For me it's the clean up, and then the field. '47 brand just gets it right every time. The colors, the material quality, down to the metal clasp on the back. There's really no other brand that does the dad cap like they do.
That's actually decent feedback, because I wasn't sure the photos and video that I took did a good job of capturing how they look. The 'fisheye' effect I get from using a close distance shot really exaggerates the shape of everything, including my face. In reality, the dad cap actually looks like a kids' cap on my head, which is what I was trying to say later in the video. There's a lot of variation in the crown shape on the standard, which is why I've also published a few videos on how to shape that portion - I haven't done too much work on the Marlins cap here. I'll choose standard crown a majority of the time because there is enough volume for forehead comfort and also to leave my hair looking professional if I wear one until I get to work. I find my dad caps are best on weekend mornings when things are way more casual.
I’m the exact opposite. I have a few 5950s but I love Dad caps by far over structured caps. To me they’re cooler (temp) to wear and I don’t have to worry about reshaping them if they accidentally get squished. The ‘47 Clean Up is king in my book. The difference being the deepness of the crown. Allowing for variations in the manufacturing process, Clean Ups usually have a deeper crown than 9twentys which makes them more comfortable to wear. Most the 9twentys I own have shallow feeling crowns so they feel a little small on my head. The only reason I have them is because I couldn’t find the same design on the Clean Ups, even though ‘47 Brand has way more current, alternative, and retro designs for the Clean Ups than New Era does for the 9twentys. An example being the new designs for the Marvel designed caps for MILB which seem to be exclusive to New Era. I stumbled across this vid by accident but I’m looking forward to watching your other vids.

Thanks for this comment; this is exactly what I was looking for! I actually like the lack of depth in 9twenty hats because I have a small ear to top of my head ratio. I was thinking of purchasing a 47 but you just talked me out of it 😂
The 47 brand clean-up cap easily beats the New Era 9TWENTY. The clean-up cap is a traditional dad cap. It is really soft on both the sweatband and the top of the hat, and it feels like a pillow. The 9TWENTY is a nice dad cap, but it does not feel like a traditional dad cap. The 9TWENTY has a thin layer of buckram and it has structure, which is something a dad cap should not have. The sweatband is not as soft and not as comfortable. New Era is not famous for dad caps, and while the 9TWENTY is a hat I wear occasionally, I prefer the 47 brand clean-up. 47 brand is specifically known as an adjustable hat company, so they will perfect the art better.
I own both and the sweatband on the 47brand is the night and day difference. It's soft, comfortable, and feels premium when you really take a look at it.
Totally agree, although I may have edited out some of my continued praise for the 47 sweatband... it feels more natural as soon as you slip the cap on.
The 9Twenty I just bought has some kind of white support material on the 2 front sections that gives it a little more firmness so it doesn't relax really at all. I like it.
Oh 47 all day. I have a few New Era dads and they not nearly as comfortable or form fitting as 47s. They’re like the try-hard of dad hats. However New Era 5950s rock. Lesson: stay in your lane and go hard.
Tough one because like you, I own and use primarily standard New Era 5950 caps, however I prefer the 47 brand for dad caps. Also I prefer the 47 MVP over the 940. In this range of casual caps, I lean towards the 47 brand for its quality, fit and style.
Good review! I prefer 47 Brand when it comes to dad hats. I think they just pull off the broken in look better than New Era right out of the box. I wear 5950s, too, but those are summer time hats for me. Here in Florida, you need a cap that can take being sweated into and dad hats just aren't up to that challenge when you're out and about! 😅
I bought the 9Thirty on our recent trip to japan. I believe this model is exclusive only to japan. Its a mix of the 9 twenty( nothing stiff) and the 9forty( you can really pull it down up to your ears. However i still prefer the '47 clean up for comfort and style.
Whoa, that is interesting find, and I've never seen one of those. I was in Hong Kong and Dongguan last year and visited New Era shops in both cities, but do not remember seeing that either. Thanks for posting!
@dreinthe616 the 9 thirty line is managed by a famous Japanese designer GORO NAKATSUGAWA in collaboration with New Era. 9Thirty caps have his signature yellow stitching on the sweat band inside.
I think the quality of the logo on the 9Twenty is noticeably better--at least for the Denver Nuggets cap I wear. That was a noteworthy difference for me. The 9Twenty is much cleaner and more precise, especially in the basketball in the bottom center of the logo. Colors on the 9Twenty are richer and more saturated.
I like the shape of MVP 47's hat with structure but I'm always worried about keeping the shape. Maybe I should try the CleanUp/DadHat, but I don't like the wash effect.
For sure, it feels weird to be wearing one! Still have the major fitted preference, but there are a few situations - mostly around the house - where I've gotten more comfortable with the low silhouette. Thanks!
My problem with 47 caps is they stain too fast in the sun. I hsve like 10 caps and they all turning red at the brim and such. White shen i sweat a little. They are so comfy but dont last worth a lick
I think you mean the '47 MVP? That is the low profile structured cap model made by '47 brand. It should be available wherever you find other major adjustable hats. Also - I've visited Hungary before, spent a few days in Budapest - greetings from the USA and koszonom szepen!
I have not purchased a 9Forty except for a K-Frame version, which is a little high in the crown for me (taller than a standard 59Fifty). However, when I go for the low silhouette, the MVP is a terrific cap - I'll probably own more in the future. Only drawback is that the embroidery goes through the buckram, so sometimes causes discomfort on the forehead when you wear it pulled low. Thanks for the question.
Have only ever owned 47’ brand in “dad hat’s.” So I know bugger all about the New Era equivalent. That said, out of the 2 you reviewed/compared here, I personally think that the New Era model looks better on your head. P.S. The fitted cap on the bottom shelf to your left & our right looks incredible, Doug. One I have never seen before either. And while just a wild guess on my part, seeing what looks like to be the letter ‘a’ with a feather running through it, might it somehow be Atlanta Braves (God’s team in MLB) related, as well?
Good spot on that cap - it's my personal favorite among my entire collection. It's actually a custom design released through the Clink Room, and called "The Airborne" - and while it's not formally connected to the Braves, I've always said it looks like a perfectly designed Braves alternate cap... the red undervisor is the perfect finishing touch. Not removing the sticker is dumb, maybe it works for those who resell hats pretending is new or almost new though. I tried to keep the sticker and just after a few days using it after removing the sticker the color changed because of the sun, so the rest of the hat was different. After a few uses can't notice that and all good but...
Despite the best efforts of New Era marketing, I'm pretty sure there's no compelling differences between the Casual Classic and the washed cotton 9Twenty that I reviewed here. Plus, the 9Twenty is more widely available - even having several caps with the somewhat overlapping subtitle of "Core Classic"

Fair point, but I was trying to evaluate the construction details and cap feel - when I put them on I can't see what color they are, so I just tried to dial in on the experience of wearing each one.
47 hat looks a lot better. The only adjustable hat I really like is the structured 9forty snapback or strapback cotton hats. That type of hat only seems to be available in Europe for some reason. I used to buy them at a site called hatstoreworld.com until they stopped selling New Era.
