Campanhã Station History
Porto - Campanhã Train Station, originally called just Porto, is an interface of the Northern and Minho lines, located in the Parish of Campanhã, and serving the city of Porto, in Portugal. It is considered the main railway station in the North of the country.[1] It was inaugurated on May 21, 1875,[2] and has been an important railway hub from the beginning, both in the movement of goods and passengers, as well as in railway management and the maintenance of rolling stock.[3] In 1896, the São Bento Station was inaugurated, bringing trains to the center of Porto, as Campanhã was located on the outskirts of the city, making it difficult for passengers and goods to travel.[3] In the 1900s, the Campanhã station lost its importance once again with the opening of the Contumil Railway Station, which also functioned as a large maintenance and management center for rolling stock, alleviating the Campanhã workshops, which no longer had sufficient capacity for that function, nor enough space to expand.[4] Throughout the 20th century, Campanhã station underwent several modernization works, including the remodeling of signaling and traffic control systems[5] and the installation of electric lighting in the 1930s,[6] the electrification of the railway in the Decade the 1960s,[7] and the expansion and reorganization of the complex in the 1990s.
