Hello tube of YOU! Welcome back or just welcome for most of you. I recently purchased this 5th Gen 4runner and I am converting it to live in full time. To do that, I have to remove the seats, the 3rd row and back seats. I am going to walk through the process and show you each step. Hope this helps.
Welcome back or Welcome if this is your first time! My name is Smithey and this channel focuses on mainly trucks: maintenance, how to’s, instructional videos, tech videos, and some travel. Stay tuned for more videos and subscribe to follow along in my journey! Enjoy!
About Me: My name is Joey Smithey. I am 31 years young. 11 years down in the military, 9 to go. I have experienced the housing crisis in California and I enjoyed it so much I am doing it again in North Carolina. I have lived in a truck before, a cargo van, a 2008 4Runner, a travel trailer, and now living in my 2016 Toyota 4Runner. I will be converting it periodically and will be posting videos of my progress and the adventures that are soon to follow! I hope you enjoy!

Nice! I can see 4Runners being the new desirable “van life” vehicles.

Thanks! Yeah, 4Runners have been a desirable vehicle for ages. I just love the versatility of them and there off-road ability. They are just the right size to camp in too!

Nice clear video - thank you! The only thing I'd add is that if you remove the rear quarter panel interior trim, you can completely remove [unbolt] the 3rd-row seatbelts if you don't ever plan on reusing those 3rd row seats again.

Appreciate the video. I'm planning on removing my '15 SR5 seats to do some deep cleaning. Considering leaving the third row out and thinking about spraying bedliner instead of carpet.

Thank you for this video. My plan is to replace my carpets. After getting all the seats out, is it just a matter of removing the remaining plastic trim? Any tips for that operation would be appreciated.

So happy i came across this. Bought a limited not knowing it had third row and trying to get a build for one is impossible. I wonder if i can make something involving my third row but delete my second

I see that some 4 runners you can remove the bottom part of the 2nd row seats only? Can you do that with yours?

Man my 2016 doesn't have a 3rd row. When I bought it I never thought I'll need a 3rd row but 6 years later I think I made a mistake 🤦 Can I install a 3rd row? Or do I probably have to remove the 2nd row and install a different 2nd and 3rd rows like yours? Just a question out of curiosity I don't really think I'll do anything (until the new 4runner comes out and I'll buy the one with 3rd row this time 🤦)

I am having a very hard time removing the bolts. Did you use a special type of tool?
@smitheys
@smitheys 2 года назад
I’m sorry to hear that! No, just some standard sockets is all I used. Some of them were a little tough, but no special tools were used. You may need a longer ratchet handle, like a breaker bar. If it’s too hard, the longer handle will give you more leverage. Hope this helps! Good luck.

I'm planning on installing a platform, do you have to support anything underneath vehicle when removing any of those bolts? I had seen one video where they jacked up something underneath that comes off when taking bolts out. Was that for older models maybe? I have a 5th gen too 2013 with 3rd row.
@smitheys
@smitheys Год назад
Hey! Awesome that you’re about to start your build! No, you don’t have to support anything underneath. It’s just a simple unscrew and go.

can you remove the middle seat in the second row just the middle seat tho?
@smitheys
@smitheys Год назад
No. The 4Runner doesn’t have captain chairs. There are only two seats and they’re 60/40 split seats.

Do you have to take the battery out for this?

It’s smart to disconnect the battery when dealing with/disconnecting wires, yes.

Hi! Can you please tell me what specific tools to buy? I'm clueless about this stuff. I have a socket set but it's tiny compared to the one you're using and it's not moving the bolts. Please tell me exactly what to ask for at Home Depot!
@smitheys
@smitheys Месяц назад
Yeah, I get it. I would actually get these tools from harbor freight if you don’t plan on using them very often and you can save some money. The tools I would get: deep well socket set with a 3/8 or 1/2 ratcheting socket wrench. I prefer 3/8 because it’s little smaller but still strong enough for most uses. The 1/2 is bigger/stronger for more heavy duty jobs. I would also get a 3/8 or 1/2 breaker bar if you aren’t very strong. I would also get 3/8 or 1/2 extension set. The extensions are to give you more space to get the bolts out and usually come it like a 4 pack. You would only need one extension between 4 to 6 inch extension so you don’t hit your hands on anything, but your choice. They sell extension single or in sets. Recap: socket set, ratchet socket wrench, breaker bar, & extensions in 3/8 or 1/2 inch. Whatever size you get, get everything in the same size. They have other sizes but for this I’d say stick with one of those sizes. I hope this helps! If you have any other questions just let me know. I’ll help how I can.
@samanthas3909
@samanthas3909 Месяц назад
@@smitheys thank you so much for this! Yeah I am pretty weak and have some injuries. So in that case, would the 1/2 inch ratcheting socket set be better than the 3/8 inch set since I am weak?
@samanthas3909
@samanthas3909 Месяц назад
Also how long should the breaker bar be?
@smitheys
@smitheys Месяц назад
@samanthas3909 no, the 1/2 is bigger and heavier. You can get whatever you want, but I wouldn’t. I use 3/8 on pretty much everything unless it needs a lot of force or for bigger bolts. The breaker bar helps you by giving you more leverage to break bolts free. It’s just a long bar with an adapter on the end for the sockets. You can see which one you like more at the store. Most places have socket wrenches not in the box and just have a bar code on them, especially harbor freight (if you go that route). I’m always broke, so I take that route quite a bit! Haha. Home depot has good tools though, can’t really go wrong. Everywhere you go they have sets with all this in them, so that’s an option too.
@smitheys
@smitheys Месяц назад
And the length of the breaker bar… anything between 6-12 inches. Judgement call there. Longer gives more leverage but too long is kinda pointless, especially for this job. The main bolt that’s hard to get out is the bolt holding down the seatbelt because of, yeah, safety.

Just a bit, but I covered the bare metal to limit the noise. It’s not much though because I kept the carpeting in.

is it possible to change from 2rd sr5 to 3rd sir?
@smitheys
@smitheys Год назад
I honestly don’t know for 100% certainty, but I’m sure you can. They build these 4Runners to be similar, then add options/features after the fact. You’ll just have to find the third row, with all the attachments and hardware.
