Both destroyed the ice, but the .45/70 was clearly more devastating. The concussion from the .45/70 also blew your scope cover right off the bench! SWEET!!

You might want to try freezing some pink fiberglass insulation in your water. It helps hold the ice together so you have something left to compare penetration and the like. You have to play around a bit to determine best fiberglass loading.

I was once on a famous Lever Action page and mentioned that I was doing some bullet pulling and re-seating a hard cast round the same size in the cartridge. Several folks went nuts about how dangerous and stupid I was. Finally some long time reloader came to my defense, said he does it often. As long as everything is measured an snug it's all good. The 450 Marlin 325 Flex tip can be reloaded nicely with a 300 or 350 grain projectile.

Suggestion for next time.... Set up a nearby glass taped to a log. Fill with about 2ozs of Bombay Gin and some Canada Dry tonic water. Leave room for ice. Demolish ice via 45/70 - which rains into glass. Remove tape. Lift glass and Enjoy! Cheers from Barrie, Ontario, Canada.

With two blocks each , it has occurred to me that you could adopt the "high tech fleece bullet stop" it is probably trademarked or protected by copyright so it may be prudent to ask first, Paul seems like a nice guy so I bet he wouldn't mind especially since it's in the name of science.
I have both calibers and they're a hoot to shoot. I have that same RAR 450Bushmaster but my Marlin 1895 is the GBL model with full length mag tube and big loop lever. Favorite levergun I own with my 1894 Marlin in .44Mag
In the marlin you should be able to push Barnes 300 gr bullets to at least as fast as that black butterfly stuff. I’d love to see them pushed as fast as they can go.
Absolutely impressive! This is a good display of the transfer of energy. If we could encourage a consideration of the location of ammo & extra firearms at time of shot. Everything in front of the muzzle is subject to the blast. These 2 rounds in particular have extreme muzzle blast. Things could get marred if not permanently damaged. Just an observation to consider. Thanks for all the time you put in and bringing us along.
Ooh ooh, food dye in the ice, that'd be cool. Like, first an inch of one color, then the next, and so on and so forth. Like a frozen rainbow or something. Sure, it's take some time to run back an forth and add an inch or two into the bucket, but maybe it'll be worth it. Maybe have the kids add some glitter or something. Fun for the whole family :)

Nice!!! The way those exploded was awesome. My personal 450 is a cva hunter. It has a 25 inch barrel. I think you should consider getting one and show it off on the channel. I just shot two does at 350 yards with mine and they dropped like a sack of potatoes. It would make a great mid to long range rifle for ya. Super accurate. And I’m only shooting factory hornady black box ammo. I’m excited to try some custom loads to see the potential.
I’m not sure in inches. I’m using the mildot system because my scope is mildot. So I sight in for 200 yards. At 100 yards the bullet will be one mil high which is about 4 inches. At 350 yards the bullet is 2.5 mils low. I’m not sure what the conversion is on that one.
I know at that distance the velocity is about 1244 and the energy is about 858. Plenty of power. That’s roughly the same as a 44 mag pistol point blank
You do the fun and goofy stuff all the rest of us boys wish we would take the time and make the effort to do. Keep it coming, keep it coming. The .45-70 is the most versatile rounds ever produced. From lightly loaded, low pressure rounds to hard cast solids more than capable of cleanly killing the African Big Five, the old 45-70 keeps life interesting and keeps on making hunters and shooters appreciate one of the two best caliber/rounds ever developed. The other best round is the .30-06. Thank you Uncle Sam for both.
Those slo. mo.shots looked like when Darth Vader blew up Alderan. I have always found Tasco to have very good, nice priced gear. I have a few Tasco scopes and because of your vids, now 3 tasco trail cameras. I have come to like the brand. e.bay is awesome. Cheers.

thats a lot of patience and effort with the ice to only get one shot at it.. maby if you put some paper in it while it was freezing it might hold together enough for a 2nd shot

Btw is your Marlin in this video a newer one made under Remington? I mean with some adjustments and aftermarket sights I guess they are ok, but I dont know if you saw what the community was saying about the decrease in quality after the acquisition of Marlin and if u have any thoughts on it. I know this is an old video but maybe you'll see this.
@@WHOTEEWHO mine is 2016. When u get time Google some of the gun-community forums on "Marlin quality goes down after Remington purchase" and you'll see what I mean. I'm almost positive my open sights are off and I had to tighten the bracket so the tube-mag wasn't loose from the barrel. It's still a nice gun and looks good to the eye, but like I said if u get time check out what I was saying. Thanks for making great vids too btw :-)
Would adding sand or dirt to the water before you freezing it slow the bullets down better? Don't know if would stay mixed together while freezing. Could make it like a sludge so it has a better chance of staying together.
I would like to see the Nosler CT 300 grain reloaded in the .45-70 with 53.7 grains of IMR4198. I always enjoy your 'really fun' videos. Keep the Volunteer State free, brother.
Silly question time, do you plan to do a "how many blocks of ice?" test like you do with milk jugs or have you done it already and I simply haven't found it yet? I'd nominate testing a spectrum of calibers. 45-70 Government versus 45 Long Colt versus 30-30 versus 7.62 and just for amusement, start the test by plinking the ice block with .22LR. 🙂
