48 HOURS IN NEWCASTLE | Things to do & places to eat! 

As a born and bred Geordie, I’m glad you enjoyed your experience of our part of the world.

Genuinely love just kicking about the Toon when I visit there from Edinburgh. Down to the Quayside for some food, meandering the streets for pubs. The Geordies are the friendliest folk.

I always love to see our city from the perspective of visitors, it makes me feel proud to be from here, and I often find out more about new venues this way

My City that I love, 10/10

I've traveled to Newcastle (from USA), 3 times in the last 17 months. Love it! I always take the metro to Tynemouth on the weekend when there too. I haven't been to Jesmond Dene, but I'll be sure to check it out next time (this coming August). Thanks for the tip!

After watching this video the first question that came up is - Why haven't I heard more about Newcastle, it seems to be such an interesting and colourful city. Added to the list for next years tour of northern England.

A wonderful video summary of Newcastle, now I need to return with a new place to visit (as if I needed any encouragement)

I'm an American ex-pat living in Newcastle, you got some really good places in, but there is so much more. We are partial to Tynemouth as we live down the road and my son goes to school there (also his school has been a school there longer than the United States has been the United States!). You should time a visit to check out Tynemouth Market, it is more antique and collectables than Quayside but it does also have a good selection of food stalls as well. Whitley Bay is great to get a gelato and walk on the beach up to the lighthouse. I also always suggest the Ouseburn, which is right outside of the city centre and has loads of art studios as well as music venues and good eateries (for kiddos it also has a city farm and independent children's book centre Seven Stories). The Ouseburn is especially great if you can time a visit with either seeing a concert at any of the venues or time your visit to coincide with an open studio or late night show event when many of the artists open up their studios to the public for tours and demonstrations and interactive fun.

Even as a local this was eye opening! Some inspired finds I will be looking for when next in town. You're welcome back any time.

Newcastle looks wonderful.

My son and I love Newcastle. It’s so easy to get to via train from Edinburgh. It’s a lovely journey along the coast as well. I recommend the Biscuit Factory. A wonderful arts and crafts museum. It’s in a very cool old warehouse building. Highly recommend.

The things to do there in Newcastle looks so amazing! The Museum inside is so much like the Natural History Museum here in London, UK which has the same displays of Dinosaurs & others too! I'll definitely put this city on my to list soon!

Got to say this is one of, if not the, best travel vlogs I've seen of my home town! Really showed the city's true character (plus the often overlooked surrounding area). Though I would say that we did give a hell of a lot more to the world than greggs, Ant and Dec and lucozade!

As someone who lives in Gateshead I tire of watching videos on RU-vid from non-Geordies who mis-pronounce place names or show the awful parts of the North East, your video is quite the opposite. You nailed it and it paints our city in a very flattering light, so thank you. Excellent video of our great area. It is fairly easy getting from Newcastle /Tynemouth to the South of the Tyne. A19 Tyne Tunnel (toll) by car. Ferry from North Shield to South Shields 9Ferry landing is not too far to walk to from Tynemouth) metro from Newcastle to South Shields 30 mins. Coleman’s Fish Restaurant and Seafood Temple are definitely worth a visit. Places to consider visiting in Newcastle, Biscuit Factory (art gallery and eating place)Fish Quay at North Shields popular area for eating and drinking especially at weekends. Beamish is a worthwhile visit. Once you get out of Newcastle heading north you are spoiled for choice .Market towns and castles galore along a beautiful coastline. Cragside is a great visit as is Wallington Hall( both National Trust).

I also live in Edinburgh and was wondering about doing a weekend there. :)

You appear to have enjoyed my home town. I really don’t appreciate it enough. Thank you. I live on Ouseburn so I don’t appreciate just how lucky I am. You need to try tiny tiny and the cookhouse, also the art around Ouseburn is great.

The Hancock Museum has unlocked a childhood memory. I must have got it mixed up in my head with the National Museum of Scotland. We went to both when I was a kid, but I had completely forgotten about it until now. Anyone remember if this was the museum with the bird stuck in the jet engine... I swear I'm not making that up.

I loved every second i may have to go to some of those eatng places that you tried . you may like to try out Newcastles nightlife. 500 pubs in the city centre its when the locals known as Geordies come alive. Nice video, thanks for sharing. I’m from Norway and visited Newcastle last week. It’s a lovely city with many interesting features. I’ve been in Newcastle many times and I keep coming back. Much more to do. If eating out, I do recommend strongly going to Babucho. Also I do love visiting Whitley Bay, a bit further north the coast from Tynemouth.

I love this video makes me proud to be from Newcastle. Saint Paul’s church in Jarrow is the monastery that the monk Bede stayed and the writer Catherine Cookson :) please try going there.

Newcastle is a wonderful city but then i would say that as i'm from Newcastle :) you did miss a good bit out in this vid but i guess with only 48 hours it was inevitable, for instance while the Hancock museum is very good the Discovery museum is awesome and shows what the city gave to the world , it is also 3 times bigger than the Hancock ;) the Crown Posada is a great pub but the older pub 'The old George Inn' is even better, it was frequented by King Charles !st on his visits to the city ;) then the Centurian bar in the Central station is stunning inside ! i could go on and on so will leave it here lol.

Hi there! New viewer, just followed you a couple days ago, while searching up info on where I’ll be moving to! The move is still a little bit of a ways out, cause I’ve never moved internationally, or different continent. 😂 But I’ll be making a trip out there in coming months to hire a realtor and get the processes started. I’ve been binging through your videos, and really love them! I enjoy learning not just about Edinburgh, but about all the surrounding areas, and the UK in general. I have family and friends there, but I’ve never been. Plus you’re similarly interest minded to me, so that helps(I’m Japanese American, so love all the Japanese food and culture bits! I’m excited to go to conventions out there, that my friends have told me about!). This was extremely informative and enlightening, because I’m a complete nerd for museums and anything of cultural and historical significance. I’m also an architecture nerd. It’s nice to see multiple Tsujiri locations(saw one of your earlier videos in Manchester), as we have a few where I’ve been living, and I love them! Newcastle is "quiet and chill". Hmmm. That has not been my experience of Newcastle on a boozy Saturday night. It's a terrific city.

Forgot to add the first light bulb & the first train engine was invented here plus so much more and did you know northumberland has more castles than anywhere else in UK..

If you want the easiest way to make it from where you were in Tynemouth to South Shields it’s the ferry across the river. It’s cheap and takes 7 mins!

I love Newcastle and this video makes it feel so luxurious. Really though, it is in many ways. I wouldn't live anywhere else than the North East.

Lovely video! Newcastle is definitely interesting city to check out! For me is one of the two cities we tend to go with our friends from Edinburgh if we want to meet half way through 😂

North Shields to South Shields is just a 5 minute ferry ride away so not all that difficult however if you don't know where you're going then I'd agree, not that easy to get from north to south 😬 the ferry isn't all that well sign posted.

Newcastle City walls and castle were nearly completely in tact, until they pulled them down for the trains 😢 ❤ from Northeast England ❤️

Jesmond dene is our happy place 💚

The shields ferry links north and south tyneside and isnt a long walk from tynemouth. Takes about 5 minutes to cross and then you can go from Tynemouth to Arbela in reasonable time. South Shields beaches are fantastic and a curry at one of the insane amount of curry houses on ocean road is a must.

If you had more time you could have taken in a show at the Theatre Royal or the Tyne Opera House, or even the University Theatre. I think you missed out the Discovery Museum and also the Victoria Tunnel as well as St James Park. There's also the O2 Music Academy and Newcastle Arena. The Centre for Life has a great visitor attraction for kids. The City also has some good parks such as Exhibition, Leazes and Heaton, not forgetting Gosforth for horse racing.

I went a couple of years ago with my dad. He’s from there and I’d never been. I was expecting a dirty northern industrial town. It was not that. It was clean, amazing architecture and friendly people. Love it and can’t wait to go back.

I was in the Grainger Market last week and love the whole of Newcastle, I live in Blaydon, 5 miles west of Newcastle and often pop into town with my family for meals etc, great video, thanks Kakibot

FEN WICK?

If you find yourself travelling to the North of England, there are lots of places I recommend in Yorkshire! There are lots of small but beautiful seaside towns that are worth a look (Whitby, Scarborough, Robin Hood's Bay, Helmsley and Malton to name a few).

I had to chuckle at the FenWick bit! 😅 It's a shame you didn't venture up the Westgate Road (?) and experience some of the local cafe's or the new bakery. Moulin Rouge is delicious and the bakery around the corner is spot on.

I will echo the comments below, that say, thank you for visiting the North East. Us Geordies are a very friendly bunch, we take great pride in the area we live in and love when folk visit. Glad to hear your having/had a great time. I sincerely hope you enjoyed Beamish Museum. I love visiting the place. The Discovery Museum is a good place to visit too. Thank you for sharing this video and please come visit again.

I haven't been back in the Toon for 15 years. Born and raised in Gateshead Town. I'm typing this from Guangzhou China where I've been teaching (Geordie) English, fairly successfully since then. As I watched this I was so hoping you would mention some of the other classic places,; but then you did, the Crown Posada. You might not have had time to mention The Free trade pub, (killer view and pub), The Cluny (the best 'on the way upl' for Bands since the Riverside closed) and of course World Headquarters (easily one of the best clubs in the north of not just England - the whole fricken island!). Canny effort though! Across the city centre you can walk from east (Gallowgate services garage) to West, (Sandyford services garage) in 35-40 mins. And from North (Saint James's park aka Mecca) to the foot of the Tyne Bridge (the greatest bridge ever!) in the same, if you keep your pace up. That's how I remember it back in the late 80's/early 90's. Newcastle is trully the jewel of the North and the capital of the north east of England. GEORDIE CAVALIERS! XX PS to walk from the North of Guangzhou city centre to the south or from East to west, you need three hours or a fricken helicpoter x

South Shields is at least 25 minutes by Metro. Should have visited the Oldest Pub the George down the big market area, just long the lane from the Bee Hive on the right. It is said this is where we got our name Geordies from, as we supported King Charles during his plight.

I was in Newcastle once. Loved it. Thought this was one of the best travel docs I’ve ever seen. You missed out Newcastle’s night life / club scene which is really wild, but sounds like you wanted a quiet time

Looking forward to seeing you explore more of the north east I live about an hour away from Newcastle and it's cool to see these videos from a tourist perspective because I often see stuff I didn't even know was there, it's a really beautiful part of the country with some amazing history but it's sadly underfunded by the government and often overlooked by tourists, you should definitely check out Durham the cathedral is amazing one of the best in the world, seaham has one of the best seaglass beaches in the world people come from all over to collect it and the beach front is lovely just stick to that area 😅, Hartlepool headland has the Heugh Battery Museum that's located on a ww1 battlefield they say to be the only one in Britain and the beach there is where the first death in action of a soldier on British soil in World War I happened they also have the National Museum of the Royal Navy where you can see the HMS Trincomalee, Whitby is amazing there's the famous Abby and tons of fresh seafood Scarborough is equally as beautiful and was the first proper British seaside resort, Barnard castle has beautiful architecture the high force water fall the bows museum with the stunning silver swan I could go on and on hopefully you found some of these places and I'll see them soon in a video if not maybe you'll come back to visit more places 😊 Beamish is one of my favourite places so already looking forward to that one 😁
