The splendor of the 19th century is still present today in Rieterpark, Zurich's spacious landscape park. The park is Zurich's largest and most impressive landscape garden and is located in the Zurich Enge district, near Lake Zurich.
The park and the associated villa (today the Rietberg Museum) were built in 1855, were taken over by the Winterthur industrialist family Rieter in the late 19th century and became city property in 1945. Some of the beech trees in the park are from the original stock, meaning they are over 150 years old.
The long, south-oriented main axis rises gently from the villa. When the weather is clear, the visual endpoint is the Glarus Alps, which gives the impression of almost endless expanse. The finely modeled lawn is bordered on the side by woody backdrops, which continually frame the main front of the villa.
Froebel set accents with rare tree species, including many conifers, which increasingly gave way to long-lived beech trees over the course of the 20th century. After the great losses caused by Hurricane Lothar on December 26, 1999, the interplay between coniferous and deciduous trees begins again.
As a classic landscape park, the Rieterpark documents the garden art of the 19th century, which was able to unfold magnificently in the up-and-coming Zurich of that time. The park has largely been preserved and still covers the original area of around 67,000 m².
The blaze of colors is particularly impressive in autumn.
