An interesting list of passengers on the trip included the Reverend Awdry, of Thomas the Tank fame, and a Captain Holmes and his wife, celebrating the 40th anniversary of the day they met, on the original trip, in 1928. 4. The trip was almost ended by on-board locomotive inspectors, concerned about running the boiler too low on water. When they arrived at Waverly Station, both tenders were dry. The only remaining water was in the boiler.

Pegler was a good man, without him there would no longer be a Flying Scotsman, something that is very difficult to imagine if you think about it.

As much of a beauty and powerhouse the Flying Scotsman is, I wish it would have kept the twin tenders and the number 4472. It makes it look much cooler.

Andrew Roden recalls this run in his book, Flying Scotsman. Some interesting facts reported in there... 1. Pegler insisted on a corridor tender, so he could get through to meet with passengers. 2. The tender cost 1,000 GBP, but it cost 6000 GBP to convert to all water, twice the cost Pegler had paid for the locomitive. 3. I remember after she returned from the USA in the 1970's she spent a summer season on the Torbay Steam Railway. For me it was a special thrill, as I got to 'fire' her. I recall making the comment, " I worked on steam on the GWR in the early '60's, but I have to come to work on a 'tin pot' railway to fire the most famous engine in the world. So it is wonderful to see she is back in action again.

A 10 year overhaul is carried out after the loco has been operational for 10 years. If 4472 returns next year, it will mean that her next 10 year ovehaul will be in 2020

How long do we have to wait before we see Flying Scotsman and Tornado side by side??

they are planning to have her ready in 2010. top gear used tornado because the flying scotsman wasnt ready for running due to delays.

@novawheels Thats exactly what they meant. All preserved steam locos in england have to have an overhaul once every 10 years.

@novawheels yes and that is a short compared to when it was a new engine. It could be 20 -30 years before an overhaul

i was at MRM yessturday 25/09/2010 shes still in peaces expected to rebuilt sometime in 2011 there has been delays due to her firebox having a lot of damage and a shotage of copper to repair the boiler

I thought that the overhaul wasn't actually going to take 10 years, but that was referring to the time it will be until the next one.

This is a truly beatiful clip. A true work of art. I've been pondering though, what happend to her second tender? It has been removed and the original look of her has been taken away.
