This video is all win. Even though the rear axle is about to fall out of this Willys FC-150 chassis, the Jeep CJ-5 transmission is spitting needles out of its bearings, and I still haven't gotten around to brakes, its a total success!
Someone, 30 years from now, is going to go through this amazing yard of the randomest vehicles imaginable, find this creation, find the covering in the bed, and wonder what in the world it was used for. Keep up the great work!
The last guy that worked on this transmission didn't know what he was doing, and that was me. That one had me rolling. I love your humor and creativity, but most of all your patience.
This contraption reminds me of the early days of the automobile industry, where the chauffeur was open to the elements in an entirely open cab, whereas the passengers enjoyed the comfort and the luxury of the high-end interior 😃
..."so now I might be able to have someone else come along and enjoy the Danger".This guy is fabulous! He tinkers away with the scrabhorde... and putting pieces together...and cutting on concrete on his knees with a grinder.... and then moves over to the LASER CNC Cutter to make some Fancy brackets 😂😂😂 This show has everything ! 😁
He sure does have some great quotes. This was my favorite of the video: "Because I know for a fact the person who last worked on this transmission had no idea what they were doing. Aaand that's because it was me..."
Your setup for cooling reminds me on my poor old Dads Toyota Space Cruiser. You flipped the drivers seat back to access the cooling for the engine. What a setup lol! Love your channel - you certainly earned my subscription. I love your "no BS" approach.
Maybe a Lincoln locker in the rear and heck while your back there weld the U bolts to the lower plate. Also a shifter knob may save your arm. Pretty fun looking rig.
I finally had to subscribe to your adventures! Love your dry and sardonic sense of humor as you encounter each new obstacle...so refreshing to see your work, as opposed to the other folks that attempt to "entertain" viewers with added horseplay and goofiness. If they only knew how annoying that is. You, sir, are a WINNER!
@@LowBuckGarage and might consider getting WAGON WHEELS to complete the look, needs footboards and an upright in front to complete the look. IMHO the cover should be splayed conduit like wagons of old. being wider on top than the bottom
25:33 Best quote of the video: "Because I know for a fact the person who last worked on this transmission had no idea what they were doing. Aaand that's because it was me."
Damn, I've always known XJ's to have cooling problems but I've never actually looked at a radiator for one. With that little of surface area no wonder. It's like half the size of my ZJ. thats nuts.
It is undersized and runs dual fans. One mechanical and the other electrical. The electric side has really odd wiring with this little hidden orange diode in it. If it blows, and it does, the electric goes down and you overheat. I've had to fix someone's butchery of a "repair" job on that one once.
*- What a neat rig. And so many tricks we learned & things left that could be fixed to show us, too!* *- Will it ever have an overhang shade for the front?*
I've already started using it as a mobile workbench here and there, so it'll probably spend most of the time running around the yard helping with other projects.
Hi mate, you must have a lot of time on your hands. I've only just discovered your shows and really love them. Thanks for your time, I'm sure that your brain will never be bored, you seem to have a nack of making something out of not much. Keep it up, it's very entertaining. You have plenty of past shows for me to catch up on, thanks again.I plan on doing a trip to your country so hopefully I'll be able to witness some of your, what ever this is you do in person. Bye for now.
It's so much more interesting when I understand as you work. Other guys geek out with scans , cad etc... that I don't understand and confusing but they tell me everything about them that I didn't ask or care. So thanks for everyday info
YAY awesome build my friend, been along throughout and glad to see it ready to ride. Maybe a 'Lincoln locker" or two? now if you had made the bed dump......
I happened to pick up a couple of rusty used limited slips that may or may not fit. I'm going to give that a shot, but probably will have to go with the hot metal glue solution when that goes wrong.
I always thought of trying a limited slip in the front of mine. My last one had one in the rear (factory option) and it made a huge difference. I would hesitate to lock the front if you want to steer
Here is a suggestion for you to think about. Add two more upright hoops, one at each corner of the front frame rail so you can have a SHADE CLOTH over your head, you could even extend it forward so as for it to act like sun-visor/rain shade. Just thinking out of the box, like you do.
Nice progress on your covered wagon. It is looking good. You should add a cooler behind the passenger seat for some cold drinks. You didn't have a description of the transmission oil , but I would have to say that it looked like melted chocolate,. I have never seen transmission oil like that before, and I have been working on stuff for forty years. That would be a good vehicle to take to a swap meet or something for carrying people and cargo , but you should probably replace the u bolts on the leaf springs first . Thank you for the video. Tim from Wisconsin.
Thanks! A cooler is a good idea, I'll work on that. With the oil, I think it had powdered rust mixed in thickening it up. I know that transmission was sitting outside in the rain since around '95. I checked the oil, it looked like oil at the level plug, so I just ran it. Probably grinding rust through the gears the whole time...
@@LowBuckGarage yeah it is usually the best thing to just change the oil on that old stuff right away , especially if it was stored outside.cause there's no telling for sure what may have gotten mixed in with it , especially water . It is a lot easier and cheaper to change oil rather than have to rebuild something.
Low Buck, I love watching you channel. I must say about this one though, I have seen enough RU-vid vids involving vehicles without doors to know that if you do not have seatbelts installed, there is a really good chance you are going to be on your butt on the road with the vehicle possibly running you over. You do lots of safety stuff too. Maybe seatbelts are just hidden under the seats?
What a cool rig! Love the outa the box inovations especially the door hinge bracket (im gonna remember that.) I think the only thing I would do.. and Lord knows im no safety nazi is throw some type of mesh down on the cockpit deck to keep whats left of my lower limbs intact. At one point I had a 98 Ford Ranger cab, S10 bed, powered by a Mercedes 5 cyl diesel, sitting on a 1952 Ford F1 truck frame that kinda looked like a baby duece I used PVC for the troop carrier bow supports total catastrophe.
Thanks! Yeah, I'll need to do something about a "floor". I almost lost my shoe into the front tire on a couple of right turns. I'm thinking expanded metal, because its really handy to be able to look straight down to see exactly where the front tires are going.
@@LowBuckGarage add a suicide knob to wheel for steering adjustments use slatted pvc boards to protect your feet and add steps to climb on rig.....of course some old time lanterns lit with LEDS for night time operation
I think you might like a thing that I saw Wes from Watch Wes Work use colled "form a funnel". Neet little thing that can save some time on cleaning oil 😂
I know you have done more work to this project since you uploaded this particular video, on the rusted u-bolts, maybe you can wire brush the exposed threads enough to run new nuts on the bottom, maybe knock the old nuts off and put 1" long pipe spacers in their place.
@@LowBuckGarage yeah, heres some pics seems closest to iot is a cargo wagon or a chuck wagon, add small boxes or half wooden kegs to dress up the sides and some have wooden bins on sides for aux storage of tools
Looking good question. Did the radiator come off eBay or ? Do you know what the double seat you installed came out of ? Same color as my yj interior and I need a rear seat for it . Looks like it would work?
Yes, the radiator was from ebay. The seat is actually designed for a Wrangler, I think its made by Bestop. I found it used for cheap, but I think they still make them.
Cool project, but in my world, brakes are not an option on anything that moves. The rust holding it together is fine. Just don't go under it. I have dirt holding things together. People wonder why I don't wash stuff.
