4Cs of Diamond Quality: Diamond Carat Weight Grading by GIA. By creating the 4Cs, GIA set the universal standard for assessing diamond quality. When buying a diamond, you’ll want to know about diamond carat size or diamond carat weight. When a person refers to the size of a 2 carat diamond ring, or a 1 carat diamond ring, they’re referring to how much the diamond weighs. Diamond carat weight is the measurement of how much a diamond weighs. A metric "carat" is defined as 200 milligrams. All else being equal, diamond prices increase with carat weight, because larger diamonds are more rare and more desirable. However, two diamonds of equal diamond carat weight can have very different values and prices depending on three other factors of the diamond 4Cs: clarity, color and cut. In other words, it's important to remember that a diamond's value is determined using all of the 4Cs, not just carat weight.
