Windows rattling like crazy on GMC New Look buses. I don't understand how quiet they are inside in the videos I'm watching? There used to be an old New Jersey Transit New Look Bus video of one idling in a parking lot then pulling out onto Route 1 and cruising down it and the racket was enormous and exactly like I remember those buses. They were such rattle traps.

Talk about memories for me. I even remember at least one bus still having a manual transmission in regular service on the CTA. This was long before the interest in buses trains and other machinery sunk in deep with me. The covers over the cooling fan area and the transmission side were often an amazing sight to see flapping in the breeze while watching the CTA bus bounce and sway over the many potholes in the city of Chicago back in the day.
@cincycubfan23
@cincycubfan23 Месяц назад
This made me laugh…Grew up on Cermak Rd. in Berwyn and saw dozens of these daily as a kid (CTA #25 and 2-3 RTA routes). And, yes, saw more than a couple access panels flapping around!!! High school was late ‘80s when RTA buses became Pace. At the beginning it was fishbowls and Flxbls. Four years later it was those white/yellow buses that became omnipresent.

I also loved seeing you spin around the big wheel without power steering. All of OC Transpo’s New Looks were retrofitted with power steering between 1992 and 95...those that weren’t retired by 95 that is.

I took these in Halifax as a child. At the time, I didn't like them much and I preferred the GM/MCI Classic series that came afterwards, but now I do miss them over the modern low-floor buses. These could hold more, and the seats were more comfortable.

It's the same in aviation. An aircraft like the 727 was seen as ordinary, or typical, by many in its day. Then 20 years later, you're packed in a modern airliner thinking, man, don't I miss the 727.

Phoenix had 30 of these 1961 & 1962 versions plus five 1965 models when I was growing up and many were still in service until 1985. 13 of them were 53 passenger and the others were 45 passenger. Our had 6V-92s in them and were air conditioned. Those buses just ran forever and rarely missed a day. Total engine failures (blown completely) were extremely rare. Memories are clear just like yesterday. Thank goodness you didn't destroy it's history by making an RV out if it.

Great memories of these in NYC as a kid. They looked spectacular in the light gray (metallic) and dark blue NYC Transit livery. I remember playing with the window knobs, sliding them open & closed. Constantly pulling the STOP cord, and listening to the seats and interior rattle on bumps, etc. I do remember disliking the back row seats even though they had a window to see back then, as those seats just got so dam hot to sit on in shorts due to the engine! I heard some of these didn't have power steering either, I couldn't imagine! Thanks for the roadtrip back in time, liked and sub'd, watching from the South Bronx in NYC.

I miss the sound of these " hill climbers " . Growing up in San Francisco , these were the workhorses of the fleet . The Muni Railway originally had 370 of these in 1969-70 . In the 1980s , about 150 of these belonging to them were rebuilt with handicapped devices installed . They were renumbered from 3500-3649 as I recall and lasted until around 1992 .

@RyanBomar, FYI the last Canadian built New Looks were built in London, ON in 1986 for Santa Monica. However, few were built after 1983 as the Classic got introduced. My local transit systems, OC Transpo and STO got the last of theirs in 82 and 83 respectively. Also, from mid-76 onward Canadian Jimmies’ transmissions switched to Allison 3 speeds that made heavenly sounds.
