shelf 45 Colt is somewhat anemic compared to Ruger loads and asking for 41 mag is met with blank stares. Since you are also fully vested in 44 mag I would hesitate to divest myself of it as it takes much time procuring supplies and working loads up.

@@plowboysghostnot to kick a dead horse, but of those three calibers, 44 mag ammo off the shelf is not only still decent, but sometimes easier to find components and if a shortage occurs 44 mag will come back before the other 2.

My first Revolver was a ruger super Blackhawk 5.5" in 44 mag. Converted it into a bisley later on. 44 is great for the large variety of reloading options and the ability to go from super easy plinking rounds to unholy demon vanquishers thatll wipe your target from the cosmos. Also its more common in the stores, both in ammunition and parts for guns. I love my super redhawk. But it took forever to find some grips that didnt cut directly in my nerve injury. Bottom line is use what works for you. Thats the joy of having so many calibers to pick from.

I have unloaded my 44 mag recently to focus more on the 41 magnums. I only had a single 44 mag Redhawk and relatively little ammo. Meanwhile I have a new model Blackhawk, a charter arms 41 mag pug and a Henry rifle all in 41. So it was the right call for me. For all the reasons you mentioned and more. But you are much more invested, so I’d give it some time and thought.

Preachin' to the chore, plowboy. I have Blackhawk .45 with a 5 1/2 inch barrel and a Rossi lever action with a 20 inch barrel. I'm not pushing my hand loads quite as much as you are, but I''m still getting near 1100 fps form my 300 grain bullets. I see no need in owning a .44 mag. I get a bigger hole and less recoil. I will be taking my Blackhawk on a trout fishing trip to Montana this summer. I had the most scary experience of my life while fishing in Wyoming several years ago. I was across the river from my car. The nearest bridge was 1/2 mile upstream or a 1/2 mile downstream. I came across grizzly tracks in the sand. Water was still seeping into the tracks. All I had was a 5 weight fly rod. Standing there with all the hairs on the back of my neck standing straight up, I knew I needed a plan. I had to know where the bear was heading. I felt it would be better for me to find the bear than for the bear to find me. I cautiously tracked him/her for about a 100 yards through stand soil. He/She headed away from the river, up dry wash. I headed back downstream to bridge, cross on the bridge and headed to my car. That will never happen to me again. Not that I would have pushed the bear, but I never want to have that feeling of helplessness, again.

Tough choices. I have gone through a "streamlining" with my revolvers. I got rid of 45 colt, 45 acp, 44wcf and 41 magnum. I replaced them with more 44 magnum and 357 magnum. It's been much easier to keep 1 target load, one mid range carry load and one Michigan grizzly load in each caliber. Also easier to keep up with components. Keep ciphering, you'll figure it out.

You and I, both. .41 Magnum is a GREAT cartridge. I'm on round 60 or so yesterday, shooting this more expensive, 5-lb., scoped DA Redhawk from a rest at 50 yards, when it enters my thinking that I could have put a much lighter, less expensive, 2x fixed power scope on a much lighter, less expensive Blackhawk...since I'm only using 2X-3X of my 2-7 power scope, and I'm cocking the hammer on this double action for every shot, anyway. Then cartridge choice and redundancy entered my thinking and I started asking "why"...

That is exactly the conversation I had with a friend yesterday. As stated below, a fellow would have better luck being able to pick up a wider variety of ammo with a 44 than a 45 or 41 but I always load my own and when travelling, always have plenty. So I am seriously thinking of going solely with 45. At the moment, I only have one 44 (a 629 5" Classic) and many 45's both in revolver and lever gun.

First off, those Black Hawk grips on the 41 magnum are beautiful. I’ll tell you what, I sold my .44 magnum. I only shoot and buy pistols chambered in 45 automatic and 45 Colt. This is purely an act of logistics,(cost and simplicity). I am set up to reload both calibers, and if I want to stock up on factory ammunition, I only have 2 calibers to worry about. I like to keep it as simple as possible. I’d love to own every handgun out there. But having to buy and setup for 44 magnum, 357 magnum, 45 Colt, 45 automatic, 9mm, etc, that is just a logistical nightmare.

My opinion, for what it's worth, I never found any use for the 44 magnum that I couldn't do just as well with my 41 mag. or my 45 Colt. Like everyone into revolvers, I had to have a dirty harry gun, and I bought the mod. 29, 6 1/2-inch barreled revolver and spent the afternoon with it. Well, the revolver took its toll on my index fingers knuckle twice, it happens, the next time I took the big gun out, I got a nick in my thumb, 3rd time I took the revolver out, my right palm had a little bruise on it. And then I had another problem, I started to have a flinch when shooting the thing. Then the next time I took it out, I traded it off. My conclusion is this, why in the world would I want to take something I enjoy so much and turn it into something I don't. I simply didn't enjoy shooting the 44 mag. And if yins think I'm a sissy for it, so be it. For some, it's just fine, for others the configuration is just no fun.

I get that 100%. To me, .41 Mag is my .357 Mag for anything I would use .357 Mag for on 2 or 4 legs, but better. It's better than .44 Magnum for 2 legged threats (IMO) and can take care of 95% of what .44 Magnum can on 4 legs. .45 Colt can deal with 2 legged threats and can equal ANYthing .44 Magnum can on 4 legged issues but do it with less pressure and drama than .429 Magnum.

This south Ga.boy hears you and I too have tried to make these same arguments. I have a Model 57-1 and Rugers in 45 Colt. I love them. I also have several.44s (Smiths and Rugers). I thought about one time doing what you are thinking. I went down to 1 44 and regretted it. Spent time and money buying back my regrets. While I think the 41 is one of the most versatile and effective calibers, and you can do a heck of a lot with a 45 Colt, I still know that when I pick up one of my 629s or my Redhawk, it is going to do the job with hand loads or factory. Options are great to have. and a quote I heard one time says, "It is easy to make good decisions when there are no bad options."

I understand how you feel. The first pistol I ever shot was a S&W 629 44 Magnum. I rented it at a range and used there reloads which were actually loaded closer to 44 special power levels. I loved it at the time. Years later when I actually bought my first handgun, I decidedl I preferred Single action over Dbl action and got one in 45 colt. It felt just like the 44 I shot recoil wise. Then I shot a buddy’s mint condition 1985 S&W 629 with full power loads and I was surprised at how strong it was. I thought to myself; I don’t see the reason for this level of power in a handgun. Like you say: 45 Colt will handle anything in North America if you load it to Heavy standard pressure or beyond. It all depends on what makes you feel good carrying and shooting. For me , nothing feels as good as a single action. Colt style is my favorite with the Remington 1890. 5.5” being second. I also have a variety of calibers for these. I have a Uberti in 45 colt, 44 WCF , and 38 WCF. I haven’t fired the 38 yet, but with full power loads should be close to 10mm. The 44 is my favorite so far. Has a bit more punch than 45 . In between 44 special and 44 Magnum which for me is the sweet spot. It’s your calll, but I think you are right about the 41 Magnum doing what ever the 44 Magnum can do. I would maybe keep the older RedHawk for sentimental reasons . Take care.

At one time in my life about 20 years ago I was trying to optimize 41, 44, and 45 in my life for defensive carry and big game hunting. As a boolit caster and reloader ( and want to be scientist) it was a consuming passion to determine your exact current question. The obvious answer is that all three calibers are very versatile and all three work great and all will take care of all you ask of them. Spend a afternoon with some "cowboy esk" 44 loads and you will remember she can be a sweetheart like the other 2. Bottom line. One ultimate answer doesn't exist but it sure is fun pursuing it any way. For what it's worth. I ended up with 44 magnum as the winner due to variety of firearms, loads available in a pinch, cost of components bla bla bla. My heart will always be with the 45 colt and I still load a shoot that caliber .... Just not nearly as much. I don't have any .41 magnum at the moment, however that is a regret 😂

.357 Mag become the sort of do all homestead cartridge with .45 Colt and 12 gauge for "reduced logistics". Part of me wanted to follow Elmer Keith and go .44 but I'm finding the .357 Mag is doing everything I've asked of it so far including whitetail here in Georgia. For me, the eye opener was seeing just how easily that RCBS 250 Keith bullet over 21-gr of 2400 from the 6" Anaconda whizzed right through the doe I took last November at 53 yards. She was quartering to me so much that I shouldn't have taken the shot...but entrance was near the driver's side front bumper and exit was passenger side rear quarter panel. She died within 10 yards. My .41 Mag cast loads and .45 Colt loads could have done the same thing with less drama to my arthritic knuckles. I believe the Skeeter Load would do the job with more comfortable shooting, BUT I'm not carrying a 5-lb. gun to shoot .44 Specials out of. If I'm not shooting Magnums out of my "tank" model Ruger, there's no reason for the extra size and heft.

The 357 mag barrel 12.5 inch barrel on the same gun is performing the same way with a flatter trajectory. Took a Hog with both cartridges at 45-50 yards. The 44 had a larger entry wound and permanent cavity obviously. But end result was a dead Hog on both. 357 load was a 180grain berger Soft point with 14 grains of H110 behind it 44 load was Buffalo Bore 240 grain.

This is an issue that has come up in my own life as well. Like you, I've gotten heavily invested in 44 magnum over 20+ years, only a few guns, but a pretty good stash of brass and components. A friend of mine impressed me with what he was able to do with his 45 colt loads..from a Peitta1858 Remington cartridge conversion. With simple, soft lead reloads with very mild recoil, the expansion and accuracy he is able to achieve is all one will really need in the real world. After considering either swapping to 45, or to 41 ( a nearly ideal caliber in my opinion), i considered it best to stick with what i already had, as at todays prices it would be a significant investment in guns and components, and the role filled would be one covered well by 44 magnum, with loads that are easily rolled with the resources i already had. The only thing that makes me waffle on this, is the specific guns that are available- some of the 45 colt and 41 magnum guns i see are pretty tempting, a little lighter and slimmer than what is available in 44. But, unless one drops in my lap at a price i cannot refuse, i'll stick with 44. The availability of commercial ammo is an advantage, yet the reality on my end is that i don't buy much ammo, and have not for years as when i adopt any caliber, i prepare to reload it in some quantity. And while i do load some hotter stuff, most of what i make is a midrange load, beyond 44 SPL, but not a balls out magnum. Your comments on packing the BH vs the RH are spot on. Im getting old and crotchety, and that BH looks better and better, despite the allegedly 'limited capacity".
@plowboysghost
@plowboysghost 3 месяца назад
If I could get enough out of what I have, I might let go of the Redhawks and everything .44 Magnum. If not, I certainly don't want to lose much...so I'll probably still have this going on a year from now. I imagined tromping through the woods with that 4.2" Redhawk .44 Mag in my Diamond D Guide's Choice chest rig, loaded with the hottest Buffalo Bore or Garrett's Cartridges' bear slammers. The gun is heavy, it doesn't really fit my hands, no matter the grips, and my 310-gr handload is the hottest I've shot through it. To me, my .45 Colt Blackhawk with those 315-gr @ 1250+ can do ANYthing my heavy .44 Mag handload can, and the BH will do something the Redhawk won't (for me)....that's CARRY/ PACK well. I look at this 5 lb. scoped Redhawk I just put together and wonder why I didn't just put a 2x Burris on a new 6.5" BH .41 Mag and have a lighter gun..... So... if I sell the scoped Redhawk, I'm going to buy a new 6.5" BH .41 Mag and put the lighter (7-oz.) 2x Burris on it instead of this 13-oz. 2-7x32 Burris that I don't really aim to use at greater magnification than 2x, anyway....

@@plowboysghost I traded a rifle for a 7 1/2" SS Redhawk, and put the smaller Weigland sight mount on it, with a small Sight mark reflex sight on it. This is for a truck gun, where its weight will not be an issue, and its power and DA capability might be handy. Also planning on a 4 1/2" RH, as i carried a 5.5" blued RH years ago as a CC gun. A bit heavy, but with good holster and belt its not terrible. Like a fool...i sold the RH, thinking i NEEDED a stainless model, but never picked one up. The advantage i see in ruger is the weight distribution. It makes handling hotter loads more doable, at least for me, compared to a smith. I carried a 7 1/2" BH in 44 for a while, and even that big gun packed well, and felt great in hand. Loved that gun! As i get older and more crotchety, the more a SA revolver in a large caliber, paired with a bowie knife strikes me as more practical as a carry ensemble. Keep up the good work!

I’ve never handled a 41 magnum, but I’m a fan of the hotter Skeeter 44 Special loads out of a model 29 over full house magnum loads. Always seemed a good balance there. Admittedly I’m a bit biased from my upbringing… but honestly all the options you’ve listed can handle just about anything you’d need them to face. Honestly in your shoes I’d probably just stuck with 41 and 45, they’ll cover most of that same stretch light 44 special to heavy 44 magnum can offer in setups you already have and love.

I'll stick with keepin' a .44 Magnum revolver around for one reason. In the gun stores I have been in, .45 Colt and .44 Magnum Ammo has been available. I very rarely see any .41 Magnum Ammo. Granted, you can reload it and you're not the only one who does. I just like the idea of having a gun I can readily find ammo for no matter where I may find myself in the South, Mid, Or Western US. (The Free States I Mean). Because if things go bad, You may find yourself in a different location besides home and need to scrounge for ammo. I don't see .41 Magnum being plentifully available. To me, the 44 mag. falls into the bear defense category, so a double action revolver with a 4"-5" barrel is the way to go, because it weighs less so it easier to carry around all day. Either a Redhawk or S&W Mountain Gun in .44 mag. would work for bear defense. The same revolver can be used for close range hunting with open sights, if the hunter can shoot it accurately at say 30-40 yards. Farther out, a scoped handgun is much better.

Carpal tunnel, tendonitis, and perhaps a little arthritis have made .44 magnum a bit less fun than it once was. Hell, on a bad day my .357 magnum is a bit much. I prefer .38 special for practice these days. However I certainly want the right tool for the job. If I was going into an area with grizzly bears I'd want at least .44 mag. I would like to try .41 magnum. I don't think I've ever even known someone who owns a pistol chambered in that caliber. I think I might have tried .45 Colt a time or two, but Im not 100% sure on that.

I own two in .41 Magnum, and I love the cartridge. I'm studying on a 250-300 gr bullet mold at the moment. Paco Kelly wrote that he got a 300-gr cast bullet to run 1260 fps out of a 4-5/8" BH. At .410" that .41 Mag is only .019" smaller than the .44 Magnum's .429". I don't have .41 Mag for a "big bear" cartridge, mind you. That would be 315-gr .45 Colt (.452") @1250+ fps from a 5.5" BH....or heavier and faster if I buy some pre loaded or a heavier bullet mold.

Finding ammo and bullets for reloading is the biggest problem with the.41 but on the other hand if you reload you can load the.44 mag to duplicate any power level you want. If you want to go with the.41 then you should do it. But I would advise you to keep at least one.44 mag. If we have to justify all of the guns that we have on need it would be very dull and kind of boring, and what is the fun in that?

If you want a magnum handgun that delivers serious punch and don't reload, the .44 Magnum is the clear and obvious choice. The .41 Magnum is essentially dead in the water as far as factory loads and guns go. The .357 Magnum is a great self-defense round, but I wouldn't choose it for seriously large critters. The .45 Colt is a decent choice for the hand loader, but it has one annoying flaw in my opinion...excessive case working during resizing, resulting in poor case life when shooting maximum loads. My own choice is the .454 Casull with less than full-throttle loads. They're relatively pleasant to shoot and the cases last a lot longer, while still delivering more power than most any .44 Magnum factory load.
@plowboysghost
@plowboysghost 3 месяца назад
I've not had any issues with .45 Colt cases when loaded many times with heavy loads....yet. .41 Mag to a caster and reloader will be around a long time. It may not appeal to the ammo shelf majority, though. I can't decide it that's tragic or cool...being one of a minority subset "cult following" 😁

Droped the 38 super 10mm 40 and 357 and i jyst went to 45acp and a few 9mm Don't get me wrong all the calibers were fun and had something going for them. Please explain your position on your statement that it’s closer to the .44 mag please. My take is that .41 Mag is closer to.44 mag than .357 because .41 Magnum uses a .410" bullet vs .429 for .44 mag vs .357 for ..357 Mag...that the. 41 Magnum can run bullet weights that overlap heavily with .44 Magnum , and that paper energy figures for .41 Magnum can exceed 1000-1100 ft lbs of energy .. quite a bit more than.357 Magnum, but much closer to the middle-upper end of .44 Magnum

Can't say I like the new Redhawks at all. I like .44 magnums.But when you get right down to the brass tacks of it the .44 has zero advantage over a ruger in 45colt loads in my opinion. You not that long ago did a video on pack guns for back country. For me it has been more towards the 5.5-6.5" range of a ruger blackhawk, and Bisley frames fit me best. I've only owned one scoped revolver. It was a super blackhawk 44 with pachmer grips. There's one issue or point I will try and make here that often happened in my camp. The scoped ruger suffered the same fate as did the 14" scoped contenders did. Mostly left at home for the comfort of an easier package to carry, and a scoped rifle. The contender I had was a set of four barrels. 35 Remington, 358 JDJ, 375JDJ, and 45-70. Yet total hunting time one hunt, for one pronghorn. Do with what you will.

I can't see any difference in quality, etc... between my 1987 Redhawk and my 2017 Redhawk... except that the '87 Hawk has sharper edges around the trigger and trigger guard than the newer one ...which is still a one piece barrel like the earlier ones. I scoped that Redhawk in the video for sitting in a deer blind. I sure don't want to haul it around 😁 I figure that it'll get hunted with however many times I go hunting during the season, but I sure won't ever wear it. It'll probably get ignored a lot of it's life with me for the weight and size.....but I do have confidence in it greatly increasing the chances of a good hit as opposed to the great amount of luck that played into me actually hitting a deer with the iron sighted Anaconda last November.

If factory ammo was all you shot, then the .44 would cover you well enough. But being that you cast and hand load, there’s no upside to keeping the .44 around.

Other than the investment in .44 mag and some level of affinity for .44 Magnum, I wouldn't be limited in any way with whatever the task at hand if I didn't have .44 mag and had .41 mag and Tier I-III .45 Colt to work with instead.

Sounds like you have a sore hand and ringing ears. Take a while before you decide to divest yourself of any good caliber. It will be more expensive to undue that decision than it will be to just wait and make sure you want to do it. Maybe look at your 44's and see if you have one you wouldn't mind selling and use that to treat yourself to a 41 or 45. Either way, all three of those calibers are good medicine so you won't be lacking. Take care.

That's what's going on in my head today. It was a combination of throbbing eyeballs and sore arthritic knuckles. 95 rds of RCBS 250Keith bullets over 21 gr of 2400 and 310gr over 21.5 of H110 from a rest can do that😁 I'm already thinking I'll stay in all three cartridges.

Been shooting and loading for 44 mag since the mid 70's. I have tried most brands of revolvers. Got rid of every Ruger. Now I have a few 629's and an old Dan Wesson with 4 different barrels. To me the 44 mag is a better round than either the 41 or the 45 Colt. Why? well... the guns for each are the same size. That being said... the 44 mag will always be more powerful than the 41 mag.... course you are a Ruger guy.... I am not. The Redhawk is clunky no doubt.. I got rid of all mine. you need to try a Smith 629. It is the goldilocks gun... Not too big and not too small. This is exactly the size you need. They made one in 41 mag but again... why bother? For single actions I like/love the 44 spl. The BH like all Rugers are big and clunky. Colt SAA and clones in 44 spl are.... again.... just right. There is no chance I will get turned around and load a 44 mag in one of these guns (they simply wont fit) and.... handy... Basically you can safely load 44 spl to around 1100 fps in Colts and clones. You have more extra meat for safety than in say a 45 Colt. If a 41 mag is 'good enough' to take over a 44 mag role then a 44 spl at 1100 fps using a 250 grain cast and coated slug is plenty close enough to a 41 mag to do the job. But mostly my 44 spl rounds are 250 grain at around 850-900 Real crowd pleasers.... everyone loves shooting em... and... accurate. So my take is the reverse of yours. Why would I want a 41 mag or a 45 Colt when the 44 mag can do everything at least as good and.... has a 44 spl to go with it?
@plowboysghost
@plowboysghost 3 месяца назад
I have owned quite a few N Frames in .44 Mag and I own one now in .41 mag. I'm quite familiar with the Smiths. .41 mag can do anything.357 mag can and more...as well as nearly anything.44 Mag can...that's why .41 Magnum. .45 Colt can meet and exceed .44 Sp. and .44 Magnum, in nearly any role, so long as it's in a stout Ruger. That's why Ruger over Colt SAA size.

@@plowboysghost Ummm kinda sorta not really? How many J frame 41 mags have you seen? 'nearly anything' is not 'anything' I think you are getting tunnel visioned a bit here in that the 44 mag is simply way more versitile. in guns that are useful to carry DA the Smiths are the thing and the 44 and 41 are the same size but the 44 much more useful. you are not being objective in that you have to have 45 Colt rounds that have giant 'CAUTION' wraps on the box (or should have) so that you don't run one 45 colt load in one of the weaker 45 colt guns. I have thousands of loaded rounds. I want to put my 44 mag loads in my 44 mag guns...my 44 spl loads in my 44 spl guns... my .357 loads in my .357 guns. You want to have a couple of calibers that take special loads for each gun. Nothing wrong with that of course if you are super careful but not the way I want to live.

@@doranmaxwell1755 Tunnel vision? Charter arms made a snubby mag pug in .41 mag. When I tout the merits of .41 mag, I'm talking about what the cartridge can do. Not how small a gun it can be found in.

@doranmaxwell1755 3 месяца назад
@@plowboysghost I am also talking about what the rounds can do. The 44 mag will always edge out the 41 mag. It is hard to follow your logic since sometimes you use words like 'nearly as good' and other times you talk of the guns for these rounds. You are not gonna find a scandium framed 41 mag or 45 Colt but you do find em in 44 mag and .357 mag. My point is that because of the 44 mag neither the 41 nor the 45 Colt really need exist.
@plowboysghost
@plowboysghost 3 месяца назад
@@doranmaxwell1755 It would be hard to understand my take if you think that .44 Mag will always edge out .41 Mag. Nothing will always do anything. My point in the video was NOT that .41 Magnum could always outperform.44 Magnum. I clearly stated that .41 Magnum, properly loaded, can do 90-95% of what most .429 Magnum can. I stand by that. My .44 Magnum "equal' is .45 Colt Tier III..and I stand by that, too. I say that .357 Magnum need not exist when .41 Magnum fills it's shoes and more...while accomplishing NEARLY anything .44 Magnum can. ...and that .44 Magnum need not exist because .45 Colt CAN accomplish anything .429 Magnum can but with less pressure. Furthermore...if the Ruger NM Blackhawk.45 Colt had existed while Elmer Keith was pushing the Colt .45 past its limits, there would likely be no .44 Magnum today. ..for obvious reasons. ..and (although it was more powerful than he envisionef) Elmer Keith pushed for the .41 Magnum AFTER he got .44 Magnum in honor of his hot .44 Sp pursuits....so apparently he thought there was a place for .41 Magnum.

Underwood is a great place to score, as well. I hit one of their sales and made sure my order was at least 200 dollars for the free shipping and I bought 10 boxes for 20.99 of 44 mag 240gr xtp rated at 1500fps out of a 7.5 inch. 5 shots of .45 colt is more than enough to kill anything that moves these new crazy rifle calber hand guns that are coming out are quite honestly ridicolous i dont know anyone that could handle that much recoil and stay on target i think .44 magnum is about as strong as any revolver should be in all honesty i have no desire to shoot .44 mag in a revolver because i know i wouldnt be able handle the recoil and stay on recoil im not particularly recoil sensitive but im tall and thin so theres guns out there that i just cant effectively shoot

It's a good question ? I've always loved .44 magnums and have several Rossi R92 lever guns and Ruger Super Blackhawks in it . Also reload .44 magnums so much like yourself we was pretty well set up on that caliber . What I don't do is shoot a .44 mag pistol 95 times as that would be painful ! Maby 3 to six shots 😁 I never was around the .41 magnum round and am going to look closer at it as it has quite a history . en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.41_Remington_Magnum Looks like Elmer Keith was also involved with it's development .
