[4K] Sunset Overdrive PC Analysis: A Great Game But A Disappointing Port?

This game looks beautiful in general but playing it at 144 FPS with Reshade installed is insane. I’m so happy the game is finally on PC but man the port could have been more ambitious :/

It's great to see they lifted the framerate cap in this game. Hopefully the Xbox One can eventually get a "X Enhanced" patch, as I'd love to play through it again with some improvements without having to buy it again (although fortunately it is on Steam, so maybe I can nab it in a sale). If anything, hopefully this allows more people to be able to experience the game via PC. It's fantastic and I feel it's gone overlooked over the years.

I love reshade. As a suggestion, It would be great if DF made a video about its best effects and what settings make a difference.

As of 2024, they haven't fixed the cloud save bug that wipes save data. The only way to play it is by disabling cloud saves.

I heard about this yesterday. It flew over my radar. They made it for pc recently. I missed the winter sale on Steam, but I followed it for when they have a sale. Finished Bioshock Infinite this weekend, so this might be next up.

i understand the slight issues with the settings its hard to get those settings to work out in most cases cuz you would need to spend more money and assets to make more settings options but those settings could ruin the over all look

Lets this sink in, Insomniac was able to come out with 3 games in the time frame of 2014-2018 including Sunset Overdrive, in which Crackdown still hasn’t come out despite being shown in 2014. By the way 3840x2160 on Steam, Locked 30fps but the issue is pop-in, and the versions are identical. Lol that’s sad. The PC version of course is brighter since well Tomb Raider resolution is 4K

This game is so fun and fast paced nobody is looking at trees popping out or textures.

Playing this game at 1440p with reshade really makes those colors pop. Game is gorgeous

I wanted this game to come out on PC so much as I never had an Xbox, so glad it's finally made the move.

During the 120Hz at 50% speed section. Set the player to 4k60 and speed to x2 to see it play out as normal. (Would require a 120Hz screen to see all frames) Correct me if I am wrong there, does RU-vid put out 120 frames on a 60fps video playing at x2?

Anole option would really help this game. I can’t imagine it being too difficult to implement. That said, I wasn’t expecting this game to come to PC, so that’s cool.

I have a pc with a GTX 1070 and a i7 4790k at 4.6ghz but i can only play this game in 1440p resolution without dropping greatly below 60 FPS. Is this normal?

That resolution issue seems to effect all games running in borderless window when using DSR or down sampling.

I know Insomniac made both games, but they straight up ripped the wall running from this game and put it in Spider-Man. It is a blast so I'm not complaining.

I get the feeling you guys don't actually play games you just look at the tech behind them. This constant pushing for motion blur is ridiculous. "See that sharp looking texture, I want you smear it so you can't see it properly".

At Microsoft's XB18 event, Phil Spencer said he's focused on PC gaming...yet Sunset Overdrive doesn't support Play Anywhere, and Game Pass. Hell, it's not even discounted via Game Pass. WTF?!?!?!

Seriously tho, I really don't understand DF's love for Motion blur. It's awful. It adds a blur to stuff our eyes already add a blur to. If you're playing at above 60fps, motion blur is essentially worthless. I hate devs who try to make their games look like movies with shitty post-processing like Chromatic Aberration, DoF, and film grains. We're not watching movies. A game like this is NOT a cinematic game. I don't care how high quality you think that motion blur looks, it's getting turned off. In every. Single. Game. Your eyes create a "motion blur" on their own with moving pixels. I wish games would work more on simulating our eyes, as opposed to shitty cameras.

Game has a stutter issue when running on SSD, even on m.2 nvme one. No stutter on HDD. That's weird. What's more, one of Nvidia driver patches just broke depth of field - now when the option is active there is a weird green flicker around the objects.

@Digital Foundry What are your specs? Not once did I hear what GPU or CPU that you're using, nor are they in your description. Please set expectations for a PC analysis when PCs vary.

Idk y but my controller feels weird when I use it to play this game? When I pause and try to load the menu it sometimes doesn’t show some options. Smaa2 imo looks best but it should have better options. Idk the game makes me want to return it.

Now I'm not saying that something like a PlayStation 4 holds Insomniac back, but... Just imagine Spider-Man at 120fps or true 4K at 60fps.

im gonna turn the fog right off. I cant stand all these games that have that weird fog. I first really noticed it in Far Cry Primal. You couldnt turn it off... HZD had it bad... Wildlands. Its like a fog to mask shitty textures far away or something. Its awful

for me it is still reeeeally shimmering even in 4k! why? But it runs pretty well. there are some major stuttering sometimes

Always wanted to play this but I was never going to buy an Xbox one so this is amazing. Especially because I just played Spider-Man. Funny though one of the first games I'm going to play on my new 2080 is 4 years old.

the game is a "steal" on steam for 7.5 dollar (at least in my region)

No draw distance LOD improvement for the amount of work not put into the PC port why not just give it to Windows 10 gamers who own the digital Xbox version of the game.

My favorite implementation of Motion Blur is the "Off" one.

This had been my "go to" game whenever I wanted to play a game but didn't know what I wanted to play. Hope it gets an Xbox One X update!

Turned off motion blur the second it let me turn it off, game is 100% better now.

6:02 At 144hz you don't need motion blur, most panel types are slow enough you'll already have plenty of motion blur induced by the hardware.

Picked up this game for a few dollars and played through it recently, it's a pretty fantastic game with so much personality. Reminds me a lot of some of the earlier Tony Hawk games.

I don't understand what took them so long with the PC port? The game sold poorly on the Xbox One and so I thought it would get a PC port a year later like Ryse and Dead Rising 3 but instead it got ported 4 years later? Who thought that was a good idea?

It a basic port. but im definitely buying it, much better then the xbox version.

First things I turned off was motion blur and film grain.

Really the only things bad with the port are the graphics options. Game runs amazingly well too, had more fun with it last night than I thought I would. Give the game an hour or two to let the fun open up.

Great video as usual DF, always love the content even if i don't have any interest in the game. The level of technical analysis in your videos just isn't found anywhere else! As far as the motion blur discussion goes, the reason why the shutter speed feels right at different framerates is most likely because they've probably programmed the motion blur using a shutter angle, not a shutter speed. Shutter angle would scale the effect with the framerate. Shutter angle is a common measurement in high end cinema cameras or film cinema cameras. Consumer cameras generally don't use shutter angle since people are more familiar with shutter speed and shutter angle isn't applicable in photography where only a single frame is captured. Cinema films are usually shot with a shutter angle of 180 degrees - which basically means that the shutter speed is double the framerate. Our eyes have gotten used to seeing it in film - it's probably what they're doing here.

Halo 5 is the very last exclusive Xbox has left... Microsoft shouldn't of dropped developers after their launch flopped i.e when they dropped Sunset Overdrive and Quantum Break which they had already forced TV aspects onto now look at Spiderman and Control.
