It's the stuff nightmares are made of or even a scene from 'Jaws.'
Imagine being out in the ocean only to have a 12-foot shark attack you.
That's exactly what happened to Kai Cole.

Another shark attack in Maui, Hawaii. I just saw another one where a 39 year old man was eaten by a shark, 3 days ago. This is why I don't swim in the ocean, anywhere. In the other video they say this poor victim who died, was the first attack in the past 12 months, yet this lady was also attacked. Glad she survived, but doesn't sound right to me when she says she and this shark have a connection. 😮 Yes, he will eat you next time lady.

She said that she wants to go and dive and swim with sharks. The Hawaiian people that are born and raised in the islands, respect the sharks and do not go swimming with it. There’s always these other people who come and live in Hawaii that do stupid things.

Me personally, not worth it. Unlike any other form of wildlife, you usually don’t see a shark coming, as they are ambush predators. I feel it’s pretty irresponsible, but to each his own. And I would suspect that some of the people who died, would have done differently if given the chance.

I remember a local a long time ago tell me always have a natural white uncolored bottom of your board, because sharks typically swim along the bottom and are scanning up to the surface for floating edibles like smaller sharks, rays, turtles and the like. Her board is a NICE TURTLE GREEN underside color. Maybe don't fix that board. Just put in on the wall as a reminder to ALWAYS BUY BOARDS WITH WHITE BOTTOMS.

Dangers are all around us, is that a good reason for staying at home? The reward you get from surfing is far greater than the slim chance something bad happens. sharks don't see us as food, the murky water was the reason the shark made a mistake. nature is for us to explore and enjoy, doing that out of respect for nature takes out the fear and for the most part the danger as well

As horrible as that experience is the true HORROR Show is 90 - 100M sharks being killed, having their fins cut off and thrown back in the water to die a slow death, so yes, this is a tragedy. I wish there was more attention to the 100M sharks being killed, and tortured every day by commercial fishing industry! Let's get fair coverage, Sharks are smart, sentient, and highly intelligent, so give them the SAME COVERAGE!! Nice to see her actually admit she should not have been in the water. I love that she brought up Ocean Ramsey's school to dive with sharks. Love her.

All of us who have been around the Hawaiian islands most of our lives are all of our lives know that the tiger sharks move closer to shore in the fall months. There are reasons for this it has to do with food and breeding populations and fledging birds.

Wow! You did every thing right (except listen to your gut when you had the "sharky" feeling which I believe is an evolved instinct that all humans have that tells us we are in a dangerous, predator hunting ground when the conditions are perfect for hunting). You described a classic Tiger Shark attack on a sea turtle. It attacked your board right where a turtle's hind flipper would be so my guess is that your foot or the leash was dangling in the water at that location and you moved it just before the attack. Sharks always attack from behind and if the sun was at your back, that would be most ideal for the shark because sharks know their prey cannot see when looking into the sun (because they have executed attacks thousands of times in their lives and know they have more success when attacking with the sun at their backs). When you hit the shark hard on its head, that was perfect because it told the shark that you were not a turtle, but rather you were something else that the shark had never encountered and thus, you were dangerous. That move probably changed the whole dynamic of the attack and made the shark wary or scared of you which caused it to move on. Regardless as to what people say, I would bet that Tiger Shark populations in the Hawaiian Islands are probably on the rise in part because the sea turtle sanctuaries there are probably having success at conserving and growing the turtle populations, thus, causing more Tiger Sharks to realize that Hawaii is a great mating and feeding area (mind you, I have no idea if how successful the turtle breeding programs in Hawaii are, but it would just make sense if attacks are rising in Hawaii that the reason might be in part, that there is a growing food source for Tiger Sharks there). More food to support more sharks. Personally, I think surfers need to start evaluating their surf spot for the day based also on its "sharkyness", not just how good the waves are or how blown out the location is. Most will think this to be massive overkill and laugh off the idea, but its not overkill these days. Shark scientists are learning more and more about shark behavior and they need to start pushing this to the public. Sharks move in somewhat predictable manners and are attracted to somewhat predictable locations. Surfers need to understand these patterns for the dangerous sharks that inhabit their oceans and try to steer away from areas where sharks are more likely to be at any particular time of year or on any particular day (just ask land hunters if bear, wolf, and mountain lion behavior is somewhat predictable). Hunters spend a lot of time in wilderness areas and surfers do the same in marine environments. For example, do not surf near turtle rookeries when the baby turtles are launching into the ocean as this event will certainly attract Tiger Sharks to the area to feed on the mama Turtles laying their eggs and maybe to feed on the babies when born. Same with White Sharks and seal rookeries.

You need to say ok to your gut on those moments where it suddenly hits you; because the angels only give short notice right before it’s important. A blink of an eye. That’s all it is. I’m not saying to harbor fear beyond your general awareness but when your third eye space opens, and it brightens the moment intellectually or spiritually, you better take heed so there will be other days for your craze.

She is a lot tougher than you, I doubt you could have kept panic at bay and punched the shark while riding on its back. Surfers tend to be the bravest when faced with a shark attack, other surfers will paddle towards the person being attacked and try to save them, something I doubt you would do. Surfers are also often the first to someone drowning, even on patrolled beaches. Sharks are everywhere in the ocean people who think they aren’t are the very stupid ones.
@Saidakine

They all surf in October. She states she made a mistake. The surfers still surf . We call October Sharktober here. Maui has the most sharks attacks in the World next to Florida and Australia from Oct thru the winter but they all know the risk and still surf. I don’t swim in certain areas this time of year especially where there is a lot of turtles. I don’t swim in murky water. Tiger sharks are not to be messed with and they will bite anything. Unfortunately some the best and less sharky spots to surf was in Lahaina. The Harbor and Paumana in particular. It’s really heavy here right now, people are depressed.
