Ive been running a toggle switch shift 4L80 in my '80 3/4 ton for nearly a year now. Have a column shifter, so no floor stick option possible like you did hear. I absoluteIy LOVE it. Overdrive with bulletproof ruggedness. No worries like when I had a 700r4. I still have the temp gauge just to make sure shit stays cool on these 116 degree summer dayz. Next build will have an 4L80 also.
nice scott, i want to do exactly the same thing, but with a tighter converter and an button on the dash to lock the converter for the freeway and possibly track
I don't understand why automatic transmissions weren't designed this way from the beginning. I used to think there was some sort of hydraulic pressure magic that determined when an auto transmission would shift. But then I found out that the gear shifts are ultimately caused by electrically activated solenoids! There's no reason these solenoids need to be controlled automatically by a computer. That's just how car manufacturers decided to set it up. They could just as easily have had "up" and "down" buttons on the steering wheel! I understand the reasoning behind using planetary gearsets and a torque converter. In heavy traffic, or intersections on steep hills, using a clutch can be a hassle or challenging for some. But why car makers chose to permanently remove the driver's ability to control shifting is beyond me.
I think it's because most people just want to put it in gear and go...that's not me, I want to be in control at all times when it shifts. There are many times I will shift at 7000 RPMs are higher and it's just not possible with a stock 4L80E.
+Scott Bruton I feel exactly the same about shifting control. To me, gear shifting is no different than braking, steering or throttle. It is another variable that determines how a vehicle will perform. The less control you have over any of these variables, the less you are actually 'driving' the vehicle. But you're probably right: most people care more about convenience than the specifics of a machine's performance. And I suppose the car makers' reasoning was that the customers who cared about performance would go with a stick & clutch anyway, so why bother putting the option of shift control in the automatics at all? From a business perspective, it makes sense, but I'm no business man. I prefer technological variety, not because it will make somebody rich, but because it's awesome. P.S. That's a pretty damn cool truck you've got there.
I have always owned standards, but I just a month ago bought a 2012 Ram 2500, with Hemi, and 6 speed bauto. Switching from 97 7.3 Power SDtroke diesel, I notied the horrible fuel consumtion. I found this video, by searching for a way to put it into 6th Gear when I'm going downhill. When I try to let off the gas and go downhill without using my gas pedal, the truck actually slows down, because it downshifts. I want to use my goddamn higher gears when I'm going downhill so I can roll further and save some fuel. I was wondering how the hell I could manually put it into 6th Gear, as I know that running it downhill in neutral will f*** it up. I'm going to have to look into seeing if this can be done on a modern truck. Thank you, great video..
I found a Shift kit that makes automatic fully manual. Thinking about it. My transmission should be a 4L60. I think manual shifting my LT1 Roadmaster would be fun.
Nice set up , you should make a plug and play wire harness for the 4l80e to sell so guy can turn their onw trans. to a manual , you can make money on ebay, letgo and craiglist I like it .
Scott, I'm starting into a '49 Chev rat rod truck project, I got a LY6 6L motor from a 2007 Chev truck... Plus I have a 4L80e from a '01 2500HD I'd love to do exactly what you've done to it. I'm sick of looking at wiring diagrams and talking to people who suggest getting the ECM reprogrammed with a van wiring harness to control the 4L80 or spending $$$$ on a specific standalone controller... I just want to be able to shift it when I want to shift it. That's it. Don't want toggle switches all over my dash, don't want computers... I want a shifter and a cable. Done. Do you think I could pick your brain a bit how you got this setup?
i would love to do this with my 01 ws6, i already put a shift kit 2800 circle d stall with corvette servo, trying to wake that 4l60e up, but what you did was brilliant i must say. great job on that... how many miles can you put on these converted beasts?
hey your engine sound s bad ass . what kind of glass packs u have on it . and I like the idea . were you maid your trans manual shift ... what do I have to do to turn my 4l60e trans into manual shift . im have shifting isues were mine wont shift out of over drive . and the other gears . but I have reverse . and if I put it in 1st and bring it up to 2nd it shift one time but that's it . thease sensors or driving me crazy . please help .
thanks man please do . did it cost a lot to turn it in to manual shift . im putting mine back to getherto day . with a new wire harness and psm switch because my old wire harness had a smash wire that went to the pcs switch .. no power was getthing to it . but I had 4 or higher oms if that don't fix it im yanking it back out and rebuilding it .
hey what type of exzust or muffers you have on it . and what tpe of shift kit you have in the trans ... if I decide to switch mine over to manual can I keep it auto matick shift . like it is now . .
Yeah...Didn't realize he was passing he was passing until I was half was out. Those rock trucks are not supposed to go over 40 on that road because it's so narrow...Maybe he skipped his part of the instructions. lol he was hauling ass.
How does your converter know when to lock up with this modification? I've seen people put a toggle switch on the wire for lockup, but you said yours doesn't have any wires. Please explain? Also, I'm looking for the internal vacuum modulator kit on transgo but what they are offering is a "stick shift kit" which includes the modulator, AND an entire shift kit. Is all of that really necessary or did you just install modulator?
I like how there's all these videos on youtube or guys with switches and electrics everywhere when you can just buy a shift kit for it and be done. I never understood that.
@@jsb1561 That's pretty nifty, I was actually thinkin from swapping from my manual 700r4 to a manual 4L80e and your response inspired a lot of confidence.
@@jsb1561 that’s the answer I been looking for! Longevity. Swapping in a 350 into a Jeep Comanche w 4l80e and will not have a controller. What shifter did you use and how has it held up? I’m thinking B&M Quicksilver, had one before and loves the simple operation but everything butter smooth, or a Winters/Art Car. Appreciate you making this video
@@ITSNOTMEITISYOU I still drive it every day with no issues, I too used a B&M shifter... mine has the longer arm because of the height I'm dealing with.
What valve body did you use? I'm looking at the tci full manual reverse pattern with a trans brake. Will also allow me to lock up my converter on a toggle switch for cruising
Fix your steering, bro. It looks like you truck is constantly pulling right and you have to hold the wheel left of center and you have a lot of wheel play. My 96 always did that before I replaced the pitman arm and tie rod ends. It drives straight now even with the lift and bigger tires. I can even let the wheel go driving on the straight sections of highway at speed. It makes driving the truck a lot more enjoyable.
How quick is the shift? Is it linkage dependent or is it all electrical? Thinking about building a manual control 4L80-E but using a 'sequential' type shifter.
The shifter is the only thing I don't care for, and it's cable. The reason for using it is because I needed the longer shifter handle and the mega shifter did not have. Good luck with it.
@@jsb1561 I seen a more simple way to do this without switches or anything like that . The guy messed with the wiring in the transmission to make it manual only. Only problem with this its that the line pressure is going to be 100% max all the time. Would you even consider going this route? I just wanna know your thoughts because Im running on a shoestring budget. Search 4l80e manual and the guys channel is beeter garage or something like that
@@jsb1561 Thank you for sharing that information its just what I needed to hear I'm going 4l80e in my 69 chevelle BBC. Did you get the torque converter from trans go too! Big help thanks again
@@jsb1561 please excuse my ignorance. How is the modular valve adjusted? Like an electric valve on a potentiometer? You can adjust the firmness of the shifts?
@@Foundmylsswap it has an sdjustment inside where the vacuum line goes. This is all on the the kit I installed (TrangsGo 4L80E-3). It basically turns it into a 400 turbo with an overdrive and lockup.
Theres a lot of other guys on youtube that are just hard wiring the solenoids to keep it full manual. But.....100% line pressure all the time. Seems like it would dramatically shorten transmission life
You can do that for racing 1/8 or 1/4 but driver it on the street it will last about 100 miles before every seal was blown out.I,m building a 700R4 that will be just as strong, but shift faster and about 100 pounds lighter.
What year 4l80e do you have? What what shifter? Also do you have a part number for the manual valve body? Would really help cause I need to get my truck running, only thing I got right now. Thanks!!
Man please explain.. im so so frustrated the time I have trying comvert and other you tube videos with switches thought I found one that was right by wiring inside tranny but all wants to do is overdrive like you mentioned. Please share and thanks at least I know it can be done.
would you suggest a manual valve body for daily use? I really want more control with my 700r4 but i cant find a auto/manual valve body so i gotta choose one or the other.
+1973primetime I removed everything electronic and added an internal modulator valve in the location of the PCS That's brings it all together. This transmission down right hammers like a fully manual 400 turbo with the convenience of having that 4th gear. I do this on 4L60E and 4L80E transmissions.
Very nice work. I have a 27' Rv with 400trans.. really needs an overdrive. it has a carbed 454 engine, it may weigh about 10000lbs or so. Do u suggest a 4l80e or 4l85e trans with the rvs weight? Also does your trans shown here still have lock up tcc feature? thanks
+koollee A 4l80 is basically a 400 with overdrive 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears are identical, so yes you would benefit by adding an O/D. I no longer have a lock-up but only because I changed torque convertors. The kit I used is a Transgo 4L80E-3 you don't have to make it in Hot Rod mode but RV or tow mode instead. Go to Transgo wedsite and check them out.
I had no problems clearing but, I also have a deep pan with a trans. filter extension. I went back and checked out some of the pictures of the overhaul and believe I too would have had the same problem giving the location of the modular valve if not for the deep pan.
I think it's slick these transmissions can be wired like this.. I am planning on doing this as well. I have seen conversion kits for installing a vacuum pull-off for the line pressure. I wonder if it's necessary?
My dads 92 3/4 ton was hilarious. The steering wheel would go a 1/4 turn each way before it did anything even rolling. It was a great truck and so is this one tho.
Hello I am looking to do this in my 01 Trans am, just curious if you have an email or a place to message you about what and pick your brain about what is all needed to do this?
Quick question boss, How do you get the speedo to work? I have an aftermarket Autometer electric gauge that i use right now that i would still like to keep
The speedo was never disconnected and if I'm not mistaken it's the only cable still going to the tranny. You might want to look into downloading a good speed view program for your phone..LOL it works great unless your racing... Damn lag.
There is no wiring, I installed a modular valve... no shift nods, no pressure sensor. I did install an overdrive sensor at the carburetor, otherwise with this setup it won't shift into 4th.
First off it's a standard B&M shiftier, but since then I have gone to a B&M Mega shiftier. The other question I drive it on a daily basis, and I do pull a trailer with it...lol only when I have to.
Scott Bruton thanks!! Sorry to bug ya with another question but do you run full line psi on it? Or did you put a vaccum modulator kit on it? Thanks for the help because i want to do the same to mine.
I'm running it off the brakes but let me save you a lot of hassle...go to TransGo website and look up part# 4L80E-3, this is what I used and it does everything to switch over. If you have pretty good knowledge of your tranny do it yourself, otherwise take it somewhere. the transmission work takes about 1 to 2 hours to do "Don't rush it" I hope this helps.
@@jsb1561 did the b&m shifter come with the complete kit as well? Also for the wiring harness, did you bypass the entire system so you wouldn’t deal with any wires at all or did you still have to run the og harness that came with the trans?
we could tell somebody how to do that dude I got a truck I want to do that too it's all fun watching you drive the thing but it'd be nice to know how you fix me like that
Hey man I wanted to ask because I want to put a 4l80 in my truck do you still have lock up or not anymore? Also would you daily it and did you daily that truck when it got fixed and stuff?
Yes I have a lock-up, I did change the way it locks up... instead of doing it automatically, I put a manual switch on it so that way I can control when it's on.
@OneTireFire84 it's been a while since I set this up, but the lock-up kit has two wires and I run them to a switch. And yes I drive this truck everywhere.
@@jsb1561would you possibly know where you got the stuff to do it? And that’s good to know because I plan on putting a 4l80 in my truck and I wanted to do this but I didn’t know if it would be annoying shifting it but I’d assume not because I like driving manuals more than a automatics lol. But i thank you for answering my stuff that I asked and I’m glad I came across your videos about this
How do you wire up to allow mechanical 1st gear selection (without a switch)? Also, does your TC lockup work automatically -- if so, how did you wire it up?
@@davidhopper7812 old response but it may be setup to go into lockup when shifted into 4/od. He’d only be going to od when cruising so I could see that as a possibility
I don't remember who made it but it's a 3500 stall full lock up. Make sure when you change convertors add either a deep pan, cooling tank or something to make up for the fluid loss or you will have heat issues... lol that is not good. good luck with it and post how it goes.
yes and all you need is a tps link for it, I had one on mine for about a year until I rebuilt the tranny. I will post the http: link for you when I get a chance.
I have a 2003 4l80e, does this work ? The pcs . Is the pressure control solenoid, correct? What about the speed vss.. I need it intac for the speedometer. Do I leave the shift selonoids in and discontent the wiring. What do . What stall you are using.
First off. the speedometer is all together separate wiring and all other wires... just tuck them away . Go to the TransGo web page and look up, I believe it's the 4L80H-3 kit you want.
Does it shift like a Manuel TH400 but with overdrive. As in 1st all the way down and working your way up with the shifter threw the gears until you get back to neutral
+1973primetime Yes exackly I drill a hole on the drivers side area behind the shifter and run 3/16 brake line to the vacumn booster, I build these all the time.
Are you running efi or carb. Also are you still on ecm. When I built mine I had none of these and had to buy a part that hooked up to the carburetor in order to get fourth gear and run great after that. Other things to check is make sure your linkage is right. Let me know how it comes out.
I am no longer using the part that lets you get 4th gear because I went efi since video and if I can find it I can send it to you... they are around 100 dollars and you very possibly need it.
oh wow i didn't read you're original comment right I dont know why someone would do it i guess to have maybe to have more of a connection with the car or to have more fun idk
Just like you said...Drag Racing. I now can shift at 8,000 RPM's instead of 2,800, plus with the 3,500 stall converter on a 383 Stroker it hits high RPM's quick.
Yes...you can go to the TransGo website... www.transgo.com/products.php?prd=4L80E-HD2&homeinclude=catalog&category_id=98&parent_id=31&product_id=202&countdisplay=2&start=0&addcountview=Yes... Or you can look up the 4L80E-HD2. Good luck with it.
Yes sir... If your not familiar with the internals of a transmission you might want to get some help. I took my time and did mine myself but it was well worth it, it shifts much harder than before plus I don't have near as much heat sink. I hope this helps you and good luck with it.
So, this is ran by no electronics whatsoever? Also, is it possible to bump start it like a manual transmission by pushing it in neutral and then going into gear? Also, does this kit gives you a gear pattern like a standard or its up 1, 2, 3, and 4 and then down from 4, 3, 2, and 1? Final question, does it jerk some while downshifting since you can't rev match?
The only difference in this tranny and stock is it is a manual automatic... no push start, no Rev match, and no electronics. It does have a very hard quick shift for a 4L80e.
@@jsb1561 That's pretty cool, I may have to really consider that, so for the 4l80e, its been a pretty good transmission in my humvee, I'm thinking of putting one in my other vehicle possibly with this manual kit, it much more beats the 4 speed manual in it, won't have to deal with the clutch and unsynchronized gears
+BEETEROLDS Their is no wiring I installed an internal modulator valve in the location of the PCS - or Force Motor. I also have removed both solenoids and blocked them off, the transmission has never worked better.
+Scott Bruton that's awesome! I am in the the process of installing a 4l60e in my Cutlass and I want to go full manual like you did. Rossler sells a small box thst simply plugs into the main harness port and effectively turns the transmission into a full manual unit. I thought you went that route. I can't wait to have the same experience with my transmission!!
+Scott Bruton what did you block off the solenoids with and were do you get an internal modulator valve? have you considered making a video of the mod and posting it?
@@orlanmedina3693 For starts its not running full pressure, I installed a modulator valve in it. I built this transmission in 2014 and still going strong today. I just released a new updated video on it a couple months ago.
