4x4 PTO Driven Timber Trailer BUILD Ep.3 - Chain Tensioner etc.

4x4 PTO driven timber trailer tandem axle build continues. Welding on the bearing block bolts on the S355 chain housing sidewalls and bearing block flanges. Cutting out chain tensioner parts on the homemade CNC plasma table. Using 6mm S355 steel for the tensioner box parts. Sprockets and bearings are off-the-shelf parts I ordered from a farmer store. This 100mm chain tensioner sprocket with the chain tensioner box mount will be located inside the main chain housing and it'll move up-down and tension the chain via bolt attached to the lid I'm yet to make. To be continued. Stay tuned!
Trailer specs:
28x11-14" tires & 14" rims
1450mm/57" wide; length and height - unknown
tandem axles with homemade chain housings
BMW E39 530D differential with 2.81 gearing (identical to the UTV diffs)
hydraulic crane with a boom & grapple for easier log loading & handling
independent hydraulic power pack
radio controlled hydraulic winch on the boom
load capacity - 1-1,5 metric tonne
Stay tuned for the next episode & thanks for watching!

You might want to look into grease nipple extensions. That way it wont become one of those,"i'l do it next time i use it.. forgets whole thing exists and replaces bearing for it" things. Also you really want to design ways to have "emergency" access to those axle locking nuts for the future. Trying to drill them out so you can get bearing and axle out will be "interesting" experience for the poor bastard who has to do it.. Ether make it last so its only your children who has to do it when you are dead(and prepare some yellow rain on top of your grave), or always think ease of maintenance and if all possible, "what if this thing jams/rusts shut" moments.

Quick Tip: put a towel or rag inside of your spare nuts and bolt bucket/box. Then put all the miscellanious nuts and bots in. When when you need to search for something, lift the towel/rag out of the bucket/box with everything inside it and lay it out on the floor. Then you can spread all nuts and bolts out on the towel/rag to search for what you need. The awesome part, after your done sifting through all the nuts and bolts, simply fold the corners of the toewl/rag together and you can lift everything up and put it all back into the bucket/box in one easy motion. 👍😁

I live in Vietnam and PTO trailers are a common site towed behind small farm tractors. For the most part the trailers are the rear ends of trucks and of course tipper trucks have the advantage of the tipping body. The trailers come with the trucks gearbox and the PTO is connected to this. Steep banks up the Highlands are no bother for these set up's and they carry huge loads of produce. All that needs to be done is weld an frame towing bracket where the engine used to be, make up the PTO shaft and braking system. I did see one double axle but not sure if it was 4x4 drive. Lots of WWII Willies jeeps towed powered trailers. Thanks for posting I love engineering videos.

Doing a really good job. The only thing I'm concerned with and have had cases of the bolts snapping off, is the welding of the grade bolt heads. It makes them brittle. I've had them break off once before and learned never to fully weld the heads. Grade 5 can handle welding the heads better. I would highly recommend making a retain to fit over the bolt heads to hold them from turning and falling out then weld the retainer to the plate. I know it's a lot of work to do over, but worth the time.

Great job actually building stuff. Location tabs are very useful, since you have a CNC Plasma. A rectangular hole in one piece & a tab in the other. The bearing flanges - I use 1/2" bolts to locate & center on 1/2" holes. Then weld 3/8" bolts in the rest of holes. I know you put the bearing blocks for the wheel axles on the inside for less holes in oil bath case. But that makes it really difficult to service those bearings. You can still turn the top drive bearing flange to the outside of case.

Hi Donn, as a mechanical engineer I love your work and creativity. Maybe it was not clear to me but it looked like the bearing in the chain tensioner sprocket is not mechanical locked. Only a press fitting. In time the sprocket could slide against the bracket. If so, and if there is enough space, you can solve it by adding 3 or 4 threaded holes on the edge of the ball bearing pocket. In such a position that a round headed screw (f.i.) will lock the ball bearing.
