I made a tool like yours to put the fish plates on but I put a round handle on it to make it easier to use and then painted the handle bright orange so it would stand out and be easier to find on the layout. Any bright color will do!!!

Nice work and demo with explanation! I, too, am a bit curious as to why you are not using cork here, but you are a man who knows what he is doing, so I just sit back and learn! Cheers!

Hi Anthony, thank you. (Same answer as I gave James) I am not using cork as this is just for storage and will be under the main layout. I will be using cork on the main layout as it helps to give a nice ballast shoulder. I don't find it helps with sound deadening which some people use it for. I build my baseboards from 12mm ply with 2 by 1 bracing at 15" centres. This cuts down on the hollow or drumming sound.

I have found that it is easier to solder enough sections of flex track together to do the curve before trying to lay the track. If nothing else this will usually eliminate any problems of getting a kink in the track. It's also much easier to solder the track straight when it is on a straight area.

If you use the curve track gauge to curve the track in the beginning, then use the other curved track for your final curve, how much tighter is the last curve? Why not buy a finished curved template? What is that finished curve radius? For what I want to run on my layout, I can't go any shorter than 24" but bigger would look better! Say a 28"R or 30"R. But a few industries that have shorter cars might get an 18"R, as long as I have enough cars as a lead off from the switcher! I use clear silicone to hold my track down, until I ballast everything! The silicone allows me to pull the track back up if I need to correct a kink. PECO rail joiners(fish plates) are really hard to slide onto PECO track!

You can't always get a template for the curve you want my curve ended up being around 20", most of my stock will happily go round a 2nd radius curve which is around 17.2". I am limited to space available as to what I can fit in, while making the most of the space. Peco fishplates are tight that is what gives them could connection. You should always go for the biggest curve radius you can get away with.

I noticed you are not using cork, I am using code 83 track, but waiting for the Peco unifrog #6 turnouts to arrive in Canada

Hi Mark a very easy to watch and well explained video on track laying. I think any newcomers to the hobby would greatly benefit from watching. Just 1 question do you not use insulated fishplates on your points? Cheers Andy

It depends on how you wire your layout and also your stock can sometimes cause shorts on insulated points.

@@DonegalDadRail yes it was a problem with dmu's going over multiple points. I put power to all my tracks (dcc) other than in my storage yard where I want some tracks to be isolated. I do use peco points that have less plastic than the hornby

Its what I use, once you get the hang of using Flexi track you won't look back. Will probably be doing some track laying on this weeks live stream. If you can pop in and can answer any more questions and show you. Livestream every Thursday 7.30pm Irish/UK time
