Copenhagen, the capital city of Denmark, is a fascinating destination that combines rich heritage, innovative design, and a high quality of life.
Copenhagen is renowned for its bike-friendly infrastructure and culture. With dedicated lanes and bike-sharing programs, it's one of the most bike-friendly cities in the world. In fact, there are more bicycles than residents in the city!
Copenhagen consistenly ranks among the world's most sustainable citites, thanks to its commitment to green initiatives. It aims to become the world's first carbon-neutral capital by 2025 and is investing heavily in renewable energy, green spaces, and eco-friendly urban planning.
Copenhagen, with its blend of culture, architecture, and embracing lifestyle, stands out as a unique and captivating city.
The starting point of this walking tour is Nyhavn. Nyhavn, meaning "New Harbor," is a captivating waterfront district in Copenhagen. Lined with colorful 17th and 18th-century buildings, Nyhavn was once a bustling commercial port, now transformed into a lively hub for tourists and locals alike. The picturesque canal, adorned with historic ships and waterfront cafes, creates a postcard-worthy scene that has become an iconic symbol of the city.
As I head straight and then northwest from Nyhavn, I pass by Christiansholm on the other side of the channel. Christiansholm is a historic island retreat that offers a unique glimpse into the city's past.
Continue northwest, I reach the elegant Amalienborg Palace, the official residence of the Danish royal family. You can witness here the Changing of the Guard ceremony at noon.
From here, I walk to the magnificent Frederik's Church, also known as the Marble Church, due to its impressive dome covered in marble. I film it from differect angles so you can enjoy its beauty.
Then I make my way to Kastellet (The Citadel), a well-preserved star-shaped fortress. Built in the 17th century, Kastellet was initially constructed as part of the city's defensive system, designed to protect Copenhagen from potential attacks. It has been repurposed over the years and has served various functions, including as a military barracks and a prison. Today, Kastellet is open to the public and is a popular spot for leisurely walks, as well as a venue for cultural events and exhibitions.
After Kastellet I walk to the iconic Little Mermaid statue. Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's famous fairy tale, this small bronze sculpture sits on a rock by the water's edge, symbolizing the deep connection between art and literature that thrives in the city.
Finally, walking along the waterfront I end my tour at the Gefion Fountain and St. Alban's Church, two famous landmarks located in Copenhagen's Churchill Park.
