KYRE PARK, 32 acres of romantic parkland was an absolute delight. I must admit we drove past the entrance as we were expecting something totally different. However, we parked up and walked to the gate where there was an honesty box for your entrance fee of £3.50 and a larger box with printed maps. The grounds were laid out in the late 18th century, with many ponds with ornamental cascades and bridges. Time had taken its toll, and the grounds had fallen into disrepair, but Jon Sellers and Martin Rickard came to the rescue and began its restoration. They have now past that responsibility to the new owners, who are putting the same love and care into it.
After entering, we filmed the Cut Leaf Beach with the largest recorded girth. Then headed across the iron bridge to the Parted Yew estimated 2000 years old before going into the Green Man folly tunnel leading to a lookout tower. The cupola temple now looks as good as new as does the thatched summer house. The 14th Century Dovecote is just a few paces from the car park, and this isn’t shown on the map, so don’t miss it.
