This is the last MD 88 I've flown on, also it's the 30th MD 88 I've been on. With the plane retiring on the 2nd of June, this was the last bird I was able to fly on before it's finally retired. The MD 88 is first plane I rode in over 10 years and is the plane that turned me into an avgeek. If you want to see an MD 88, the Delta Museum has one parked next to their 747-400 and you can walk around and explore both with admission to the museum.

I flew MD-80’s quite a bit back in the early 2000’s as a government contractor. And I would get the last seat closest to either engine so that I could use their sound to sleep during the flight. You can call me crazy but the sound of P&W’s spooling up to full power always brought a smile to my face. Thanks for sharing!

Those are inlet guide vanes (there may be some other way people call them, I'm just calling it the way I've been taught when I worked on the f16). The inlet guide vanes are in front of the first row of blades and the vanes help direct airflow to that row of blades.

I did the same thing as I ended on this plane more often than not.

Man the engine whomping and vibrations never get old on the S80.

The first row of fans are called Stator blades. They are stationary and guide airflow to the first row of blades (which do actually move)

I’ve always loved the sound of this engine. Current engines sound like a buzz saw.

Nice !! I have flown on an MD88 six times. My last flight being Orlando to Washington National. It's mostly Airbus and Boeing now.

In the early to mid 60s flew the ATL-CHS route. Had Martin 440s with linoleum floors, they gave you a pillow and rested your meal tray on it. And it took about an hour flying time, but was never a direct flight, either went to Columbus Ga, or Columbia SC. Night flights allowed you to count the lights below in the vast pine forests. You could see an intersection for miles. Good times in those days.

ジェットエンジンの力というのはすごいと思う乗客を何百人も乗せて荷物を積んで風圧で機体を浮き上がらせるのだから。

Actually the plane that is at the Delta museum is a DC-9-50 but close enough I guess lol.

I'm guessing on the MD88 their is some sort of bladed cover - is that what those stationary "blades" and cone are?
@jcspotter7322
@jcspotter7322 2 года назад
Yes, they're a type of vane to help guide the air to the first set of blades

Can someone can tell me why is the second engine not turning?
@jcspotter7322
@jcspotter7322 2 года назад
That'd be the front vanes. They help guide air into the engine

@jcspotter7322

The fans are moving, the first row are called stator blades. They're a stationary set of blades that guide air to the first set of blades. You can go to several other comments and see that I talk about this
