I find this thing truly disgusting. A contracts IS a contract. Players are always complaining that when somebody doesn't need them anymore they get let go... But TEAMS DON'T BREAK CONTRACTS. Too many people seem to think the player can break a contract and get away with it. This makes a mockery of the entire process. Damon the SF Socialist bringing up what the owners make. That should have little correlation to what player's should be making. Without owners, there would be no league, no teams. Even Mahomes understands that he wouldn't be making what he's making without the owner's fronting the money for these franchises and the overhead to get things going. It takes money to make money. Players like Aiyuk are not seasoned businessmen. They're players. And yeah, the league wouldn't exist without them either. But they aren't paying several billion dollars to buy a team franchise, or tens of millions to buy into an ownership group. Whether it's a slam dunk money making business, as Damon puts it, is irrelevant. Just as any owner of a business has to and should control runaway costs in a business, they should do it here with regards to wide receiver salaries (especially given the volume of quality receivers coming out of the draft each year). The economics of supply and demand are pretty skewed right now. If an employee for a company has a certain cost in the market and their performance is requisite with a competent employee at that level, they should be paid at the market rate for the region in which they work. Just because the company may be making more money from one year to the next does not entitle an $100,000 general manager to a $350,000 salary if their workload and responsibilities are not commensurate with that. That's before even getting into whether a company is scaling and in growth phase where not only their revenues are higher, but their expenses are also higher. Players don't have to worry about any of the business side of things except as it pertains to themselves and then their agents handle that. Many of the players today get paid life changing money no matter what. Even a guy making $5mil/yr for 4 or so years does very well for his life and should be able to invest a portion and make passive income on his investments. This isn't the 1970s & 80s, when offensive lineman had to have other seasonal work for the portion of the year when they weren't playing football. Starting players, and especially those that are among the best players on their team, are now paid so much money, they have no right to use the argument in negotiations that they need to take care of their family as a justification for wanting $2-3 million more per year than what the team offered. That's extremely disingenuous. And my problem is I can't stand people who use flimsy excuses as fake rationalizations like this. Whatever they get paid is generationally life-changing money that WILL take care of them and their families (if they aren't idiots squandering the money on the excessive trappings of ultra wealthy playboys). Aiyuk is representative of the majority of these entitled athletes who have done nothing else in their life but play a game and are lucky to be paid crazy amounts of money to do so. Let's say he signed at $26/mil per instead of $30. Deebo got $58mil guaranteed. Aiyuk was probably set to get a minimum of $60-65 mil guaranteed. So him going for an extra $2-3 mil/yr isn't garnering him any sympathy with fans. His family isn't going to be out on the street if he's ONLY making $26 million a year. He's already made $12.5mil in career earnings (pre-tax) before his $14mil 5th year option. This means he will have made over $26.5 million in career earnings if SF makes him play on the 5th year option. That's already life changing money (to someone with a brain). If he can't invest even a fraction of that and set his legacy up, then he just confirms the immature overgrown child mentality making far more money than he can handle. Barring a career ending injury, he's going to get another $60+ million guaranteed contract after next year. The point is, either way he has been paid very well and is going to get paid a lot more. Aiyuk is pissing and moaning because he thinks he should get Amon St Brown money. It has nothing to do with 'taking care of his family'. So just stop it Larry with misrepresenting the context of why the fans take issue with certain players. I don't care for Kittle either. He was overpaid, as was Deebo. And none of these guys have even won a super bowl, so good, go get your bag, but preferably do it elsewhere because fans get tired of seeing grossly overpaid players when they don't return on the investment and bring back the hardware but still act like they're the cock of the walk and deserve to be paid like the best.
