My opinion, the 2nd half of this album is thousand times more interesting than the first half. Some of their best riffs peppered throughout.

dehumanisation / sum are the single best 2 songs in the album

The last grouping of tracks (from Shed onwards) is like an unstoppable, relentless tornado destroying everything in it’s path.

Meshuggah is straight up guitar trance music. I think their approach to minimalism really solidifies this notion. I don't listen to them as if they were a metal band. Pretentiousness aside, feels goodman™

Yes, exactly. This album has taught me patience and unbelivable restraint. Also gives me a sense of brooding anxiety that is ultimately relieved during certian parts of the tracks.

Most Spastic riff ever and most minimalistic solo ever. Rhythm and lead guitar switch roles since the former plays a lot of notes while the latter just 2 on 2 octaves. Unique.

The lyrics are not performed by Thomas Haake, they're performed by Jens Kidman.

@@_Hitechlowlife Only the guttural vocals are by Kidman. The spoken words are by Haake, on every album (I guess). He said this in some interview.

The 8 strings really showed up even before that when they made Nothing in 2002. For Nothing they started using 7 string guitars but using the top 7 strings of an 8 string guitar. But they did eventually get 8 string guitars made for them by Nevborn (I think). To some of us real old-head Meshuggah fans, the term "djent" really means something else. :) We weren't calling Nothing and Catch 33 "djent" at the time. The term originally came from the guitar sounds that came from the None and DEI albums where they used heavy palm muting on chords and made this huge "djent" sound. It has since evolved into a whole genre which is associated with really tuned down 8 string guitars and has taken on a different meaning.

@@timothydog76 The original release of Nothing had standard scale Ibanez 7 strings tuned down to F Standard. Meshuggah weren’t super happy with the guitar tone, and shortly after their Nevborn 8 strings came in. They re-recorded all of the guitars on baritone 8 strings and Fred remixed the record. That’s why the re-release guitars so much cleaner and brighter.

Just to add to that, using programmed drums was not a usual thing to do in 2004/2005 at all. Especially since barely anybody could make programmed drums sound so good. They still sound super good even today.

It’s quite mesmerising, could definitely fall asleep under the right circumstances for sure. In the video I was more so referring to the fact that I was so hyped to listen to the album that I couldn’t possible fall asleep, lol

Same! People think I'm insane because I fall asleep to Meshuggah, but the beat and rhythm of (some of) their songs are really relaxing to me.

I've fallen asleep to Cradle Of Filth, during the loudest parts, but the rare quiet parts were waking me up... I think it's all about the dynamics

Clockworks makes me think of Concatenation in the way it's a full controlled chaos.

@@morganshibby8941 The first I heard it I felt lost and anxious. But the feel to wanna understand this chaos drew me in. I was amazed at how well constructed it is. These guys are absolutely incredible. Tomas is insane!

Yeah especially in the end of dehumanization that's very confusing with all the layers above layers and the guitar changing the pattern in the middle of it...

They were playing that section in 2005, not 2007 (I saw them live in both years)

The mighty badass yet super fucking musical SOLO by the always Mighty legendary Thordendal

Might be my favorite solo period. It is not complex but it just has so much stank on it. Starts with whiplash then hits that catch that gets your head bobbing.

Everyone always seems to overlook this one, but for me the riff at 43:31 in Personate non Gratae is the pinnacle riff of this album, I just wish it was longer.

That's exactly what happened. Meshuggah wanted to release it as one track but the record label demanded they split it up into tracks

@@02SplinterCell02 Don't know if you know The Mars Volta, but their album Frances the Mute had (I think) five songs, of which one was 32 minutes long but also split into parts. Very interesting band btw!

Ha, for me the most brutal part of the album is just before that - 45:56. It's like death in a car crash replayed over and over or getting stabbed in the heart.

I remember it made me stop what I doing and I just sat there frozen in awe of what I just heard

Destroy, Erase, Improve deserves that credit.

A lot meshuggah fans didn’t like the move away from the older, thrashy stuff they were doing like chaosphere. Old heads felt like it was a step backwards lol

i much prefer older meshuggah, but this is the last album that i love with a burning passion, each one had an identity up until obzen were i found they stopped making new songs and started trying to make new *meshuggah* songs, and starts to feel forced (bleed still kickass tho)

i loved it from the moment i first heard it. but i was a huge stoner back then. also, i think after listening to it (easily) 100+ times.. the recurring riffs kinda get bit old. still a great album though and one that definately broadend my horizons.

Personally, minds mirrors thru in death is death might be my favorite djent song ever. But recently I got a massive appreciation for the last 4 tracks once I really realized what the albums about. It's so darn good.

The funniest is knowing a track by heart and not even knowing what the f is happening if you look closer. Like in do not look down, very easy to "sing along" but it's so groovy and organic you don't even notice the guitar changes key in the middle of a pattern every time. It's just the same pattern up until the solo whatever the key is and just occasionally comes together with the 4/4... Baffling.
