Every year, there is one day when spirits are allowed to travel from the land of the dead to visit their families on earth. On this day, families come together to set up a table with food and drinks that their departed loved ones used to enjoy, eagerly awaiting their return home."
A trail of marigold petals is laid out in front of every home. At noon, signaled by the ring of the church bell, people burn incense to guide the spirits of their loved ones home and spend time with them for one full day until noon of the next day. Families also visit the cemetery to clean the graves and put up altars adorn with flowers, with candles left lit through the night.
“I can feel them. My love is with them,” said Conrado with a smile, filling my eyes with tears.
There’s a line in the movie Coco that says, “We die twice. First when we’re gone physically, and the second time when we’re gone from memory,” and that is definitely true in this town.
What’s the story behind the day when the gates between the two worlds are opened and the living are reunited with their departed loved ones? Find out in this video.
Special thanks to Conrado for welcoming me and to the people of Chilac for taking such good care of me, sharing their stories with me, and making the two-day trip one of the most memorable journeys in my life.
