#48 DIY Lawn Fertilizer - Replacing TruGreen for my yard.

Tractor Time with Tim

I've used Tru-Green lawn service for several years because my DIY attempts were not working well enough.
TruGreen has done a very good job with my yard. Both weed control and fertilization have been great.
However, I'm a DIY kind of guy, frustrated that I couldn't do as well as the professionals.
So, this year, after some winter research, I've decided to take on this project again.
This video shows the chemicals I purchased, as well as showing the John Deere 1025R and Rural King Sprayer to apply the first treatment.

Watched your video, I have a pull behind sprayer I have only used for weed control. I bought a 2 1/2 gallon jug of Gordon’s 15-0-0 weed and feed, it’s only been a few days but after a rain I can’t believe how much my lawn greened up. Can’t wait to apply it to the rest of my 6 acre lawn.

Like tractor, like grass, GREEN! I like your setup. Being in the country, my fertilizer is for the garden only. Yard has to fend for itself if it wants to grow. Seat time is always the best. That sprayer looks like it does a great job. Better watch your neighbors, you might have another job on your hands and extra money in your pocket. Or Christy's pocket. Better not let her read this. She just might hire you out. :-) Then again, if you have the time it just might be a good thing.

Might want to add a switch on the 12V sprayer power supply that you can hold while spraying. Simple to turn it off when crossing driveway etc. Makes it easier to get an even application in tight spots without “double dosing” part of the spray pattern.

DEF is made from UREA and is a 15-0-0 equivalence. TSC you can get 2.5 of travelers DEF for 7.00$ Tank mix at least 4:1 - apply on cooler days as Urea is volatile and you want the plant to take it in more than disappearing into the air. You can get urea pellets for a bit cheaper but its a better deal than the fertilizer isle urea based liquid ferilizer

+Tractor Time with Tim I spray for a living as well and you should find out how far you have to go with your spray width to be 1000 square feet. After that measure how long it takes you to travel that distance. Then measure how much liquid comes out of the nozzles in that amount of time. Then you know how many gallons or quarts per 1 thousand square feet your rig is doing. At that point just read the label. It will be a certain amount of active ingredient per 1000 square feet. Then it will be calibrated just like true green chem lawn or almost as good as evergreen.. my company ;)

+Blake Owen Thanks. That is very helpful. I'll take this approach next time, and video it. Any idea what pressure I should use for the 'fan tip' nozzles? I used 60psi for the first spraying, but it seemed to generate lots of drift. Oh, and I'm sure you saw both types of tips that I attempted...which type would you recommend? Thanks again.

I was a chemical applcator for a friend for a number of yrs he worked for true green an started his own business an he knew the right amount of mixture to each thing he has muscular schrosis an at that time i was his right hand man when it gets hot out he has to throw his hips to get his legs to move so he watches what he does but i walked many a yard with a herbie that sprays micro spray when your walking it you don't see it very well but as long as your 3 feet from plantsz an shrubs your good an bout 6 inches from the ground drift isnt a problem. The nitrogen he had im sure was in gallon jugs an he had it in bags an i went from shrub to shrub with a tool called a deep root fertilizer it consists of a jug an a spike with a foot peg to drive it in an a couple handles one does a quarter turn to open enough to let the fert out then close it back then move onto the next shrub we did many sub stations for electricity an gas did a place where delco remy used to be an borg warner an exide battery just to name a few , those were some good days now that i look back on it at the time i was ready for the day to end just cause there was a lot of walking that had to be done .

even when you're working with chemicals that do not interact with glass, you still pour in your water first. water first = water splash when you pour in your chemicals. if you pour chemicals in first, your chemicals will splash when you pour in your water. safety first

Unfortunately, the straight nitrogen without replenishing potassium and micronutrients is essentially like junkfood. Basically, trying to body build on snickers bars and cocoa puffs. It also contributes to nitrogen stress when the weather warms. Bit it IS basically a tru green type program.

You don't say where you live, or what kind of grass you have. The 1# of N/1K sq ft seems a bit high for early Spring. In my area, early Spring apps for cool weather grasses, us about 0.75# of N/1K. You mentioned "greening up fast." That is NOT what you want. Your description of the fert did not include anything about release rates. In 2016, fert technology has improved, so that any app of N should include a "slow release." Without "slow ..." you will get high grass growth rates immediately, but the effect will fade quickly. That is NOT what you want. You want a product with controlled release. This means the N will be fed to the turf slowly, but for a much longer period of time. Without control, the turf will a growth spurt, and then fading, until the next app 6-8 weeks later, then another growth spurt, then fading, ... etc. What you want is a release rates to minimize the spurts. The growth rates should be nearly the same across the entire season, even if you put down five apps. The commercial applicators, such as Tru-Green have come a very long way to make improvements, so that the uninformed should not see much difference across the entire season. 15 years ago, Tru-Green put down material that caused major growth quickly. One could count on a "hayfield" two weeks after the app, and the lawn would remain very strong for a couple of weeks, and then fade off fast, ... until the next app. These cycles have been all-but eliminated in recent years. Even consumer products off-the-shelf now have control release.

Still a work in progress. I've sprayed it a second time now adding the trimec and the Barricade. I took video of this, but I wasn't entirely happy with the results. I guess I should post the video anyway so that others can see the education process. The first application didn't 'green up' the grass as much as I would have liked. So, I added more liquid nitrogen for the second round. That worked much better. My dandelions are now dying. I'll make an effort to post the video. Now that I write about it, I realize that it might be helpful to you and others to see my progress or lack thereof.

@TractorTimewithTim
@TractorTimewithTim 7 лет назад
I did post one followup, but not sure it answered your questions. The nitrogen I used didn't last very long. It did indeed green up the grass. But within 4-5 weeks, it was losing it again. Also, the nitrogen is pretty 'touchy'. On my 3rd (or 4th??) application later in the summer, I apparently used too much nitrogen. I burned the grass pretty bad. I intended to get some video posted first thing this year where I show more detail about how to calibrate the sprayer. I just haven't got around to it yet. I think my approach now is to apply most of the fertilizer with granular fertilizer, but still apply the weed n feed and crabgrass preventer via liquid form. The fertilizer would have longer term 'staying power', and the herbicides are more effective and less expensive via liquid. ...but that is my current thinking. we'll see how it goes.

Some things you might want to consider. 1. If the weed/feed didnt work, I guarantee you didnt put it down correctly. Even then, most reputable companies like Scotts will give you your money back when you screw up. 2. Buying a John Deere tractor and a sprayer for a small suburan lawn is more cost effective than TrueGreen? You could have put the money you spent in an investment, take out yearly interest, paid TrueGreen and still had your initial investment. (You just wanted a tractor!) 3. Did you calibrate your sprayer--NO. You need to know the exact speed to drive to determine the "rate of delivery". I agree with your "Do Your Own Pest Control" advice but the bulk of your information is dangerously suspect. Not measuring the liquid nitrogen (incidently --it's not time released like 99% of the granules on the market) and not having calibrated equipment is poor and marginally dangerous information. Put me in the thumbs down column.

Thanks for your reply. Of course I didn't buy the tractor to pull the sprayer. I said as much in the video. I'm putting together a video with 'real' calibration soon, including detailed calculations. However, it still won't suit some folks. Haters gonna hate.

Have no problem with you Tim! I have a tractor too. Just hate to deal with someone like bondoly66 that has nothing to add to the forum and wants to get their two cents worth in yet knows nothing about the subject. Enjoy your tractor!

Thanks for the 'more friendly' tone. Like Bondoly, I was a bit 'put off' by your tone in the original comment. Now that you have struck a more friendly tone, I'll address your comments one by one. 1. Weed/feed didn't work: First, I'm not claiming that it "didn't work". The fertilizer portion of it has worked beautifully for me. I have had issue with the 'weed' portion of it. Specifically, it says right on the package to apply when the grass is wet. That is not easy for me to accomplish. So, yes, technically, you are right...I didn't put it down correctly. I know that. Probably didn't explain that in this much detail in the video, but didn't think it was necessary. Wasn't trying to argue with anyone about the effectiveness of weed and feed. 2. If you've watched my other videos (bondoly66's point), you would see lots of subtle explanation about my tractor. Reading the comments, it is more obvious. You are absolutely right that I don't NEED the tractor. I've never been hesitant to express that (and laugh about it). Again, this video did not in ANY WAY say that I bought the tractor to pull this sprayer. If I remember correctly, I explicitly said the opposite. I've spent money on all this stuff, it began to 'bother me' that I wasn't doing my own lawn fertilization. Seems like exactly the opposite of your claim. On the "investment" portion, I appreciate your point, but it is simply not accurate in this case. So far, not only has my tractor provided endless hours of recreational fun, it has also resulted in MUCH more cash income than investing the corresponding sum would have provided. So, no, your comments about investment are not factually correct. Having said that, you could dig through my garage, living room, or elsewhere, and find MANY items which fit your description. Should have just saved the money and invested it. ...and I would guess that the same is true for you. 3. Calibration. You are correct. I did not do a 'formal' calibration. However, I did examine how much chemical I wanted to apply. I suppose there was lots of prior experience, and simple 'common sense' used which were not mentioned in the video. I inherently knew that one take of 'mix' would do the entire yard. Yes, I should have calibrated to make the video more scientific. So, I am putting together a formal 'sprayer calibration' video now (not sure when it will be done, as it takes lots of time to do all of the steps, and I've been quite busy). Again, I do not think the tone of the video was "Tim knows best...this is EXACTLY what you should do to your lawn". At least I hope it didn't come across with that tone. Overall, none of my videos are meant to be the "final answer". I'm showing what I'm doing. Success sometimes, failure sometimes, but always enjoying it, and hopefully always improving. I'm not trying to say that I am smarter than you. I doubt that I am. I'm not trying to say that I'm more experienced than you either. I'm not out to prove anything. I'm hoping that folks find entertainment value out of our videos. I'm hoping they see that our family gets along well, and enjoys doing projects together. I'm hoping that they see that they CAN do DIY projects without some sort of professional license. BTW, as it turns out, I do not believe I applied enough nitrogen in that first application. I upped the rate for the second application with much better results. ...then, I have failed to get around to the 3rd application...which is really needed at this point. So, perhaps I should have stayed with TruGreen. At least they get around to it when it needs to be done! I think we spend too much time tearing each other down in this world. I enjoy the relationships which we have been able to create with subscribers much more than the details of any particular project. I hope this explanation makes sense, and is not taken offensively, as I sincerely don't mean to offend. Tim

I was pleased with their service, but I chose to DIY. Probably should have stayed with them...as I killed my grass once. Oh well! Gives me something to work at.

Chris, now I'm wondering if I ever responded to your comment. If not, I'm sorry. I DID get a laugh out of it. Of course, I'm wearing a Menard's shirt as a write this comment! Menard's has T-shirts and hats "free after rebate" several times a year. Usually there is a limit of 4 items or so each time. We max out every time. We started this so that we could work in these clothes, and when they get greasy, or damaged, we just throw them away. Since we started the youtube channel, it has become one of our 'signatures' if you know what I mean. So, we just keep loading up on the freebies of all shapes and colors. Last fall, they had hoodies for $5. So, we got the limit of those as well. Mine is kinda worn, so I'm hopeful for a repeat on THAT sale! Anyway, we have a lot of fun with it. I hope it brings you a chuckle as well.

Chris Pastuf Menards has the normal hardware, like Lowes, only cheaper. Then, they'll have some items which you can hardly imagine. They'll have Beef Ribs, breakfast cereal, a large section of books, and who knows what else?? It is kind of an adventure to shop there. I guess I should contact them, maybe they would sponsor us for REAL???
