4WD Tyre Review - Kumho AT51's on the Pajero and Defender

I often get asked what tyres I run on my four-wheel drive, so I thought it was about time I shared with you what I have and what I think.
I have the Kumho Road Venture AT51’s on the Pajero and this is my second set of these All Terrain tyres. So straight up, for me to have bought them a second time, there must be something good about them.
And based on my recommendation, we put the AT51’s on my Sons Landrover Defender. So this review takes into account what both of us think of these tyres, both on-road and off-road.
I’m pretty brand loyal when it comes to most things, so if I find something I like, I generally stick with it, and that’s been the case with these tyres.
The AT51’s are an all terrain tyre and Khumo recommend them for 30% off-road use and 70% on road.
But realistically, we typically spend most of our time on the black top, so for the general four wheel driver, it’s important to select a tyre that works well for our daily drive. And these AT51’s have performed very well.
Having driven on these tyres for over two years now, I’ve found them to be a very capable and comfortable tyre. They’re nice and quiet when driving down the highway and they grip the tarmac well in both the dry and the wet. When the tread starts to get low, they do become a little slippy in the wet, but not nearly as much as some other brands I’ve had in the past.
Even though most of us spend very little of our time off-road, we do tend to want a tyre that performs well on the dirt. And for me, these tyres have done the job.
I took them off road for the first time about three days after they were fitted. I was at an extreme winch challenge and it was very wet. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but they performed exceptionally well on the slippery red clay surface.
For general off-roading, they handle very well on both hard and soft surfaces. They turn in well in soft sand as well as on hard packed dirt. I do a lot of dirt road driving, and I’m extremely happy with how they perform. The grip on dirt roads is exceptionally good and the car always feels safe and predictable, even at higher speeds.
I don’t often find myself doing hard-core four wheel driving, but the small number of times I’ve needed to do something a bit more difficult, I’ve found the Kumho AT51’s to be very good over a variety of surfaces.
One thing I have been particularly impressed with is the durability of the tyres. I haven’t had any punctures or tyre damage, despite going over some pretty rough, sharp rocky surfaces. The side wall construction seems to be very solid and the tread construction has remained in-tact with very little chipping or cutting noticeable.
The zig-zag groove and pattern of the AT51 is typical of many All Terrain tyres and Kumho claim that the Dual pitch in the centre block and the zig-zag groove improves off-road traction.
In terms of wear, I got about 80,000 km’s out of my first set of AT51’s.
So that’s my review and overview of the Kumho AT51 tyres. I’m exceptionally happy with them and they haven’t let me down yet.
Even if you never take your 4WD off-road, these tyres would be a good choice as I find them great for normal city driving. But if you are going to take them off-road, I’m sure, like me, you’ll find them more than capable. If you’re out every weekend doing serious off roading, maybe these aren’t for you, but when it’s time for me to replace these ones, I’ll be treating the Pajero to another set of the Kumho AT51’s.

Interestingly, I too have a Pajero with AT51's, I have found in my experience that they've performed very well and as you've described. Recently had a trip to the snow where they worked a treat. No issues with traction on icy wet and snowy roads. Quiet and grippy on road, and have been given a work out on the dirt also. Am a fan.

I've had these on my Toyota Tundra. I run LT tires at 65 psi. I have 2000 lb payload in the bed at all times and yes airbags on the rear springs to keep level. I also tow a Travel trailer at 25 ft and 7 k lbs on road trips, a dump trailer at 10 k lbs and equipment trailer at 10k lbs on local short trips. I have done snow in local mountains past 2 winters. I have had no flats and no issues. Traction has been solid. I am buying a second set as the 30 thousand miles on these is getting to be too much for snow and heavy rain, better safe than sorry. I can say for my well loaded Tundra these have performed very well. I run e rated and not p rated. These are 80 psi max in LT.

I just purchased my second set of these tires for my Ford F250, I live in North Western Wyoming and require the snowflake ❄ for ice and winter driving conditions as well as plenty of dirt and rock 2 tracks! Highly recommended 10 ply truck tires!

Looking up reviews for these tires. It's on sale for 105usd which is cheap for a fairly branded at tires. Just picked some offroad wheels. Definitely getting these for my 01 forester. Thanks for your review.

Our pleasure. We have had many different brands and types of tyres on our Pajero over the last 15 years and I can honestly say that these AT51’s are the best we’ve had in terms of grip, performance, off road capability (for what we do) and value for money.

Just put these on my 2010 Dakota 4 door 4x4 and they do very well. Live in southern Ohio and spend alot of time on the highway for work and also on the farm. Do alot of hunting and fishing and these tires perform very well in the mud and rain. Last week was back on the back side of our farm and it was pretty muddy but I had zero problems with these in 4 high. Ate up all the mud I went through. Very impressed, my dad is putting a set on his 2020 f150 king ranch this Friday

Mel Powell Definitely a great tire! Ive had them on my 94 toyota pickup 4wd for just over a year now. 31x10.50R15. Had them in gummy mud, sand, sharp rocks, pretty much everything you’d drive over off road and they have been amazing. I was very surprised with wet traction and it feels like they are glued to the road and really resist hydroplaning. Road noise is there just like any other aggressive all terrain but I don’t notice it u less I try to hear it. My size has the 3 peak mountain snow flake as well but I have studded snow tires I put on in the winter so I can’t say much about snow and ice performance. Ive put about 10,000 km on them and haven’t noticed much difference in tread depth. When I need to buy tires again Im definitely getting these

Glad to see the pajero running strong after so many years with ya'll. What are your thoughts on BF Goodrich? Running KO2s on my Ranger Raptor. And how long do you plan on keeping your pajero?
@OnTheDirt
@OnTheDirt 4 года назад
Yep, the Pajero is sitting on 340,000 kms and still going strong. My friend has just put the BF Goodrich tyres on his car and they were a lot more expensive than the Kumho's. From all of the reports we've seen, the BF Goodrich are also a good choice, but come at a cost. As far as how long we plan on keeping the Pajero... let's just say I'm keen to see it hit 500,000kms! I could buy something new, but the Paj has served us so well and as a trade it's worth very little, so we'll just keep it.

@OnTheDirt
@OnTheDirt 2 года назад
Apart from regular servicing, it hasn't had any major overhaul. It is starting to show its age with almost 400k on the clock. I suspect it does need an injector clean and also needs to have the intake system cleaned due to the EGR build up. We were going to replace it recently, but have decided to keep it until we reach half a million km's.

@OnTheDirt 4 года назад
Kim Capone - there are plenty of reviews of the AT51. What is your basis for stating they are bad? Do you have these tyres on your car? Have you ever used them or tested them? We’d love to hear from genuine users who have had experience on the AT51’s, but your claims that nobody has them or wants them is simply incorrect.
