[4K] SSX 3: A Retro Masterpiece Is Even Better on Xbox One and Xbox One X! 

Hi John, thanks for posting this. I worked on this game as a 3D artist when I was with EA, I also worked on Tricky, and the ill fated SSX on Tour. So cool to see this again, brings back a lot of good memories. Hopefully your video inspires people who have never tried the game to check it out. Thanks again.

Back before I had Live... man the amount of time I went down those slopes and found the hidden routes, doing the loop de loop at the end of snow jam... all to get the skeleton Griff outfit. Also the voice overs between tracks and the absolute bop of a soundtrack that I still love to this day. What a time to be alive.

Saw this video years ago and FINALLY got ahold of an Xbox One just so I could play it! It's glorious 😍 while everybody else is getting their PS5 and Series X, I'm here revisiting 2003 in 1080p 60fps!

i played this game when i was a little kid, spider man 2 and tony hawk underground, the simpsons oh and the lego star war games, these were golden times for games on xbox and playstation

I saw this thumbnail in my recommended sidebar and IMMEDIATELY went to the Xbox store and got this on PRINCIPLE. Seeing this game that I kept my original Xbox for to keep playing it because the slim version kept failing on it and when 2012 came out I retired my SSX 3 disc. Well it's a HOF game now and I'm gonna enjoy running back down big mountain to that epic soundtrack. This was the PERFECT SSX game.

I know this video is 4 years old but I absolutely love how John just grabs my inner nerd and talks about rendering resolution and everything that goes into the geometry like I could listen ALL DAY.

The gameplay holds up so well. SSX Tricky and SSX 3 are both amazing games in their own rights. While not as many liked SSX On Tour, I still enjoyed it. I play all of these games on PC from time to time thanks to emulation. Got the original discs as well. SSX 2012 does not really feel like SSX. It is a decent enough snowboarding game, but even with classic controlls it just did not feel as satisfying to play. It lacked the visual pop of the stylised tracks. It lacked force behind impacts. Railing was made easier with rail magnetism. Making mistakes was not as punishing etc... It's jump to photo-realism and simplifying already simple controls did it no favours. Not saying the game as a whole was easier. There were tracks that was difficult to do, at times being rage inducing even. You know what? I think I am gonna dig for my PS3 and refresh my memory on SSX 2012. Because right now I am critisising a game based on years old memories.

perfectly explained what made this game so great. As a long time snowboarder, this game is what really paved the image in my mind what snowboarding is about. If I could hear some of this games tunes when riding the tram up to the top in Jackson Hole, I would lose my shit with excitement lol

Bought this the day it came out, been playing it for the last 3days. LoL. So many fond memories of this game when I had it on the PS2. Fun fact, I own SSX. Found it last yr at a local game store in great condition

I've been playing SSX 3 in 4k60 on the Dolphin emulator for years, but I'm still happy this is happening. This game deserves the attention.

I grew up playing SSX Tricky. I think the only thing that hasn't aged well is the controls. Mapping the spin/flip controls to the D-pad is a good idea in theory, but that means that when you are winding up to do a flip/spin/rodeo off of a jump you can't steer at all.

I don't recall the GameCube version having any severe drops in framerate, particularly in those Metro City sections highlighted. Load times were pretty good on the Mini DVD too, often matching the XB1X if I'm not mistaken. I also recall the GameCube defaulting to a control scheme where the stick performed spins and flips. In Xbox, you must switch it to the Pro scheme, which also binds jump and boost to the triggers. It took a day to get used to, but I prefer it now over the GameCube control scheme. Man on man does this game take me back. Never did I think we'd see this game return in such a glorious state.

This is one of my favorite Xbox games of all time. I was 17 when my mom bought this for me. The many many many hours I spent trying to best my scores on all stages. I will def be revisiting this.

It's great revisiting a classic like this one. PS2 emulation is also very good but it also has the framerate drops the PS2 version has. XboneX is definitely the best. ...Also, I you're a Kaori fan, too. That's cool. You're Cool.

An accurate and heart felt analysis. Everything he said is true. I have this on the X and when I first hit the slopes, I welled up. I actually cried a little. The industry (mostly) forgot, that games should be fun. True, that the controls take a minute to lock in, but once it clicks, that's it. Awesome game, that now holds up extremely well, thanks to the extra power. Best $10 I spent in a long time. If you have a S or an X, get it and know happiness. Here's hoping Tricky isn't far behind.

If watch the intro video on the Xbox version, at the tail end it shows the logo and it's a perfect 30fps. So it's not the video codec that was the framerate issue, it was whatever method they used to transcode the gameplay footage when it was ported to Xbox.

I got this the day it came out on back compat. Really cool seeing you guys doing a video on it. Also on base Xbox One I'm getting slower performance right before the staging area on Perpendiculous but the rest of the game runs fine.

@DigitalFoundry would you do an analysis on the racing game Fuel from 2009? It features an open game world of 5,560 square miles. And it came on one single DVD! The technical achievement of massive landscape storage and streaming the game world on screen, is something that has to be acknowledged and praised.

When I played the game I never noticed the frame drops because the TV couldn't even display that high of a frame rate. So really, at the time, it ran perfectly.

You should take a look at the CPUs for both the XBox Original and XBox One; their CPUs are from almost the same x86 architecture (Xbox Original used a 733 MHz Pentium III, while the XBox One used an AMD Jaguar CPU, using the x86-64 architecture).

I've never actually heard anyone say they didn't love SSX/Tricky/SSX3

SSX3 was great. But SSX Tricky is THE one that should be remastered!!! It has the best sound design and intensity buildup of any game I’ve ever tried.

All I have to say is there needs to be a SSX TRICKY Remake! Also I have SSX 3 on Xbox One S and it looks amazing even tho I'm not playing it on Xbox One X. The art style and lighting in this game was definitely ahead of it's time. Whoever worked on it I hope are head designers at some big company because they deserve it for making a PS2 era game still look better then some games that come out this gen. I will go as far to say if they did a remake on Tricky I'll want them to go with SSX 3s art style 100 percent, it's that good to look at to me. Maybe one day it'll come back since Skate Boarding games are coming back now. But tbh I now want to play it in 4k.

I'd like to point out that the city level as well as most of the game ran really smoothly on the Gamecube back when I use to play this game a lot, kind of disappointing you guys didn't compare that version as well.

Why did you include the PS2 and Xbox versions but not the GameCube version? Given that it does, you know, exist, and it would have been interesting to see its performance as well when comparing the different versions.

I know it's complicated legally, but one of these days I'd like to see a comparison with a PC emulator like dolphin for one of those games^^

Playing on a PS2 emulator yields same results, though some tampering might be needed to get optimal performance.

I wouldn't mind seeing a remaster/BC comparison. Dead Rising 2 for example has a remaster on the Xbox One as well as having backwards compatibility.

How many hours did I spend on SSX 3 on my Gamecube? The answer is probably higher than I can count. What a fantastic game.. it's really a shame that EA can't follow this formula with a new game. This game needs a proper remaster, although kudos to Microsoft for dramatically improving the resolution via back-compat. I just ordered a used copy of SSX 3 for the original Xbox because of this addition to the back-compat library. And why no love for the gamecube version on the framerate testing? SSX 3 played great on the GC.
