That was incredible to watch. I live in Sarasota, FL very close to where Ian made landfall. Only a half hour separated my city from the sustained hurricane force winds. Closest I've ever come to a direct hit. The damage was pretty bad in my area, but nothing what they felt around Fort Myers. My heart breaks for those people...

Was on vacation to watch Brady play rodgers and mahomes back to back weeks in Tampa Bay. From Canada, so this was my first experience in a hurricane, this was crazy to experience. Wind was absolutely insane

Come to see Brady; end up seeing the 3rd costliest hurricane in history behind only Harvey (2) and the legendary Katrina (1)

Amazing video! You can clearly see how the jet stream eventually ripped Ian apart once it meets it. Shear upper winds are what ends hurricanes along with running out of 100-foot deep, 85-degree water to power them. Also, it is worth noting from the nighttime portions that Puerto Rico and Florida are vastly overpopulated--seeing the huge concentrations of city lights there. One more thing worth noting is that during the day footage, Haiti is severely deforested. I've been there and saw this terrible deforestation from the ground. Clearly, humans suck and mother nature lets us know how she feels about our very destructive species. She says, "Since love to you pollute my atmosphere with greenhouse gasses--I'll use all of it to send you more and more powerful hurricanes, thunderstorms and tornadoes to deal with you and what you have done to my planet that I spent over a 4-billion years creating for you ungrateful dirtbags."

I occasionally get contacted by an organization (documentary filmmaker, university, meteorologist) about using one of my time lapses. I don't think anyone asked me about Ian though.

Yes. This time may have been catastrophic but when my brother is named after this hurricane, It can get crazy fast lol

Wow. The things you miss when the power is out and you have no Internet. When communication is gone you lose sight of what's going on and have to catch up days later.

I was looking for a video just like this. I have a time lapse of my front yard in Orlando that I wanted to have a picture in picture video showing the satellite image and my time lapse at the same time, can I use your video?

@@RawSpaceVideos I appreciate that, hopefully it's interesting enough when I'm done. We really didn't get much from the hurricane but my camera was pointed at the sky so you can clearly see the clouds.

Why doesn't it show the power outages? I know here in Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda we were without power for 10 days.. You could see so many stars - that was one amazing thing, along with people coming together..

The NOAA satellite imagery product I used for this time lapse is called "GeoColor". It's a composite using optical data during the day, and infrared/aerosol data at night with a static "city lights" layer. The geostationary GOES-East satellite that provided the images and data does not capture low-light or long exposures at night, so it can't see city lights.
