The thing is, you figured it out so why didn't a mechanic? I once got a motorcycle for £75 because the seller had reconditioned the carburettor but forgot to connect the float to the inlet valve, consequently the valve stuck shut after the bowl filled up the first time ran for a bit and then wouldn't start! So I got it as a non-runner!
