Shugakuin is the name of this area, which derives its name from a temple that existed in the vicinity around the 10th century (Heian period). If we were to translate "Shugakuin" literally, it would mean "a temple to study". 修(shu)=to cultivate,to complete a course, master 学(gaku)=to learn, to research, systematic knowledge, an institution or facility of education. 院(in)=gardens and buildings surrounded by trellises. Palaces, government offices, temples, schools, etc. Nowadays, the name Shugakuin itself is a proper noun, so ordinary people don't really think about its meaning. This is an aside, but if you combine "修学(Shugaku)" and "旅行(Travel)", it becomes "School trip".
