Dune is a 1965 science fiction novel by Frank Herbert, it has been described as 'unfilmable' but that hasn't stopped people from trying! Tune in to hear Dune (movie not novel) expert and friend of the show, AJ from Cult Popture explain its arduous (and ridiculous) journey from page to screen!
This is a comedy/history podcast, the report begins at approximately 07:19 (though as always, we go off on tangents throughout the report).

40:48 Richard Stanley was the ousted director of the 90s Island of Dr. Moreau film, which was a previous topic.

I know they said not to, but I can't help myself. It's not 10k years in the future, but closer to 20k. Dune begins in the year 10,191, and year zero in the books is when the spacing guild is founded which is around 10k years in our future.

Thank you AJ! I have since watched the 1984 movie and am now relistening to this ep. You have me hooked!

Fun fact, Frank Herbert was researching the dunes at Florence, Oregon which was the location of the previous report where they exploded a beached whale.

I just want to give ONE PIECE of advice for these books. Just get the audiobook. It’s so much easier if you just hear the text instead of trying to guess the pronunciations.

I am one of the few people that actually kind of liked the 1984 movie. But then I had read the book. The books are incredibly dense. My son in law recently asked me about the movies versus the books. I told him that the books are dense with a lot of political machinations. The 1984 movie reminds me of Star Wars Attack of the Clones with a lot of dialogue and political intrigue crammed into what should have been longer or split into two films. But the books are really incredibly influential and worth attempting. I mean, he read War and Peace so I think he can handle Dune.

33:35 To try and help answer Matt's question, at the time of this comment i believe McFarlane toys has the rights to the new Dune trilogies toys but in the 80s when David Lynch's Dune came out LJN had the toy rights and they did some weird stuff like Stings' character came with a cat hanging in a box with a rat tapped to it.Oh and Super 7 released some reproductions of the LJN line in their ReAction line in 2022.

The cat in the box with the rat taped to it is horrible but valid; Thufir had to milk that poor creature to get the antidote that kept him alive in Harkonnen prison. It was in Lynch's Dune as well as in the book.

@@charityson3752 I knew the antidote cat was in the Lynch movie but i had no idea it was in the book, thats hilarious!
