Each municipality in Portugal has a special day when an important event in that region is celebrated, whether for political reasons (building a castle, independence, restoration of the municipality, etc.etc.) or religious (celebration of the patron saint of that region or another religious festival). .. whatever... One more holiday, another one to add to national holidays... In Coimbra, the municipal holiday is celebrated on the 4th of July, in honor of Santa Isabel de Aragão, Queen of Portugal and patron saint of the city. In Porto June 24th is the municipal holiday, it's Saint John's Day. "São João" is a popular saint who is celebrated in several cities across the country, but the festivities are much bigger in the city of Porto. Lisbon June 13th, Santo António, Saint Anthony's Day Etc etc etc for all other municipal holiday ;) Once upon a time, here, kings and queens ruled... Afonso Henriques and nicknamed "the Conqueror" was the first King of Portugal from 1139 to 1185 the date of his death. The Implantation of the Portuguese Republic was the result of a revolution organized by the Portuguese Republican Party, which began on October 2nd and won at dawn on October 5th, 1910 (National Holiday), which overthrew the constitutional monarchy and implemented a republican regime in Portugal. But: The coup d'état of May 28, 1926, Revolution of May 28, 1926, or Movement of May 28, 1926, also known by its executors as the National Revolution, was a coup d'état carried out by anti-liberal military and civilians that resulted in the Fall of the First Portuguese Republic and in the establishment of the Second Portuguese Republic, and finally transformed, after the approval of the Constitution of 1933, into Estado Novo, a regime that remained in power in Portugal until the Carnation Revolution of April 25, 1974 . We seem like a peaceful people but from kings and queens to several republics and revolutions what is needed is to maintain serenity because at any time everything can be turned upside down LOL ... rules and laws can change in a blink of an eye ;) or step by step... And Perhaps the best way to also understand another phrase: "Silêncio … que se vai Cantar o Fado!" "Silence...Fado is going to be sung!" The word Fado derives from the Latin “fatum”, which means destiny, one of the most repeated words over the years in poems sung in the form of Fado. Those who weren't born in this country, especially more than half a century ago, instead of Fado, maybe it's better to listen to Alan Cumming und die Broadway Besetzung von 1998 singen "Willkommen" aus dem Musical "Cabaret". "between the lines"... Fado: about destiny of "the now and the again", repetitions of storms, stress and what will be again. We seem very calm and affable, a type of calm that comes from centuries of training, only to increase our resistance against any kind of storm (visible and invisible), that will come again, as usual...

That was amazing to watch. We couldn’t have fireworks for Canada Day in many parts of the country, including mine, due to the fire restrictions. Thank you so much for filming that as well as the huge fair, I’ve never seen that many people at a fair. The Beatles Tribute Band members were incredible. Wishing you a belated Happy 4th of July!
Great video! It's nice you're sharing places and events with everyone. I'm sure a lot of people are interested in this in case they decide to make the move themselves. It was nice seeing the big xpat meet and greet happenings for those that live there.

I was so jealous of you alll it seemed a magical atmosphere , just what you want on a summers night. Thank you I watch your channel to see the duckling become a swan (the house) and the whitewash tip was something I’ve never heard of before but the house looked amazing afterwards, however to see the celebrations and local life was a brilliant change to most home renovation channels. 😊

Much appreciation for sharing the 07/04 fireworks show! I'm in SE US; here, it is all about the *boom*, which I've never loved. The Portuguese display of fireworks fountains was remarkable!!!! With the reflection in the water ... *chef's kiss.

I am happy that you did enjoy the feast of St. Elizabeth's Day on the 4th of July “Dia de Santa Isabel” limited to Coimbra in Portugal! Also I could not find which "Elisabeth" they were celebrating! However, it is not important! The county is known for its university! The variety of shows and fun were for all ages especially the fireworks! While studying in Spain, I did not have the possibility visiting Portugal, specially Porto! But again, I have great memories of my sojourn oversea! Enough of my thoughts, your experience is more interesting. I suspect that you came home somewhat tired but delighted of the adventure or the adventure still continue until next time! It is pleasant to know that you enjoyed yourself and hopefully it will continue! Live, love, and eat that is my moto! And drink, it goes without saying! Thanks for the lovely video. I was going to ask if many American emigrants were at the festival, but it looks like they were in Porto. By the way, do you see many Portuguese Camino pilgrims where you live?
No in my town specifically but the camino goes right through Coimbra, its fun to find the little scallop symbols. Theres also another that goes to Fatima, so you usually see pilgrims amongst the tourists.
A pick pocket’s smorgasbord! They are everywhere in Europe but especially where large groups of people congregate. Much the same goes on in Italy in the summertime. Looks like fun. 😊😊😊😊😮😊😊😊😊
