The Peak Tram is a funicular railway in Hong Kong, which carries both tourists and residents to the upper levels of Hong Kong Island. Running from Garden Road Admiralty to Victoria Peak via the Mid-Levels, it provides the most direct route and offers good views over the harbour and skyscrapers of Hong Kong. Operated since 1888, it was the first funicular railway in Asia.
The line has a stately, scenic and varied history, having been in operation for more than 130 years.
From 2022, the sixth generation of new tram car will be introduced, with large windows that extend to the ceiling and front-view seats that allow passengers to enjoy the view from Victoria Peak, the highest point in Hong Kong, from their seats.

3:28 This is called the (Carl Roman) Abt switch, and the peak trams uses double flanges on one wheel and no flanges on the other wheel to cross this switch without derailing. It is unique to funicular railways!

I was wondering how it didn't derail. Thanks for the explaination.

Thank you! I _was_ curious about that unusual looking switch. Such a simple yet clever solution! And it means zero moving parts on the switch itself, so less maintenance too! (which is handy, considering how difficult and expensive it must be to work on such railway lines) - I did have to look up some images on Google to _really_ get a sense of what you said - I do better with visual aids - but again thank you for the explanation because I was fascinated, clueless and _so_ confused over it! 😁

Ah! That explains why there was a part of the track with three rails. It was to give continuity to the double flanged wheel. (I learned something new today.)

Nice to get the ride before the rush hour and the crowds! Beautiful night shots,and it does show that cable car operation,at its best!! With the reconstruction going on,when will the other intermediate stations be back in service?? Just one more question- how old is that line?? Thank you 😊 💓 ☺️! Thank you 😇 😊!!

probably one train has double flanged wheels (ie: a flange on each side of the wheel) on the left and plain wheels (ie: no flange) on the right ... whilst the other train has the double flanged wheels on the right and plain wheels on the left. So, where tracks diverge each train always stays the side with the flanged wheels. btw, on normal trains all wheels have a flange (just the one flange per wheel) and these are always on the inside of the wheel

On the lower part there seems to be quite a lot of "stations" or halts that were passed. Do these still get used? Or are they all completely abandoned?
@slsso
@slsso 8 месяцев назад
They are still in use, tram will stop by pressing the button on the tram or at the station. From the video you can see the tram has stopped two times while approaching the peak, which in fact is the opposite tram stopping at the stations. The usage of those intermediate stations is low due to high ticket price of the peak tram, which now mainly serves as a tourist attraction rather than a public transport.

How on earth does the point configuration at 3:28 work?! It's dead clever, but I can't figure out how the rails and wheels interface correctly?

Search "Abt Switch" on Wikipedia, the tram has double flanges on the outside wheel and no flanges on the inside wheel.

The outside wheels are double flanged and the inside wheels are flat with no flange.

I used to travel to work on the trams from Wanchai every day, stopping to but dim sum for breakfast then up to the top of the Victoria Peak in the cable car. We installed the networks and a new entertainment system in the new Peak Tower. I was in Hong Kong for many months I love the people there and would love to go back. But I never will as long as China rules as I have heard the horror stories how they treat the good people of that country. I was there just before the UK had to leave and hundreds of thousands wanted the UK to stay as guardians of HK.

How does the emergency brake works if the main cable snapped? Cant see any safety cables that the train could hold onto in case of accident. That's super dangerous, would not wanna ride this cable car.
@tooleyheadbang4239
@tooleyheadbang4239 7 месяцев назад
You could read the Safety Regulations, they're online. You could look at the Swiss engineering company that supplied the operating equipment. Or you could just stay off super dangerous high-tech tramways. Ignorance is bliss!

If you ride this in 2023 or beyond, be prepared to queue across the street for an hour or more, it's a busy ride up the mountain. If there are any Chinese tour groups around you, they will absolutely make it a miserable experience. They aggressively force their way to the front of anything resembling a queue, even in the gated areas leading up to the tram where there are only a handful of people. Expect them to elbow you in the ribs and otherwise push you aside in their rush to get window seats.
