Ranger guy carries it is my guess. Many of the dangerous animals in Australia don't lend themselves to being defended against with a gun, due to small size and close distances of encounter. Crocs perhaps, but weird to have a long scope on a croc defense weapon. A ranger might carry a gun in order to shoot animals that are considered pests due to being introduced or just overpopulated. Also going far from civilization, not the worst idea to have a hunting rifle. A kangaroo is a lot more food than a fish.
