Taking the old Dodge out for a test drive around town. It has a 251 flathead 6 with the original 4 speed trans and drive train. Was sitting for many years before I ended up with it. I had to drain the old gas and rebuild carb- currently running off a temporary boat gas tank. Installed new points, cap, rotor, wires, and she fired up. Replaced the master cylinder and all wheel cylinders to get it to stop. Trying to get the hang of double clutching with a little grinding here and there. Was a little nervous taking it out on the road for the first time, but made it back without issue!

Love that old Power wagon. Unmolested. See few with fancy paint jobs, lift kits, newer power trains....love em better stock n original.

The "civilian" One Ton Power Wagon was essentially a WWII-era military chassis with a 1939-ish Dodge pickup cab grafted onto it. They were off-road beasts. Dodge actually built them for domestic U.S. sale until 1968, if memory serves. After that, they could not meet the federal safety standards and the dies for many of the parts (especially the cab) were simply worn out. Back in 1973, a local electric pole line construction company where I lived still used this model of Power Wagon for the really tough off-road power line-building jobs in the mountains. The one I saw working was a 1965 model. It was essentially the same as this one, with just minor differences in tail lights, turn signals, etc. The "newer" ones also had synchronized gears in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, much like the contemporary "modern" 4WD trucks of the era. This truck likely had the engine replaced at one time. If memory serves, the '48 model came with 230 c.i.d. engine. The 251 came along later. I have an owner's manual for the early model like this one. You will get a workout lubing the truck--it has, I believe, 32 separate Zirk grease fittings.

Great info, thanks for posting! Yes, someone upgrades this to the later 251 engine. Previous owner(s) probably kept it maintained fairly well since everything still works today.

We have the same transmission. I have a 1950 B2B. Guys already said start in second. Your shifting at the right RPM just add a double clutch and don’t change the speed of your shifting it is suppose to be that fast. I quickly shift through the gears in my truck as intended. Even though my truck is a RWD i have used first for steep inclines, good loads and off roading. It’s a god send. Still would be nice having a 5th gear for that 4.10 in the rear.

Just to let you know, with a 4 speed manual of this vintage, 1st gear is granny. You should be starting off from a stop in 2nd gear. 1st gear is only for certain applications, like crawling through a field, or while in 4x4 on bad terrain. Your engine was designed to handle starting off in 2nd gear if running properly. Just give it a little more gas. Try it. You'll be happier for it!!

I was about to comment the same thing. We’ve owned those kinds of trucks all my life. Super low geared. Always 2 gear starts on flat ground. Good old trucks. My dad has all the parts to build two 41 Dodge weapons carriers in a storage truck. Those won’t be built until after his death because he won’t get off his lazy rear end and get the projects moving forward. Pretty pissed off about it to be honest.

That's true to even a lot more modern 4WD trucks. 1st gear is like a reduction gear. When the wheels start to roll - you need to shift to 2nd otherwise you rev far too high. We only used it to start in the cold with a fully loaded truck AND a fully loaded trailer either on soft ground or up a steap hill. 99,5% of the time you didn't need it. In the cold on the other hand - you couldn't shift into 3rd before the engine had warmed up. So it was better just to warm up the engine. 1st gear was almost never used. My guess is you could get the truck going with a very cold engine as the reason for having it. Hopefully not having to use the 3rd gear. You needed the revs on the high side for the turbo to be doing it's job. Not so great in an offroad truck - We would joke about the truck being designed at Ferrari - because of the special choices and the trucks being Italian. We had fun using the horns in traffic - nobody would believe in a big truck having a horn hardly suited for a moped. I guess that was a deliberate choice make some confusion in traffic creating a hole in the traffic you could slip into.... That was stealth right there. The perfect truck for city traffic.

@@flight2k5only if you are maintenance intensive and spend a lot money will the newer trucks have a chance at a long life just look at the newer Ford's they have a lot of expensive repairs to keep them going. some have had engines that needed replacement in less than a 100;000 miles that's not good but built rugged? not really.Not to mention Transmission repair I don't think the newer trucks are meant to stay in use for 25 years it'd be too expensive to keep them going be cheaper to replace them than try and repair them.

A beautiful old relic! I fell in love with this vintage Power Wagon as a kid seeing them used here in the local oil fields. Most had a winch and gin pole cable hoist. A water well driller had a small rig on one also. AL B.

Not sure if you know this or not but old transmissions don't work the same as new ones. 1st gear is not your starting gear unless in extreme circumstance like off roading or pulling something. It is called compound or granny for a reason. During normal driving start out in 2nd and treat your gear box like a 3 speed.
@GasandOilGeek
@GasandOilGeek 2 месяца назад
When i first started driving it I found that the clutch chattered quite a bit if I started out in 2nd gear - I think the clutch/pressure plate surfaces may have been rusty from sitting so long. Found that getting it rolling in 1st gear seemed to work pretty good. Now that I driven it quite a bit, it's starts off smooth in 2nd gear, so I think the rust has worn off. It's much easier to drive starting in 2nd for sure. Thanks for the note!
