Considering you basically didn't say anything about Yamanashi prefecture, let me add something to it. The Shingen-ko festival is a yearly festival in which they celebrate one of the greatest Daimyo of Japan during the Sengoku Jidai: Takeda Shingen. It is also one of the largest samurai (reenactment) gatherings in Japan.

I agree. Yamanashi also has some nice onsen and is famous for grapes and peaches. I'm also partial to the sake breweries there like Tanizakura and Shichiken. I haven't really seen much of the Shingen-ko matsuri but had the honour of taking part in the parade. In recent years the city has also rebuilt quite a bit of the castle. Unfortunately nobody has any proof what the main tower looked like so there's still discussion how or if to rebuild it. The Takeda shrine where the castle of the Takeda clan was is also pretty nice. They have theatre plays there.

Few additional recommendations (Aomori, Tochigi, Shimane): 2) Aomori also has the Nebuta festival in summer. If you haven't checked it out, you definitely should if it ever allows visitors again. It is also one of the most impressive festivals all over Japan. I also found it relatable what you said about Yamagata pref to have a special place in your heart. For me it was Aomori, where I spent my first year in Japan. My very first stay was in Shimane tho, which is also why I can give a good recommendation for when you go there again (↓). 9) Tochigi's main city, Utsunomiya, is only famous for Gyoza, which will be disappointing once you eat them, but for people who are fans of bars, Utsunomiya apparantly is an infamous bar town with many more or less famous bartenders. The beef in Tochigi is also extremely delicious. 33) Shimane has one of the most important Shinto shrines in all of Japan, considered to be the oldest one. It is called Izumo Taisha and is probably Shimanes biggest tourist attraction. Foodwise it is also famous for soba and green tea, which is freshly produced there so it is very delicious. My husband and I actually plan to have our marriage ceremony at Izumo Taisha, because it is THE Shinto shrine for marriage. It was also the first Shinto shrine I ever visited when I was in Japan, I didn't understand at all the importance of it lol
@EbbFlowe
@EbbFlowe 2 года назад
My first stay in Japan was as a volunteer in Shimane as well, I came down here to recommend Izumo Taisha as well! I'm not sure if it's still operational these days, but near the shrine there's also a Japanese History museum that delves into Japanese creation mythology (Izanami/nagi, Susano'o, Orochi, etc) since legend has it that Izumo is where all of the gods of Japan originate from. Apparently all of the gods from throughout Japan gather in Izumo in October for some kind of summit.

@@captainkacke1651 That sounds awesome! I had the pleasure of being part of the community for several "Oda Matsuris" during my short 3 months there (re: trophy foreigner XD). There was one time where they actually let me carry one of those 80+ pound, 15 foot tall "backpack shrines" for lack of a better term around the town for the parade. The older man I took the burden off of for a while even stopped by the place I was staying to give me 5000 yen as thanks for the help! Absolutely LOVED Nikko. Getting off at Tobu-Nikko station in the evening, the town was covered in lights and lanterns, the food was great, the town was surrounded by mountains, and everyone was so kind and friendly. The tourism bus was incredibly helpful. It runs every 20 mins and takes you to all the big sights, 3 buses total, all to different areas. I’m actually debating going back for another night on my trip

My favorite RU-vid Channel! Miss Japan so much and this has become my drug to satisfy my craving. Though you have been to all prefectures in Japan I hope you never run out of great ideas to make videos about JP! ❤️

Sorry your trip got cancelled. Gotta love the timing of everything. So far December has been interesting. My dad was sick just after Thanksgiving and I thought it was the certain virus but actually it wasn't and I got that news yesterday. Just 2 days from now is my birthday so I'm pretty much getting my plans in order to have a fun day. :)

Shimane Prefecture is definitely underrated! Every time I visit (usually on the Sunrise Izumo overnight train) I keep finding new places to visit. If you spend some time there, I absolutely recommend Gakuen-ji, a beautiful temple complex in the mountains behind Izumo City and the Iwami Ginzan Silver Mine, near Oda City.

Nagoya is not boring, it is famous for its great food such as Misokatsu, Hitsumabushi, and kishimen. Besides it is home to Atsuta jingo which is one of three major shrines of Japan. You should make a video in Nagoya too!

#24 Mie: As someone living near Matsusaka, I suppose I should be happy we got some attention. But Matsusaka beef? Well, sure it’s one of the top 3 ‘wagyu’ brands, and yes it’s pretty fantastic (if you have a gazillion yen to shell out)…but if you’re coming all the way to Mie, you really should pay a visit to Ise Jingu. (If you don’t know, it’s the most sacred Shinto shrine in Japan… and a really fun area to hang out as well!) Just my opinion. But great video! 🍻

Visited Ise Shrine on my first visit to Japan many years ago. Those wagyu beef are expensive. Gyutan is more affordable.

I've lived in 3 prefectures, and have visited 42 out of the 47. My suggestions for the prefectures you've only driven through: Saga - Karatsu Shimane - Matsue and Izumo Shiga - Hikone

I visited the city of Matsue in Shimane. It has a beautiful castle, one of the few originals still standing from the time it was first built. There is also the house that Lafcadio Hearn lived in, where I was able to observe the Monument to Hearn's Hairs - they found a few of his hairs and built a monument to it. I am serious.

When I first caught one of your first 12 Days of Christmas video, I thought it was incredibly amusing - watching a cranky brit is just one of those things I enjoy. When I did eventually find out why you're doing this, I felt incredibly sad and my heart reaches out to you for not being able to visit family after 2 years of the craziness that took over the world. I'm now watching this video series, so I can hopefully help you commiserate and hey, at least be of some help even just online in getting over the disappointment you'll be experiencing this Christmas. Keep it up Chris!

We just decided not to go to see our family in Argentina. We haven’t seen them in 2 years. We didn’t go on vacation since we wanted to be considerate of the weakest in society. I hate our apartment by now. WE FEEL YOU, CHRIS! Cheers! And thank you for making your videos. I miss Japan terribly. But thanks to you at least I know it still truly exists. 🤣

Hey Chris, whenever you can do a video on the Saga Prefecture, on top of Tea, the prefecture has a cultishly famous drive-in Yakitori restaurant in Imari. You might wanna lookout for zombies down there, though. Zombies and cosplayers are everywhere.
