I have flown this approach over 100 times in MSFS and was astonished the moment your video started I knew exactly where you were coming up on Lake Perris (the one with the island) and March Air Force Base in front of you. I would also guess you were coming from somewhere like Phoenix to be coming from that direction since coming from somewhere like Vegas would normally have you come in over Ontario. Anyway it was nice to see the fidelity on my sim is pretty high because the landmarks I saw on this video were so familiar to what I see in the sim. Thanks for posting.

I made the mistake of taking flying lessons at SNA. The Flying Club instructor insisted we head out to a "practice area" over the ocean breakwater south of LA/Long Beach. (Right in the middle of departing traffic from two busy airports instead of out over Lake Forest/Mission Viejo.) So we were concentrating on my ability to track the breakwater at about 2,500 feet and here comes a Cessna departing from Long Beach who flew straight at our 9 o'clock and passed below us by less than 300 feet. I turned it around, went back to SNA and haven't flown since. I was so pissed at the instructor I got out of the airplane and walked away with the master switch on and without further contact. That was it for me.

I remember when the Electra was the main aircraft in and out of the Bay Area. It was the dawn of the jet age and I would go out on the 2nd floor tarmac viewing area at SFO and watch planes take off and land. There were times when the gate agent would let me go onboard and look around unaccompanied, collect first class menus and have a great day. Times have certainly changed.

I made dozens of landings at KSNA flying a Boeing 757 from 2000-2015. The key to a safe landing on just 5,700 feet of runway was to violate SOP and by ducking below the glideslope on short final. Crossing the threshold one dot low on the ILS glide slope led to a safe landing. Those who rigidly adherered to SOP and crossed the threshold preciscely on the glide slope paid the price in trying to stop. Those mostly ex-military pilots did not know there is a time to adhere to SOP and a time to deviate, with common sense and safety being the arbiter of their actions.

My first thought after reading the 1st line of your post: Yikes better not float too much or power on and Go Around
@larrybremer4930
@larrybremer4930 Месяц назад
Interesting. Is MSFS total fantasy because I have done autoland at 620k lbs landing weight (not heavy but also not light) with the 747-800 at KSNA and that perfectly follows glideslope and had no problems making the stop with autobrakes on level 3 (but I do pretty much burn through the whole runway doing it). Also no problem in A320 with hand landing following glideslope and moderate weight (sorry I don't recall the landing weight for that one). What sort of landing weights were you handling? Also don't the QARs rat you out to maintenance and corporate that you were running a low descent rate on final? Obviously I am not a pilot but I really would like to know your thoughts. Edit: I also know that nothing near the size of a 747 would ever land there IRL I just do it occasional when fooling around, like landing an F-18 on Catalina and crazy crap like that.
@tfaudree
@tfaudree Месяц назад
Why are you flying into somewhere that you don’t have the performance numbers for? If you have the performance numbers, you don’t need to “duck below” anything.
@justinsteffenhagen2290
@justinsteffenhagen2290 Месяц назад
I have flown hundreds of flights into SNA in both Boeing and Airbus aircraft over my 25+ year airline career, every single one on profile and within established SOP. Greased most of them on and cleared by echo. And no, I’m not ex military. 5700’ of runway is plenty if on profile and stabilized. You are doing a disservice to the piloting profession to advocate for breaking/making your own rules.

17:40 captain driving needs to NOT stop on that side of the hold short line. He’s gonna get violated someday doing that shit. I know the excuse is going to be “he was still rolling, eventually clearing”, but that isn’t going to fly with ATC.

I see no issues, he never stopped until after he was clear of the hold short line and if ATC wanted him clear the bars faster they would have told him to expedite his exit.
@Aviate68
@Aviate68 2 месяца назад
Yup, even when flying small GA, I always keep it moving until I am clear of the hold short line. That's the way I was taught. However, interestingly, AIM 4-3-20 states, "An aircraft is considered clear of the runway when all parts of the aircraft are past the runway edge, and there are no restrictions to its continued movement beyond the runway holding position markings." It is implied that an aircraft can be considered clear of the runway BEFORE it is beyond the hold short line.

U hold short going into an active runway not when exiting. If u notice the lines they are segmented meaning you’re allowed to cross without clearance unless told otherwise. He did his job nothing wrong there at all

Excellent question. Controls work fine if all screens go blank. Interestingly, decades ago I flew a version of the 767 in which this occurred somewhat regularly on some brand new airplanes, that carried almost 300 passengers. Standby instruments are available during the outage, but it sure gets your attention as a pilot, no matter how experienced!
